M. John Sherman was a multi-bench judge for the county, family and surrogate's courts in Tompkins County, New York. He was first elected to a term that began in 1994. He was re-elected in 2004 and retired in 2013.
Sherman also served as an acting justice for the Tompkins County Supreme Court and the Tioga County Supreme Court in the 6th Judicial District.[1]
Education
Sherman received his B.A. degree from Harvard University in 1971 and his J.D. degree from the Syracuse University School of Law in 1975.[1]
Career
Sherman began his career in 1976 as a chief assistant district attorney of Herkimer County. In 1978, he became an assistant district attorney of Tompkins County. He then worked as an Ithaca City prosecutor from 1980 to 1982. He was an acting judge of the Ithaca City Court from 1984 through 1989 and then served as a judge of that court through 1993. In 1994, he took office on the Tompkins County Court, where he remained until 2013.[1]
