New York Town and Village Courts
The New York Town and Village Courts are courts in New York that have jurisdiction over cases including, misdemeanors, lesser offenses, and civil lawsuits under $15,000. These courts are also collectively known as Justice Courts.
There are approximately 1,300 Town and Village Courts in New York’s town and villages. The 2,200 Town and Village judges handle around 2 million cases a year.[1] Town and village justices serve four-year terms that begin on January 1 following their election. Most justices are not attorneys. Non-attorneys are required to complete a certification course and complete ongoing judicial education.[2][3]
