For Vladimir Putin, Donald Trump’s win couldn’t come soon enough. Putin may reportedly accept a deal where Moscow gains significant territory in Ukraine (about the size of the US state of Virginia) and Ukraine remains neutral and forgets about any plans to join NATO or the EU.

Though Ukraine is experiencing war fatigue, so is Russia. Russia is making steady advances in the Donetsk region of Ukraine, but the Kremlin is still struggling to recruit soldiers for the conflict. The recent revelation that North Korean soldiers were fighting in Ukraine attests to this.

Even as Russia ramps up the war, with reports from Ukraine suggesting Moscow had fired its first intercontinental ballistic missile of the war, it’s become clear that a peace deal would be in the interests of Moscow, as much as Kyiv.

According to Western assessments, around 115,000 to 160,000 Russian troops have died, 90% of the personnel it had at the beginning of the war. While another 500,000 have been injured. To offset these losses, Russia has been recruiting 20,000 new soldiers a month.

Recruiting soldiers into the army has never been that easy in Russia even during peacetime. Recruits are often subject to hazing and bullying by more experienced soldiers, and as such joining the army is viewed as something to be avoided by many young Russian men. Known as dedovshchina, Russian bullying, hazing and beating of conscripts has been a notable pastime in the Russian military since the end of the 17th century.

After the Soviet Union dissolved, the Russian media exposed the appalling conditions in the military, noting that troops suffered from poor medical care and severe malnutrition. Many Russians may also remember how poorly prepared conscripts were treated who were sent off to fight the war in Chechnya in the mid-1990s.

The Russian government does not appear to be concerned about the average Russian soldier’s safety and wellbeing. Already unpopular during times of peace, this desperation to avoid being drafted into an active war becomes even more acute.

Putin appears to be threatening to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine but analysis suggests he is running out of replacement troops.

The military is also seen as a major trap to catch the poor and underprivileged. Conscripts in the Russian army are viewed as meat for the grinder; their graves are ignored and the bodies are sometimes not identified.

Most of the recruits have come from Far East republics with large indigenous populations such as Bashkortostan, Chechnya, the Republic of Sakha (Yakutzia) and Dagestan — or as far from Moscow as possible.

But even young men in Moscow are now facing an increasingly aggressive Russian state. Hundreds of thousands of Russians have fled the country, forcing the government to introduce a tougher draft law to round up troops.

With the new law, implemented on November 1 this year, instead of receiving a draft notice through the post, draft notices are now delivered online. Once the notice enters a Russian man’s digital mailbox, those called up are immediately barred from leaving the country and can face stiff penalties if they do attempt to leave.

This means that any time a Russian man is in contact with the government – to pay taxes, renew a passport or driver’s license, or receive any type of government service – the Russian government can contact them and automatically give them their draft card. Having an online presence in Russia — such as having a bank account or a mortgage or car loan – also makes it harder to evade the draft.

Since the start of the war, Russian men have resorted to all kinds of tactics to avoid being drafted – faking that they had a drug dependency, falsifying medical documents and even in some cases breaking their own bones.

Moving locations within Russia or purchasing property in someone else’s name was also a common tactic, but now these strategies have become more difficult. Someone I interviewed for this article was drafted even though they had not lived in Moscow since 2006. Struggling to find recruits, the Russian government has resorted to going after Russian citizens who live abroad.

Russia has also notably drafted prisoners, which include murderers and paedophiles. This has caused Russia’s prison population to plummet.

But Putin is running out of men. To attract more recruits, the Ministry of Defence has increased pay, making it more lucrative than civilian jobs, doubling the bonus for people enlisting in November of last year.

Relying on the North Korean military offers another solution, but North Korean troops have no combat experience, use different military tactics and most don’t speak Russian, which makes it more difficult to coordinate for specific combat operations.

Russian soldiers have complained that they do not know what to do with them. Though this would be widely unpopular in Belarus, Putin may try to force Belarus to offer support, as Belarusian soldiers are familiar with Russian tactics and operations.

In another sign of weakness, Putin is demonstrating that conventional war tactics are no longer enough. On November 19, Putin issued a threat that nuclear weapons could be used, in response to a Ukrainian attack using US-made ATACMS missiles in the western Bryansk region in Russia.

Usually when conventional war strategies are working, there is no need to lower the threshold for nuclear use.

Clearly, the war is not going particularly well for Ukraine either. They are struggling with their own recruitment issues and territorial losses. But it is a mistake to think that Putin is coming to the eventual negotiation table from a position of strength. Luckily for Putin, though he may be running out of men, a favorable deal may be on the horizon that fails to take this into account.

  1. With the exception of the uninformed troll “BigChicken” on this forum, it seems fairly clear to all that Ukrainian losses are closer to 500 to 600 thousand, Russian losses at less than 100,000, not including wounded. A simple look at obituaries and grave registry will illustrate this, Natasha. If you rely on false sources you will produce false results. There are literally hundreds of videos showing the difficulty the Ukraine is having with their “recruiting” techniques. Mainstream media are routinely publishing the losses suffered by Ukraine in terms of land held. I take no pleasure in commenting on it, and losses in war are notoriously difficult to determine, but there is no way this ends in a Ukrainian victory without westerrn intervention. Demographics, another easily researchable source, show a vaster population in Russia compared to Ukraine. As Russia has painted the conflict as existential, they have no trouble attracting recruits on a daily basis. Certainly, they emptied prisons in the Bahkmut conflict, but that time is long past. Kindly read Gilbert Doctorow, Simplicicus, or Moon of Alabama sites for alternate information, because what you have written here is beneath you, is false, and contemptible.

  3. Even intellectual ability to write a proper article is lacking in the western world. Absolutely absurd article written by a foolish professor! Professor of nonsense indeed

      1. and more.and mkre of them cant find ajob once they go home after realizing they are studying rubbish in the western world

  4. This is of course pure propaganda. Not a single sentence has any resemblence of truth in it.
A couple of points are interesting. Firstly, why is it always British professors that write these propaganda articles? Don’t British professors have any morals or scientific integrity?
Secondly, why now? This is interesting. Looks like the West has finally realized Ukraine will have to surrender soon. So they are desperately trying to spin a surrender as a win. That’s why we see statements like “Putin will have to agree to peace (after achieving all his objectives and dictating the peace treaty)”. Or that Russia in another sign of weakness showed they can hit any targer anywhere in Europe with a nuclear missile. I’m all for peace, so let’s hope the West can force Russia to accept a deal, where Russia gets everything they want.

    1. You’re right. You never see alternative opinions in Russia or China.
      How’s the weather in Leningrad?

  5. No, Putin just needs to wait for Trump to become the president, so less than 2 months. One just needs to see the responses from Biden and Zelensky after Trump won the election.

    1. So you think Trump is going to want to look weak and roll over for Putin? Trump is the same sort of vindictive narcissist as Putin, Xi and fatboy Kim.
He will make both sides ‘an offer they can’t refuse’.
Trump knows Russia is toast. They have yet another nation on their border who has gone from being a friend to enemy (de facto NATO). Their TFR’s are in the toilet. Their military has been shown to be ‘Putinkim’. They are thoroughly demoralised.
Putin will face his judgement with Old Nick by which time Russia will have collapsed. Putin will be cursed by the remaining Russians for undoing the work of Catherine the Great.

  6. Excellent comments, I cannot write anything as good. The professor is a paid stooge full of lies (narratives). Ukrainian soldiers even flee their battalions to become POW rather than die for the professor’s Western values.

  7. Perfidious Albion is currently in the midst of hysteria. Lots of Ukraine flag waving ala Guardian. Like Israel, bombing everywhere, winning nowhere.

  8. Russia has lost maybe 80K troops (with pro-NATO propaganda dramatically exaggerating higher). By contrast Ukraine has lost maybe 6X that number. That’s why when you see any random photo of Ukrainian troops for the last couple years, they are overwhelming guys in their 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. I see articles dropping little details like the Ukrainian sniper with callsign “grandpa” and that just reinforces what the photos show: It is NATO and its cannon fodder in Ukraine that are desperately short of troops, not Russia.

    1. Some facts for the author to consider: ‘Ukrainian social media is flooded with videos of the TCC “recruiters” beating men senseless, throwing them in vans and driving them off for 3 weeks of training. Ukraine has built a war cemetery near Kiev that is larger than Arlington, and has many, many more new cemeteries across the country for their war dead. Ukraine begs for NATO trainers inside Ukraine because they only send volunteers outside the country, out of fear their conscripts will flee or declare themselves refugees. Ukraine has also banned men from leaving the country without permission. But keep pushing your neocon line. Maybe you can tell us where Saddam’s secret WMDs were hidden in a future piece.

    2. 6x? No you are thinking of the Russians pushing back the Germans in WW2.
So older guys are fighting? That just proves the Ukr’s from all walks of life want to keep their land.

  9. Yikes! Another load of Brit pro-west B.S.! Russia’s morale is not lacking, its casualties are far less than those suffered by Ukraine and one would have to be a certifiable moron not to understand that Ukraine lost the U.S./NATO proxy war on Russia after the failed 2023 offensive. The West has run out of weapons, money, and now “patience” because the war is lost. Its project to weaken Russia has clearly failed and will only be solved primarily on Russia’s terms as it is clearly winning on the battlefield. To continue prolonging this debacle — especially now that Europe is in disarray — is beyond stupid.

    1. Russia is kaput. TFR’s ( a measure of morale) increased at the start of Putin’s era, but are now in the toilet. 10% are legal migrants, 1m illegal Chinese in Siberia and the % of mohamedans is projected to reach 30% in a decade.
When Putin goes, the collapse will start.

  10. The professor is British and it shows in the ignorant bias displayed in the article. Unlike the British, Russia could if it chose to create a foreign legion that would attract millions of fighters from across the world. They would fight for a salary and to satisfy the hatred they have for everything western having suffered at colonial hands for centuries.

    1. Like Tibetans or Uighurs who have suffered at the hands of Chinese.
Why aren’t these migrants heading to Russia to join in the anti-colonial flight? According to you they would get a warmer welcome than crossing the seas to get to Europe.

  11. This “professor” has given no new information, or new opinion, that is not already printed elsewhere.

    1. It’s pretty obvious it’s bad for them, but long term terrible for Russia. Your ‘china plate’ Xi is going to pick up Siberia for free.

  12. Total nonsense!
Russia has only experienced conscription for the fighting army once, in September 2022, when about 300,000 people were drafted. Before and after that period, there have been no conscripts for fighting in the Russian army.
Currently, in the summer of 2024, there are approximately 700,000 Russian soldiers fighting in Ukraine. These include professionals who joined the army voluntarily by signing a contract and volunteers who also signed such contracts, as well as those who were drafted in September 2022 and receive the same salary for their service. There are also those who are currently in hospitals with minor injuries or are on leave, bringing the total number of Russian soldiers to close to 1 million.
Young men aged 18-30 are conscripted to serve for one year in the Russian army for training. This occurs every year. During this time, they do not participate in combat operations. After completing their mandatory service, they can sign a contract with the military and become professional soldiers. Legally, they can then serve in Ukraine.

    1. So why do they need N Koreans?
Is a ‘minor injury’ a loss of a leg?
Stop drinking the Russian kool aid, this war is a disaster for Ukr (short term) and Russia (medium term). 10yrs after Putin Russia will be back to the Duchy of Moscovy, with Siberia in Chinese hands.

  13. I can help you out, but your salary depends on you not wanting to understand any common sense. Common sense solutions are not profitable to your handlers
