Sautéed mushrooms can be a little tricky for some. The last thing I want are mushy, slimy mushrooms. Maybe you like that, but for me the crispier mushroom is the better, which leads me to this recipe for delicious pan seared mushrooms.
That's why in this recipe, we go beyond just plain old sautéed mushrooms and we bring it all way to to caramelized mushrooms. And if you follow this recipe, I will make it super easy too!

These buttery mushrooms with garlic and spices are a delicious side dish, or are the perfect complement to steaks and burgers. I personally love making these with steaks and guess what? My kids love these too (because they are crispy and not mushy)!
Oh and... I stole this recipe from my dad ;)
🍄 Ingredients
As opposed to some other recipes online, this mushroom seasoning does have a little kick to it because of the crushed red pepper. I love it that way. Here is the list of ingredients for crispy sautéed mushrooms:
- white button mushrooms
- salted butter
- minced garlic
- salt
- crushed red pepper
- cracked black pepper
💭 Top tip
The key to the perfect crispy mushrooms is all in browning mushrooms in butter and in a very hot pan. It's important to sauté them long enough for the mushrooms to become the perfect golden brown color.
🔪 Instructions
As we begin this recipe, let's talk about fresh button mushrooms. These are your standard cultivated mushrooms that are usually the most economical at your local grocery store.
We need to start by cleaning and prepping the mushrooms. So let's talk about how to clean button mushrooms. Usually these cultivated mushrooms have a layer of dirt on the outside. So do fresh mushrooms need to be washed? The answer is no, but they do need to be cleaned.
You should not soak or wash mushrooms in water or they will soak it up and it can mess with the texture of your dish. So how do you clean mushrooms? All you need to do is take a wet dish cloth or paper towel and gently wipe the outside of the mushroom until the dirt is removed.
There is also no need to peel mushrooms since they are cultivated. I do cut off the end of the stem, since it can get woody.
Now that we have cleaned mushrooms, it's time to cut them. Just sliced them with a sharp knife into pieces or sections. They will cook down in the pan, so don't fret about how small or big you cut them.
Now, onto how to caramelize mushrooms...
In a large pot (I prefer stainless steel) or Dutch oven, add the butter, prepared mushrooms and all of the spices. Heat the pot and sauté the mushrooms on medium-high heat. You want it on a hotter heat so that they will brown and caramelize nicely.
⏲️ Cooking time
So how long do you sauté mushrooms?
Sauté all of the ingredients for 15-20 minutes, stirring frequently so it doesn't burn. You want to make sure to cook it long enough for it to caramelize completely and get that nice golden brown color.
Once the mushrooms cook down (and they will cook down alot) and get that deep color, they are ready to serve!
Check out the sautéing mushrooms below. The first pic, they aren't quite done. Those would be soggy mushrooms, the second pic are done, crispy and caramelized.
🥩 Serving suggestions
These garlic mushrooms with butter complement most beef dishes really well! I think they are best when served with a grilled steak (up your game and make it a Wagyu steak) or a burger! I would really want to have some sautéed mushrooms with steak right about now!
📖 Variations
Another popular way to vary these, is to make caramelized mushrooms and onions together. Slice ½ of a sweet Vidalia onion and add it in with the mushrooms. Cook it the same way and these are best to serve with burgers.

It’s “complement”, not “compliment”. Flavors complement each other.
