Watermelon cucumber agua fresca with tajin (agua de sandia con pepino) is a Mexican inspired non alcoholic watermelon drink that is perfect for summer! This cucumber melon drink is totally cool and refreshingly satisfying.
Sometimes on crazy hot summer days, all I want is a cold and refreshing drink that's not loaded with sugar. One of the reasons why this recipe for Mexican agua fresca with watermelon is perfect, is because it satisfies your thirst without using any alcohol or copious amounts of sugar.
You know who else benefits from this drink??? Pregnant women. If you are looking for a non alcoholic drink for pregnancy that's also good for you, look no further! It's been shown that cucumbers and watermelon both help with swelling of the ankles and water retention.
The combination of the sweetness of the watermelon juice and the freshness of the cucumber juice is just amazing!
So kick those feet up and tip that glass up and enjoy this lovely cucumber watermelon juice recipe!
Origins
So what is agua fresca made of? Agua fresca is a traditional Mexican drink or Mexican juice that is made by blending fresh fruits with water and lime juice. You can make agua fresca with a load of different fruits and different combinations. This is a particular agua fresca recipe with watermelon and cucumbers.
The words agua fresca literally mean "fresh water," so we are making cucumber watermelon water.
🍉 Ingredients
The ingredients for agua fresca are:
- fresh watermelon
- fresh cucumber
- water
- lime juice
- tajin
So what is Tajín? Tajín is a Mexican chili lime seasoning that is sprinkled on fruits, with paletas (Mexican ice creams), and on snacks like chips and popcorn. Its flavor is sour and salty with a little kick. To the gringo palate it can be different and somewhat intimidating at first. Once you have it a few times and acquire the taste for it, it's quite delightful!
I highly recommend not skipping the Tajín in this recipe.
🥒 Instructions
Let's begin how to make watermelon agua fresca with cucumber. I like to start out with cold watermelon and cold cucumbers. If it's not cold, you will need to add ice to your cups when you serving agua fresca.
Place some large chunks of cut up watermelon (I use a seedless watermelon) into a blender. Skin the cucumber and cut it into chunks and place it in the blender along with the juice of a lime and cold water.
Blend it on high until it is all liquified. Some people don't strain the juice after it goes through the blender but I do! I don't like any chunks or residue from the cucumber seeds in it at all. So I suggest to run it through a mesh strainer.
🍹 Serving suggestions
I like to serve these in mason jars. Take your jar or glass tumbler and a wedge of lime. rub the rim of the jar with the lime and dip in into your Tajin seasoning rimmer.
After the chili lime seasoning is on your glass, carefully pour the watermelon cucumber agua fresca into the prepared glasses and serve cold. If you want it colder, add ice cubes to each drink.
If desired, you can garnish it with watermelon, cucumbers or lime. I like to use a melon baller to make some cool watermelon balls.

This was perfectly sweet and oh so tasty. The tajin on the glass just brought it to the next level. I almost didn't grab the tajin at the store but I'm so glad I did!

This was very simple to make and I love that it wasn't full of sugar! It's also a bonus that it's non-alcoholic. It can be hard to find fun drinks that my kids also enjoy, but they definitely approved this one!
