Shelly Deckert Dick is the chief judge for the United States District Court for the Middle District of Louisiana. She joined the court in 2013 after a nomination from President Barack Obama. Dick became chief judge in 2018.
At the time of nomination, Dick was a partner in the law firm Forrester, Dick & Clark in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.[1][2][3]
Early life and education
Dick attended the University of Texas, graduating cum laude with a B.S. in 1981. She went on to earn her J.D. in 1988 from the Louisiana State University Paul M. Hebert Law Center.[4]

On April 25, 2012, President Barack Obama nominated Shelly Deckert Dick to the United States District Court for the Middle District of Louisiana to fill the vacancy left by Ralph Tyson.[1] Obama commented on the two nominations:

Dick was rated Substantial Majority Qualified, Minority Not Qualified by the American Bar Association. Dick's nomination was returned to the president on January 3, 2013. Dick was nominated again by President Barack Obama on January 4, 2013 to the United States District Court for the Middle District of Louisiana. Obama commented on this and the other nominations:

Several have been awaiting a vote for more than six months, even though they all enjoy bipartisan support.[2][5] | ” |
On May 9, 2013, the United States Senate confirmed Shelly Deckert Dick to an Article III post for the United States District Court for the Middle District of Louisiana with a voice vote.[6][7] She became chief judge of the court in 2018.[3]
