Text on Ballotpedia is licensed under the GNU Free Documentation License.
The text of Ballotpedia is copyrighted by Ballotpedia's editors and contributors. It is licensed to others under the GFDL License.
What the GFDL licensing system means is that Ballotpedia's contributors grant free access to the text they have written, and this text can be copied, modified, and redistributed, if and only if:
- The copied version is made available on the same terms to others. This means that if you copy text from Ballotpedia elsewhere, you must allow others to copy that content from your website on the same terms under which you copied the content from Ballotpedia.
- You acknowledge the authors of the Ballotpedia article. This is known as the "GFDL attribution requirement." In most cases, a live link from your website back to the article on Ballotpedia from which you are copying content satisfies the GFDL attribution requirement.
Ballotpedia contributors
- If you contribute text directly to Ballotpedia, you are licensing it to the public under the GFDL license (with no invariant sections, front-cover texts, or back-cover texts).
- Contributions to Ballotpedia other than text may be licensed under a variety of different licenses; see Ballotpedia's guidelines for images.
- If you want to contribute text to Ballotpedia that you have found elsewhere or that you have co-authored with others, you can only do so if it is available under terms that are compatible with the GNU Free Documentation License.
You retain copyright to any text you contribute to Ballotpedia.
You can republish and relicense materials you place on Ballotpedia in any way you like. However, you can never retract or alter the license for copies of materials that you place here; these copies will remain so licensed until they enter the public domain when your copyright expires (currently some decades after an author's death).

- Some images may be uploaded to and used on Ballotpedia that are not available for re-use elsewhere.
- If you upload an image to Ballotpedia, you must establish that the image is available in the public domain or, if the photo is not available in the public domain, you must provide information about the source of the image, its copyright status, and why you believe it is acceptable to use it on Ballotpedia.
