501(c)(17) is an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) tax exemption status that applies to supplemental unemployment benefits trusts. These organizations provide payments to individuals who are permanently or temporarily laid off from their employment. The trust may also offer benefits for accident or illness, but these options must be secondary to unemployment benefits. Funds from the trust may not be used for any purpose other than the payment of benefits.[1]

The 501(c)(17) trust must be instituted and supported by an employer or a group of employees. These entities are prohibited from practicing discrimination in the formulation of payments and must develop a benefit schedule based on "objective standards."[2]
