Pollination Investigation (Overland Park, KS)

Love pollinators? So do we! That's why we invited the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service and Smithsonian Gardens to share their exhibit, "Pollination Investigation," with us. The exhibit will be on display at the LongHouse Visitor Center at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens now through November. Come explore the essential role of pollinators through bilingual panels in English and Spanish featuring bees, butterflies, bats, hummingbirds, flies, moths and more. Entry into LongHouse and the exhibit is FREE. Admission is only required when entering the gardens.

Mushroom Habitats Class (Fort Bragg, CA)

While we wait patiently for peak season... let's learn where our magnificent mushrooms like to live! Join Naturalist and Mycologist Mario Abreu for a visual presentation on mushrooms and their substrates followed by a brief walk to find some examples in the Gardens. This class will explore common mushroom habitats with focus on the associated trees. Mario will also cover how mushrooms benefit from trees, tree identification basics, which mushroom species are associated with certain trees, and more.

Holiday Train Show (Bronx, NY)

The New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) announces the return of the beloved Holiday Train Show® for its 33rd year of enchanting train displays and cherished seasonal traditions. Enter a winter wonderland unlike any other as the timeless holiday magic of rail travel fills the historic Enid A. Haupt Conservatory with nostalgia. Model locomotives and trolleys trundle through a showcase of nearly 200 twinkling, plant-based replicas of famed local architecture, creating a cityscape in miniature. From the warmth of NYBG’s landmark glasshouse to the picture-perfect outdoor display, witness by day or night a meticulously crafted world brimming with the lively energy of New York City during the holidays. The exhibition opens on Saturday, November 16, 2024, and runs through Monday, January 20, 2025. Tickets go on sale to the general public starting September 12, 2024, at www.nybg.org.

Monday Mushroom Walks (Fort Bragg, CA)

Take a guided tour of the MCBG Mushroom Collection! The Gardens is home to more than 160 species of wild mushrooms during fall and winter. Mushrooms are the fruiting bodies of some types of fungi. Normally hidden underground, these reproductive structures lie dormant until the rainy season, when they sprout above the earth. Enjoy an introduction to mushroom identification followed by a guided walk with Naturalist and Mycologist, Mario Abreu each Monday from November 18 through December 23. Mario will begin with an approximately 45-minute introduction followed by a 2-hour guided field walk. Please remember, mushrooms found at Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens should stay at Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens... DO NOT PICK OR COLLECT from our botanical collection!

Each session of Mushroom ID for Beginners consists of an interactive lecture (Sat) with demonstrations and an optional Field ID Walk (Sun) to find mushrooms associated with the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens' native plant communities. Naturalist and Mycologist, Mario Abreu will teach the basic taxonomic identifying features that distinguish mushrooms from each other, where each unique mushroom species can be found, when they can be found, and the myths associated with them. The guided walk is optional, class participants can also explore our wild mushroom collection on their own time armed with a list of species commonly found at the Gardens.

Thomas Dambo’s TROLLS: Save the Humans (Memphis, TN)

At the great “Trolliefolkyfest” in a secret place, six young trolls made a pact to band together and help save the humans by rediscovering nature and teaching us how to live in harmony with the earth. They recognized the hope within each of us to take action and make positive changes toward a greater future. From the communicator Ronja Redeye to rebel Basse Bueller and Ibbi Pip the optimist, these gentle giants are here to save the humans. Lean into the lore that this larger-than-life fairytale brings to the Garden this spring as art, nature, and messages of sustainability intertwine in this unique outdoor exhibition.
