Pork-focused Slab BBQ is opening a second location early next year in the Oak Hill Plaza Shopping Center, reported Community Impact. The new spot will take over the space that once housed Verona Ristorante Italiano.
Slab (which stands for slow, low, and bangin') is marked by its fusion of barbecue styles from the Deep South and Texas, and its old school hip-hop theme that’s carried through in the decor, menu descriptions, and the play list.
The menu at the original Slab’s North Austin location features St. Louis-style pork ribs, sliders, barbecue nachos, country hash, and its signature barbecue meat sandwiches with pulled pork, sausage, brisket, or chicken. (The descriptions include Notorious P.I.G., the Texas O.G., and the CHICK.N.W.A.) There are plenty of sides from baked beans to slaw to twice-cooked potato casserole. Slab’s is in the pro-sauce camp—expect four types including a tangy Alabama-style mayonnaise-based option. Plus, beers on tap include selections from local breweries.
Originally named Sugar Shack BBQ, Slab began as a food trailer in 2006. In August 2014, pit master and founder, Mark Avalos, opened a brick and mortar location in North Austin on Research Boulevard.
This is the second barbecue spot recently announced for Southwest Austin. An untitled Stiles Switch project is also in the works for the new development Belterra Village in Dripping Springs. That menu will have a Southern emphasis.
