Head of Delaware Republican Party resigns
May 30, 2013
DOVER, Delaware: Delaware Republican Party Chairman John Sigler resigned in a letter to party officials on May 29, 2013, citing unspecified personal concerns and saying he needed to devote more time to his business.[1][2]
In a hand-delivered letter to the Delaware Republican Party's executive committee on May 29th, Sigler said he was resigning effective immediately because of "newly emergent and totally unexpected circumstances" beyond his control.[3] Sigler said in the letter that because of the nature and origin of the circumstances, he could not elaborate or comment further, except to say that the circumstances are not related to politics.[3] After Sigler announced his resignation at the meeting, he followed up with an email to Party leaders.[4]
“It is with deep regret and a profound disappointment that I must inform you that, due to newly emergent and totally unexpected circumstances that are completely beyond my control, I am unable to continue to serve you as the Chairman of the Republican State Committee of Delaware,” Sigler said in his letter of resignation.[2]
Sigler was first elected Chairman of the Republican Party in 2011, replacing Tom Ross.[4] He was re-elected without opposition at the state's Republican Party’s Wilmington convention in April.[4][5] Sigler, who currently works as an attorney representing a healthcare services firm in Dover, is a former U.S. Naval combat submariner and Dover police captain, and served as president of the National Rifle Association from 2007 to 2009.[4]
State vice-chairman Nelly Gordon will become acting chairman.[6] Within 60 days the Republican Party must hold a special convention where it will elect a new Chairperson.[6] According to Party leaders preparations for that are already underway.[6]
