Robert G. Coats was a judge for the Alaska Court of Appeals. He was appointed on July 30, 1980 by Governor Jay Hammond, and was retained by the electorate three times thereafter.[1] He retired on December 31, 2012.[2] Coats served as the court's chief judge from 2010 to 2012.

Education

Judge Coats attended the University of Washington for his B.A. in 1965 and Harvard University for his L.L.B. in 1968.[3][4]

Career

Judicial Council recommendation

The Alaska Judicial Council is the nominating body for judges in Alaska. It performs a survey of judges up for retention election and gives a recommendation as to whether or not the judge should be retained. Judge Coats was recommended for retention in 1984, 1992, 2000 and 2008.[5][6]
