Biography
Koplen received his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville in 1975 and his J.D. from the Hofstra University Law School in 1981. Koplen's professional experience includes maintaining his own law practice, The Law Offices of Michael A. Koplen in New City, New York, specializing in criminal, family, bankruptcy, DWI, employment discrimination, real estate, and business law.[2]
Elections
2017
New York held general elections for local judicial offices on November 7, 2017. A primary election was held on September 12, 2017. The filing deadline for candidates who wished to run in this election was July 13, 2017.[3] As the only Republican in the race, Koplen did not run in the primary election.
Keith Cornell (D) defeated Michael Koplen (R) and Alden Wolfe (Working Families) in the Rockland County Surrogate's Court general election.[4]

Selection method

Judges of the New York Surrogates' Courts are each elected in partisan contested elections. Outside of New York City, they serve 10-year terms. In New York City, they serve 14-year terms. To serve on this court, a judge must be a state and county resident, at least 18 years old and practice in the state for 10 years. This court has a mandatory retirement age of 70 years old.[5]
