The Amazing Race 6 is the sixth season of the reality television show, The Amazing Race. It premiered on November 16, 2004 and ended on February 5, 2005 on CBS.
Synopsis[]
The next 11 teams ready to globe-trot the world are at the starting gate awaiting the official start of the sixth edition of the Emmy Award-winning THE AMAZING RACE .[1]
Production[]
In May 2004, CBS ordered the sixth installment of the show, despite the fact that The Amazing Race 5 had not yet aired. Early renewal was likely due to the success of the changes made in season 5.[2] CBS also delayed the airing of season 6 until late in the fall and moved it out of its proposed Saturday time-slot, to create a "cool down" period between races, in the hopes that this would help continue the newfound ratings success.[3]
Applications for The Amazing Race 6 were due on April 13, 2004. Semi-finalist interviews were held in May 2004 and final casting interviews were selected at Los Angeles in June 2004.
The sixth season of The Amazing Race was filmed between August and September 2004, for which they traveled 40,000 miles (64,000 km), spanning 10 different countries in four continents. The show moved to Tuesdays at 9 p.m., staying there for 2 more seasons.
American Airlines and Royal Caribbean International were the two official sponsors of the seasons and would provide the prizes awarded to first place teams on certain legs.
This season featured a visit to Sri Lanka, where filming occurred just a few months before the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami. The episodes aired after the earthquake had devastated the island nation and all of the sights and locations the teams had visited. A special message was narrated by Phil Keoghan at the beginning of the episodes featuring Sri Lanka, dedicating them to the victims and to those helping the recovery.
Twists/Changes[]
- Transportation from the Starting Line: Similar to the inaugural season, teams are required to use a public transportation to the nearest airport.
- Superleg: A Superleg consisted of 2 legs formed into one Double-Length Leg with a rest period midway throughout the leg. It is first appeared in Leg 6.
- Roadblock: Another big change from the previous seasons where teams had a maximum number of Roadblocks performed by a team member without restrictions. Now, both team members would have at least a limit of six Roadblocks each throughout the Race. This format has subsequently become a traditional norm for future seasons, including international versions.
- Yield: A Yield is now reduced to three per race. It allows any one team to force another team to stop racing for a predetermined amount of time.
- Rules and Penalties:
- A team grabs an extra clue would incur a 30-minute penalty.
- A team takes the other teams' car would also incur a 30-hour penalty.
- A team member fails to complete the Roadblock would incur a 4-hour penalty.

Trivia[]
Franchise Records[]
- First time visits to Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Senegal, Hungary, Ethiopia, and Sri Lanka.
- First season to have a superleg.
- The superleg was created by accident as Leg 6 in Hungary was originally planned to be a Non-Elimination Leg, with the last team to arrive being stripped of their accumulated money. However, producers learned that begging is illegal in Hungary, which would have made it almost impossible to collect any money. To avoid this, they instead combined this leg with the intended Leg 7.
- Least amount of all-male teams, 1 (tied with The Amazing Race 5, The Amazing Race 12, and The Amazing Race 29).
- First season to have winning prizes on every leg.
- Introduction of the Roadblock limit wherein each team member may not perform more than six Roadblocks.
- First season to have the same-gender teams eliminated in the first three legs.
- This was the first time that the final eight teams were co-ed teams.
- Second season (after Season 5) where all the final three teams are co-ed teams.
- Coincidentally in both seasons, all the final three teams were in "love relationships".
- This season set a record that seven out of 11 teams were in "love relationships".
US Records[]
- One of two standard-format seasons to have no teams returning in The Amazing Race: All-Stars (2007).
- The first season with the most couples in love, 7 (tied with The Amazing Race 15).
- Second season in which the race began and ended in the same city (after The Amazing Race 1).
- First time that the race did not begin on either the West Coast or the East Coast.
- First season that the Finish Line was located in a Midwestern state of the United States.
Reception[]
- Korey Karnes at Chicago Tribune (12/03/2004): "Smart 'Race' continues to amaze"
- Scott D. Pierce at Deseret News (02/15/2005): "Amazing couple seeks Phil's help"
