Heading into the election, Ballotpedia rated this race as safely Republican. Incumbent Matt Salmon (R) did not seek re-election in 2016. Andy Biggs (R) defeated Talia Fuentes (D) and Nolan Daniels (L write-in) in the general election on November 8, 2016. Fuentes defeated Kinsey Remaklus in the Democratic primary, while Biggs defeated Justin Olson, Don Stapley, and Christine Jones to win the Republican nomination. Campaign themes

2016

The following issues were listed on Remaklus' campaign website. For a full list of campaign themes, click here.

  • Campaign Finance Reform: I believe, along with many others, that the Citizens United Supreme Court ruling has been one of the most detrimental decisions in decades.
  • Climate Change: While there are many important issues facing our country, there is no issue more important to the future of our planet than the dangers posed by Climate Change. If elected I will support investments in renewable energy technologies and work to keep fossil fuels in the ground. While we cannot be completely independent from fossil fuels tomorrow, the future of our society depends on moving towards a more sustainable future as quickly as possible.
  • Investigating Allegations of Election Fraud: All across the country there have been numerous allegations of election fraud, from Arizona, to New York, and most egregiously in Illinois. Our two-party political system is a false dichotomy, with both sides representing the same interests: their own, and those of their wealthy donors. The reality behind these allegations might be even more dire.
  • Increasing Governmental and Legislative Transparency: I find it bizarre that we live in a society where it is easier to read about what a presidential candidate ate at a campaign stop or wore to a function than the legislation he has supported. Our current political elite pander to the electorate with empty platitudes about issues and legislation that they may or may not support.
  • Reducing Voter Suppression and Voter Disenfranchisement: Our country has one of the lowest rates of voter engagement in the Western World. We deify our democracy one minute, and enact legislation to suppress voters the next, under the guise of preventing a non-existent problem. This is madness.
