"I hope you that you're able to save your friends. But the truth is, for the Avatar, friends can be... a liability. The Avatar has to make the impossible choices, placing the world's needs ahead of your needs. On that, Kyoshi and I agree. Trust me, it'll save you and the ones you love a lot of pain." |
— Roku to Aang.[1] |
Roku was the Fire Nation Avatar immediately succeeding Avatar Kyoshi of the Earth Kingdom and preceding Avatar Aang of the Southern Air Temple.
History[]
At one point, Avatar Roku once faced Koh and stole something from him, a totem that represented an ancient spirit, the Mother of Faces.[1]
Appearances in Avatar Aang's life[]
Avatar Aang visited Roku's temple in Crescent Island and was able to meet him through meditation. Aang asked him for help on how to stop Koh in order to save his friends, but Roku could not help him regarding the predatory spirit. Aang told Roku that he did not have a choice and if he doesn't do something, he'll lose them forever. When Aang mentioned that Roku defeated Koh once, Roku however stated that he only took something from Koh. Recalling Koh's words, Aang asked Roku what he had taken from Koh and Roku revealed a totem that belonged to the Mother of Faces, who was also Koh's mother. He explained that Koh had longed for something most people have: family. Aang knew that he had to exchange the statue in order to save his friends. Roku then gave Aang one more advice that relying on his friends may be a liability and that being the Avatar means that he has to make impossible choices for the sake of the world ahead his own, even that will save Aang and his friends from the pain.[1]
