The Exit 8 live-action movie adaptation announced
On December 27, Toei announced that a movie adaptation of hit Japanese indie game The Exit 8 will be coming out sometime in 2025.
Made by Japanese solo developer Kotake Create, The Exit 8 is a walking simulator set in the looping underground passageways of a subway station. Players must successfully spot anomalies in their surroundings in order to reach the titular Exit 8. First released on Steam in November 2023, the game became a huge surprise hit. It has since been ported to the Nintendo Switch and PS4/PS5. The game also received a follow-up, Platform 8.
Toho has released a teaser trailer for The Exit 8 movie, showing us the real-life recreation of the game’s passageways. The Exit 8’s iconic middle-aged salaryman, who has become somewhat of a symbol of the game (as well as a thirst-trap, for some people), also appears in the trailer.
The game’s developer shared his delight at the announcement. “When I released the game in November 2023, I had no idea that about one year later it would be made into a film. I am filled with surprise and gratitude.” Kotake Create commented. “When I first heard about it, I wondered how a game with no story could be made into a film, however I think it has turned out to be an interesting movie that maintains the worldview and atmosphere of The Exit 8.” The developer also mentions visiting the set and how cool it was to see the game recreated in real life. “I hope you are all looking forward to it! I am really looking forward to the movie’s release too!”
The Exit 8 movie is scheduled to be released in Japan in 2025. International screening and release information is TBC.
