Yichen is an outspoken and rebellious student at Republic City University. He is the most outspoken opponent of Varrick on campus, believing that the businessman has no right interfering with the university.[1]
History[]
Yichen grew up in an exceedingly wealthy family. His family profited off the order the Earth Empire provided, and saw this as a prime example of the rich exploiting the poor. He came to believe in working toward equality for everyone in Republic City, despite his immense privilege. Yichen claimed that working toward this was his burden to bear. He savored the chance to prove himself worthy, most of all to himself.[1]
Yichen and a wider group of students came to become deeply worried about Varrick's position at the university, and the Healing the City Committee that he helped establish. They believed that any charity effort organized by Varrick must be corrupt.[2] Yichen came to view Varrick and his copious donations as yet another example of the rich exploiting things for power. He believes all donations and charitable efforts from Varrick must be rejected by the university and its student organizations. From Yichen's point of view, Varrick would co-opt the university to foster corporate greed if left to his devices.
Yichen sent several anonymous, threatening letters to Varrick and the Healing the City Committee. When these were largely ignored, Yichen came to believe it was time to start escalating.[1]
Personality[]
Yichen longs to be one of the "salt of the earth" people with dirt under their nails, in spite of his privilege. He is an idealist at heart, and his passions run deep.[1]
