Finn Mertens (also known as Finn the Human) is the main protagonist in Adventure Time. He also appeared in the spin-off series Adventure Time: Distant Lands and returned in the spin-off series Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake. He was voiced by Jeremy Shada in most appearances. The character made his debut in the original pilot, where he is named "Pen" and voiced by Zack Shada, Jeremy's older brother. Jonathan Frakes voices Finn as an adult in some appearances and David Bradley voiced Finn as an elderly person in the Distant Lands special, "Together Again".
Prior to the start of Adventure Time, Finn was adopted as an infant by two anthropomorphic dogs named Joshua and Margaret, who found him in the woods. His best friend and adoptive brother Jake the Dog (John DiMaggio) accompany him on many of his adventures in Ooo, the fictional world that the series is set in. The mystery surrounding Finn's origins and whether he is the last human left in Ooo is a major part of the character's narrative arc. Later in the series, it is revealed that there are other humans still living in Ooo and that Finn's parents Martin Mertens and Minerva Campbell came from a community of survivors living on a chain of islands.
Finn has received universal praise for his character development and coming-of-age narrative, which saw the character mature from a boy into a wise young man. Adam Muto, former showrunner for Adventure Time, has stated that Finn's progression from an aggressive and reckless boy into a more mature wise person was one of his favorite character arcs to write. A gender-swapped version of Finn called Fionna appeared in the third-season episode "Fionna and Cake" and is the main character of the spin-off series Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake. Finn returns in this aforementioned series as an adult adventurer.

Design and Voice Acting[]
Series creator Pendleton Ward has stated that he wrote Finn, and Adventure Time as a whole, as though he were playing a session of Dungeons & Dragons, a tabletop role-playing game. Ward commented that Finn's motivations are noble, with a desire to "slay monsters, explore dungeons, find loot." Ward spent much of his childhood at home, and he described his "[indoor] adventure experience" as inspiring Finn and Jake the Dog's adventures. Early on in the development of the show, Ward had intended for Finn and Jake to be nomads who lived in tents. However, this was changed to having them live in a permanent home at Cartoon Network's request. The character first appeared in the short film "Adventure Time", which centers around rescuing Princess Bubblegum (Hynden Walch) from the evil Ice King (John Kassir). This short aired as part of Nickelodeon's Random! Cartoons showcase in 2008. Zack Shada voiced the character, then called Pen, in the short.
Zack Shada was too old for the role when the series was picked up by Cartoon Network, and his younger brother Jeremy, 12 years old at the time, auditioned. According to Jeremy Shada, the showrunners did not at first realize that he was Zack's younger brother. He said that: "they just thought they got lucky with someone that sounded like the original." Shada's voice noticeably cracked and changed during the filming of Adventure Time as he was undergoing puberty. Ward decided that Shada would not be recast when his voice changed. Instead, the character of Finn was gradually aged as Shada's voice naturally deepened, and the themes of the show matured with the character. Older versions of Finn appear in several episodes of the show. Jonathan Frakes voices two alternate adult versions of Finn in the season 5 episodes "Puhoy" and "Dungeon Train". David Bradley voices an elderly Finn in the Distant Lands episode, "Together Again".
Like other Adventure Time characters, Finn is drawn with rubbery "limp noodle" limbs and a simple but expressive face. He has several missing teeth, which Ward explained as being due to the character never having been to a dentist. He typically wears a signature white bear hat, a teal shirt, dark blue shorts, black shoes, and a green backpack. Finn's visual design resembles Bueno the Bear, another character created by Ward. Finn and Bueno share some other similarities, including an enjoyment of beatboxing.
Finn was always fun because he started very agro [sic] and that was fun to write for a while, but as he got older it didn't make sense to keep writing him that way. He became a mellower version of himself and more introspective and that was satisfying to follow.
The show depicts Finn dealing with the struggles of adolescence and coming to terms with the complexities of life. Over time, the show's creators decided to further develop Finn's backstory, including his parents and whether he was truly the last human left in Ooo. A major theme of the series is that Finn begins to see the world in more nuanced terms, rather than the naive outlook he demonstrated in earlier seasons. Although many of the show's conflicts were about good versus evil at the start of the series, they become more complex as it progresses. Adventure Time composer Tim Kiefer said that the show had gradually became an exploration of the "Hero's journey", through Finn.
In the early seasons of the series, Finn is enthusiastic and readily resorts to violence to settle conflicts. About this aspect of Finn's character, Ward said that he chose to "add a little wrath" to add depth to the character. By the end of the series, Finn is much more reserved. Adventure Time showrunner Adam Muto stated that this theme is part of the reason why Finn did not have a sword for much of the finale. Muto said that this story arc made Finn one of the most satisfying characters for him to write on the show.
Background[]
It is revealed in "Min and Marty" that Finn was born on Hub Island (one of the human-inhabited islands outside of The Land of Ooo) to his father Martin Mertens and his mother, Minerva Campbell. Having been a known con artist, Martin is confronted by an old foe and forced to flee the house with baby Finn while Minerva was at work. Martin brings Finn onto a raft, only to be attacked by the Guardian. Finn and Martin are separated as a result, with Finn being sent adrift towards Ooo and Martin disappearing.
As shown in "Memories of Boom Boom Mountain," the infant Finn eventually made it to Ooo, where he ended up alone in a forest. There, he went "boom boom" (Finn's word for defecation) on a large leaf and fell on it. He lay there crying until Jake's parents, Joshua and Margaret, rescued him from the wilderness and brought him to their home. They raised him alongside Jake, who, along with Jermaine, became Finn's adopted brother.
At end of the Distant Lands episode "BMO", Finn and Jake are shown at younger ages than their first appearances on Adventure Time, stick battling in front of the Tree House. By this point in time, Joshua and Margaret have most likely passed away, and Finn and Jake presumably no longer live with Jermaine.
It is revealed in "Susan Strong," that Finn knows nothing of his human parents or any other humans. In "Henchman," Finn states that Jake told him that he originated from a cabbage as a joke. However, Finn later learns about his biological father, Martin, in the episode "Billy's Bucket List" and his biological mother, Minerva, in the episode "Min and Marty."
Status as the Last Human[]
- Main article: Humans
Finn was, for a long time, the only confirmed human in the Land of Ooo, to the point where he had an epithet, "The Human", and was referred to by many as "Finn the Human". The reason for this is revealed in the episode "Her Parents," as Lady Rainicorn's dad believed that humans were extinct.
Up until "Susan Strong," Finn believes he has never met another human and becomes morose and "soul-searchy" when he thinks about it. However, Finn encounters Susan Strong, a member of a tribe of mutants called Hyoomans. However, in "Beautopia," it is hinted that Susan Strong is unlike the rest of her tribe and may potentially be another human. In "Dark Purple," Susan removes her hat and reveals she is a human with a device on her head, making her possibly some sort of cyborg. However, it is unknown if Finn knew about this.
As of "Betty", Finn is no longer the last confirmed human because Betty Grof traveled through time from before the Mushroom War.
In "Billy's Bucket List," Finn is told by a deceased Billy that his father, Martin Mertens, is still alive and is trapped in the Crystal Citadel. This prompts Finn to travel to free his father in the episode "Escape from the Citadel," making him one of four known humans in existence at the time.
In "Preboot" it is revealed by the "human plus" Dr. Gross that are more humans outside of Ooo. This is further explained in the miniseries Islands, where it is revealed that roughly a thousand years prior to the main events of the series, a group of surviving humans from the Mushroom War fled Ooo on a container ship (as seen in Stakes) to escape from the vampires, oozers, and a comet. They eventually settled on a secluded island chain far from the mainland. Over the next thousand years, their community thrived and developed into an advanced technological society. While it was a veritable utopia, there were those few who occasionally grew dissatisfied with their rigidly structured lives and attempted to flee the island; these "hiders" were, in turn, hunted down and returned by specially trained "seekers." Finn, Jake, Susan Strong, and BMO went to the islands so that Finn could find out about his past and his species.
Finn for the first time saw large amounts of humans. Finn met his mother, Minerva Campbell while on the island. His mother is no longer a human and is now a virtual consciousness (A.I.) due to sacrificing her body in order to treat the human race from a virus. Finn was offered to live on the island, but Finn decided to go home to Ooo rather than live with the rest of his species. So, after the miniseries Islands, Finn being "the last human" was completely dispelled. Though in the Islands CN Side, Adam Muto stated that Finn being the last human in the world was never the most important thing about him.[1]
Although various other humanoids exist in the Land of Ooo, most have been confirmed by the show's creator, Pendleton Ward, to be mutants, such as Penny, Phil, or the Old Man Henchman.[2][3] According to Pendleton Ward's FAQ page, even Finn is mutated in some way.[4]
Appearance and Equipment[]
Finn is a teenage human, resembling one in most of his appearances throughout the series. He was roughly five feet at the show's debut, but sometime between "The Cooler" and "The Pajama War," he underwent a growth spurt and is currently nearly as tall as Princess Bubblegum. He is missing several teeth due to his habit of biting trees, poor dental hygiene, and gnawing on rocks among other things.[5]
Although his eyes typically lack detail and appear as small black dots, they are shown to have colour in "The Enchiridion!" while Finn is undergoing Dark Magician's trials. His left eye is green while his right eye is blue, characteristic of the genetic condition heterochromia. However, as stated by lead character designer Andy Ristaino, "That was a special occasion. The heterochromatic effect was a byproduct of him being hypnotized by that guardian dude." He went on to confirm that both of Finn's eyes are blue, and this was also seen both in this episode and in "Together Again".[6]
Finn's weight seems to fluctuate between episodes, with him seeming chubbier in some instances than others. Pendleton Ward stated on the "In Your Footsteps" commentary on the Season 4 DVD that his weight depends on how active he is adventuring, along with his diet, so it changes frequently.
In "Escape from the Citadel," Finn's right arm is torn off and coated by the blood of a Citadel Guardian, which grows a small flower. He later got his arm back in the episode, "Breezy," where the flower stub matured into a tree and broke away like a cocoon, revealing a new limb, with a green thorn protruding from the palm. This thorn was later revealed in "The Comet" to be part of the Grass Sword sticking out from his skin, as his new arm was made of grass.
In "Reboot", Finn's Grass Sword detached from his arm and fused with the Finn Sword which combined into Fern. He then has a light gray mechanical arm as of "Two Swords". In the episode "Come Along With Me", his mechanical arm is bitten off when entering GOLB's mouth.
In "Obsidian", he appears in his 20s as an adult and has a full-grown beard, along with a tattoo of Jake on his chest, implying that his adoptive brother may have died by this time. He also has more battle scratches.
In "Together Again", Elderly Finn appears as an old man with a long, white beard and wrinkly skin.
In "Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake" he is seen as a 29-year-old man with a well-groomed blond beard. He still wears his backpack, but now he's wearing jean shorts and has visible hair.
Hair[]
Finn has blond hair which is first seen in "To Cut a Woman's Hair," where Finn removes his hat, and incredibly long, golden locks of hair flow out. His hair has a glowing sheen and extended his body length until he cuts it off and gives it to the Tree Witch. His hair slowly begins to regrow throughout several episodes until "Another Way" where it has grown to his shoulders. By "The Lich," Finn has grown his hair slightly longer than in its appearance in previous episodes. However, in the episode "Davey," Finn shaved off almost all of his hair for the second time so he can disguise himself as 'Davey' but begins to regrow it in "Little Dude," and the episodes after it. In "Puhoy," an adult Finn is shown to have grown facial hair and his hair becomes curly although since that part of the episode was a daydream it may not be 100% accurate. In "May I Come In?" Finn's long hair is shown to have grown back to around the length it was in "To Cut a Woman's Hair," when Finn takes off his hat while acting as bait to lure out The Hierophant. Finn has once again shaved off most of his hair as revealed in "Temple of Mars" as a result of catching lice from Marceline. Finn's hair became mostly stubble after shaving it. Finn takes his hat off again in "Come Along With Me" unveiling that he has grown back some of his hair since the episode, "Temple of Mars."
Finn appears to not care for his hair much whatsoever, showed in how he frequently cuts it completely bald when asked (such as in "To Cut a Woman's Hair"), and in "Davey" when he shaves and slathers his hair in molasses, while BMO cries and claims Finn's "beauty is destroyed" and then says he looks like "the devil!"
In the Adventure Time: Distant Lands special "Obsidian", an older Finn appears. His hair has darkened and is now a darker dirty blonde colour rather than the golden-yellow blonde from when he was younger.
Clothing[]
- Main article: Finn's hat
Finn typically wears a Munsell blue ("color #0093AF") T-shirt, denim shorts, a two-colored lime green circular backpack, rolled-down white socks, and a pair of black shoes. Finn's most prominent attire is a white hat with two "ears" (which Joshua calls "nubs") sticking out on top that covers his entire head minus his face. The hat is inspired by a character called Bueno, a bear from one of Pendleton Ward's comics, which pays homage to the character. Finn can occasionally be seen in variations of his standard outfit. In "Ocean of Fear," his footwear appears to be black booties with white cuffs. In "It Came from the Nightosphere," Finn has a small pocket sewn onto his shirt that he carries Jake in. This appears again in "Davey" where he uses it to hide Jake while Finn steals the keys from the guards as he breaks the former out of jail. During "In Your Footsteps," the Bear wears Finn's clothes, which suggests that Finn has multiple sets of the same outfit, including his hat. However, in "Little Dude," when Finn's hat comes to life and is set free, Jake tells Finn, "Okay, let's go skin an evil bear," which may imply that Finn only had one hat.
Aside from his normal outfit, Finn can be seen wearing a cream-yellow sweater in colder areas such as the Ice Kingdom but would wear his pink sweater made by Princess Bubblegum occasionally. In "Holly Jolly Secrets Part II," he wears a dark blue sweater with Christmas decorations on it and a green scarf. Finn also wears white briefs that make their first appearance in "City of Thieves" when Penny steals his shorts at the end of the episode. In "Who Would Win," he was shown to wear a different pair with red elastic. Finn sleeps in red footie pajamas that appear in many episodes, but in the animated short, he sleeps in a red sleeping bag in his regular clothes. In the series, the sleeping bag is beige.
As an older man in his mid to late 20s, Finn appears to be not wearing a shirt anymore due to his tattoo of Jake.
Weapons[]
- Main article: Finn's swords
Finn has had a total of five major swords, not including his many temporary ones. He originally favored Scarlet, the Golden Sword, however after being turned into a 4-D Sword and then destroyed by a black hole in "The Real You", Finn is shown using the Root Sword (having a pink/silver blade and a red, twisted "root" handle) introduced in "Mystery Train". Finn's backpack also gains a new strap that can hold the sword. (3) In "Dad's Dungeon", Finn and Jake venture into Joshua's dungeon, built by Jake's father to toughen Finn up. Inside the dungeon, Finn retrieves the Demon Sword, which he used as his primary weapon until it was transformed into the Grape Sword and was destroyed in "Play Date". following these events, he purchases the Grass Sword, as seen in "Blade of Grass". This sword was lost along with his right arm, after Finn's encounter with his father in "Escape from the Citadel". Despite this, the sword was still part of him until "Reboot". After Finn's grass sword was destroyed, he acquired the Finn Sword in the episode "Is That You?". The blade was created when Finn interacted with an alternate Finn from the past, creating a paradox. Finn first uses the sword in "Dentist". When the glass on the Finn Sword was broken by the Grass Sword, Finn stops using it and instead uses the Root Sword. The Finn Sword makes a return in "Preboot" and "Reboot", however at the end of the two-part episode it merges with Finn's grass sword and creates Fern, making Finn lose his arm again, and permanently destroying the Finn Sword. The Night Sword was created by Peppermint Butler in "Marcy & Hunson". it was given to Finn to protect himself from Princess Bubblegum's family. The sword was said to be very powerful, and it contains dark magic from the Nightosphere. It has a demonic eyeball that reveals a compass in the middle of the crossguard.
- Main article: Finn's crossbows
In "Conquest of Cuteness," Finn was shown to have a crossbow. He uses a different one in "The New Frontier," although it appears he is less proficient with it than with a sword.
Personality and Traits[]
Although at times impulsive, aggressive and short tempered, Finn is a kind, brave, selfless, and righteous boy. His aspirations to become a great hero makes him somewhat of a moral sheriff in the Land of Ooo, as he is willing to help and protect any innocent person or creature. Finn has a very strong sense of responsibility and becomes upset when he is unable to help others. Due to this and being somewhat simple-minded, Finn often feels conflicted when it is unclear whether something is good or evil as exemplified by his dealings with Marceline in the episode "Henchman."
Despite his heroic nature, Finn also takes a liking to "normal life" without any recognition or praise for being a hero and demonstrates this in "Davey."
Finn is also almost incapable of doing anything evil or unjust, and will struggle greatly against doing such things, as seen in several episodes such as taking part in thievery in "City of Thieves" or killing a neutrally aligned ant in "The Enchiridion!." However, Finn undergoes a slight change in "Wake Up" after he realizes that his father, whom he had high hopes of being a great hero, is nothing more than a selfish criminal. This, coupled with the loss of his favorite arm and sword due to his father's selfishness, pushes Finn to the point of wanting revenge. This is shown in "The Tower," where he attempts to go into space by building up a tower so that he could find his father, punch him, and take his arm. However, in the end, Finn learns to control his feelings of revenge with the help of Princess Bubblegum.
While he portrays himself as a rough and tough hero, Finn has a tender side that is capable of love and compassion, as shown by his boyhood crush on Princess Bubblegum and his brotherly relationship with Jake. Finn is also able to act like a gentleman when it comes to ladies. However, Finn seems to hate romantic scenes to the point of vomiting as seen in "Go With Me." However, Finn demonstrates growth in accepting romance and physical love as he willingly kisses Princess Bubblegum in "Too Young" and his latest ex-girlfriend, Flame Princess, in "Burning Low." His tolerance is seen again near the end of "Dream of Love," as he is no longer disgusted by Tree Trunks and Mr. Pigs' passionate kissing. Finn's care for his friends makes him very protective of them as demonstrated when Tree Trunks almost gets killed in the episode "Tree Trunks" and Jake in "The New Frontier." Overall, Finn is a very kind and selfless person who is always putting the safety of others above his own. Jake comments on his adopted brother by saying that "he is a good kid with a kind heart."
In the episode "Rainy Day Daydream," it is shown that Finn believes that "imagination is for turbonerds who can't handle how kick-butt reality is" and that he finds real-life to be better than anything imaginary. Finn then refuses to use his imagination until he has to reactivate Jake's "bombastic personality" in his imagination land, (which was just a basic gray and white empty plane hinting that Finn is not very imaginative). However, this is disputable when the gnomes harness the energy from Finn's imagination in the episode "Power Animal" despite it being inhabited with a few dainty creatures such as Bellamy Bug. The gnomes state that Finn's imagination is powerful enough to affect the real world (like Jake's but to a lower degree) and turn on Jake's imagination.
Finn can also be very stubborn; such as in "Memories of Boom Boom Mountain," "Wizard," "Dungeon," "Rainy Day Daydream," and especially in "Another Way." This is likely a reason why Finn is often determined to work without taking the easy way out as seen in "Business Time" and "The Real You." Finn can also be easily tricked, as in "The Eyes" when Jake convinces him that the giant hawks would take the horse to a land of sunshine and love stuff and take care of him. He can get overly angry and yell as in "Trouble in Lumpy Space" and "Tree Trunks," but immediately feels guilt and remorse and apologizes when he can. Finn is also quick to try and resolve problems that he may have caused, such as when he caused Flame Princess to get hurt by the Ice King. Finn is also empathetic and this was developed when he was an infant since no one (except Jake's parents Joshua and Margaret) helped him.
As a courageous warrior and a fearless thrill-seeker, Finn enjoys putting himself in the midst of danger simply because he enjoys a challenge as shown in "Jake Suit." However, he is also shown to have several fears. In "Another Way" and "King Worm", he demonstrates a fear of clowns. Also, in "King Worm," he shows a fear of Bubblegum calling him too young. In both "King Worm" and "Ocean of Fear", Finn has an unexplained phobia of the ocean, or thalassophobia, despite the fact that he can effortlessly come into contact with any other body of water. Other fears that Finn has are the Ghost Lady, King Worm, and the Lich. Finn's fears change in "Billy's Bucket List," after he destroys the Fear Feaster, a manifestation of his fears, with his grass sword while attempting to go into the ocean to fulfill Billy's wish. The Fear Feaster's death seems to have eliminated all of Finn's fears, or at least his fear of the ocean.
Despite being mischievous from time to time, Finn is a very kind-hearted person. It's shown multiple times that he shows clear concern for others, even for those who have willingly hurt him, such as in "The Enchiridion," he returned the dollar to the giant (note that this was the very same giant who ate his beloved brother Jake and even kept insisting that he was dead). Furthermore, he shows clear contempt for anything that is done out of immoral reasons and a consistent drive for righteousness—to "do the right thing."
Finn, like his brother Jake, is also afraid of unknown vampires, as shown in "The Empress Eyes" when he hears Ice King breaking twigs. Thinking that it was a vampire, he starts throwing vampire hunting sticks into thin air.
Finn is also shown as willing to sacrifice himself in order to save others, as seen in the episode "James." With all other plans of escaping the Oozers showing no promise, Finn offered himself as a sacrifice without hesitation, so the others may escape. Though, He was knocked out and Princess Bubblegum convinced James to be the sacrifice instead.
Finn has a tendency to repress his emotions and put them away in a mental space he calls "The Vault". Instead, he prefers to deal with his emotions by relying on adventuring and violence, which has led him to become emotionally stunted and causes him to make some morally dubious decisions. In "Frost and Fire", Finn impulsively manipulates Flame Princess and Ice King into fighting each other based on dreams he had, not considering the kind of emotional impact this would have on Flame Princess. In "Come Along With Me", Jake and Jermaine discover Finn's vault, which contains a manifestation of his greatest fears and insecurities. This demonstrates how these issues have left a serious psychological mark on him despite his generally positive outward appearance. Though he has made progress in this area as he's matured, Jake's death caused him to regress to his previous mentality of adventuring to ignore his pain. In the episode "Simon Petrikov", when Simon is experiencing depression due to losing Betty and being stuck in a time he doesn't belong, Finn takes Simon adventuring to make him feel better. During the adventure, as Simon recalls his past with Betty, Finn tells him to forget about sad stuff since it gets people nowhere. This demeanor reflects Finn's attempts to ignore the pain of Jake's death and inability to move on, as he would admit to Jake in the afterlife that a part of him was always waiting to die just to get the chance to see Jake again.
Abilities[]
Physical[]
Despite his age and appearance, Finn seems to be quite strong and athletic; he can be seen wrestling full-grown Marauders, the large grass ogre Donny, and a general variety of monsters and creatures several times his size. Finn is also capable of lifting up Princess Bubblegum, as shown in "Mortal Recoil" when he picks her up and puts her in her bed, and capable of lifting up Marceline as seen in "Daddy's Little Monster." In addition, he is able to pick up a tree and hit Barb, a giant spider, in "Web Weirdos." In "Another Way," Finn is able to run long distances while carrying a giant cyclops' eye. Lastly, in "Dad's Dungeon," when Finn stabs the Evil Monster in the eye, he is able to lift it up slightly off the ground and flip it into the pit. Being the size it is, the giant Evil Monster should have weighed at least several tons, thus showing Finn's strength. Finn is also agile as he can jump very high and even make his arms and legs bend in inhuman ways, as during the Science Dance and when he uses "spaghetti limbs" (waving his arms and legs, which Jake can also do). In "The New Frontier," it is shown that Finn can make fire using friction from his hands.
Finn is very tolerant of pain as in "No One Can Hear You" he merely says "whatever," when the Stag breaks his legs. Finn can also endure high temperatures, as seen in "Jake Suit" as he allows Jake to dip his head in lava, and also in "Rattleballs", when he sits in a mini barbecue. This may be because he is already accustomed to heat from his relationship with Flame Princess. Also, in "The Lich", he is able to break the Enchiridion on his knee without any sign of pain, demonstrating considerable strength and resilience. He even tries to teach Jake how to tolerate pain in "Jake Suit," when he says, "just pretend like every bruise is a hickey from the universe." Finn seems to have impeccable balance, as he is able to balance himself on two wheels in his wheelchair in the episode "No One Can Hear You", though he refers to it as "skills." Finn is known to have deuteranopia, a form of heredity dichromatism that makes it difficult to distinguish green hues from red, as shown in "Red Starved". As this is a sex-linked genetic condition inherited on the X chromosome, Finn must have inherited the condition from his mother.
Finn has obtained immunity to electricity thanks to magic spring water in "Flute Spell".
This ability seems to have stuck with him as we see him display the immunity of electricity in "Preboot" against a giant electric eel and again in "The Light Cloud" against the Great Guardian.
Mental[]
Finn has the ability to mentally fight psychic abilities. The first time he shows this during the Lich's attempt to control his mind. The second time was against Goliad, as he was constantly able to manipulate his own thoughts in order to avoid revealing the plan to defeat her, allowing Princess Bubblegum to create Stormo.
Finn can focus for a very long time as shown in "Still" when he spends hours telepathically summoning an Astral Beast. As demonstrated in "The Creeps," Finn can lock unwanted memories in "The Vault," which is later seen in "King Worm." However, this is considered a normal human ability that occurs where certain memories are removed from consciousness if it is too painful or traumatic for them to recall. Finn also has the ability to read and write, and he can also do simple math.
Fighting Style[]
Finn is proficient in several forms of combat, including hand-to-hand, magic, and swordsmanship. When using hand-to-hand combat, he is an aggressive fighter, combining some forms of martial arts or his amazing swordsmanship skills. Finn prefers overpowering his opponents, but he is also quick enough to understand an opponent's weakness or using his environment to win a fight. He also received training from the old gumball robot Rattleballs which dramatically improved his sword skills and his reflexes to greater levels. Finn also spent months being blind while trapped inside The Hall of Egress, learning how to fight and survive without sight.
Creativity[]
Besides combat, Finn displays many other impressive abilities in handicrafts. He has some origami skills, as shown in "Ricardio the Heart Guy," in which he makes Princess Bubblegum a paper crane, as well as in "Marceline's Closet," in which he makes a paper airplane. In addition to that Finn can also draw as seen in "The Thin Yellow Line" which he states that he isn't very good at it, as well as in "Mysterious Island" where he draws BMO and Susan. He is shown to be able to construct a sculpture of the Candy Kingdom from his saliva for Princess Bubblegum in "The Real You." Finn is also somewhat gifted at constructing simple machines, such as the catapult in "The Witch's Garden."
Musical[]
Finn enjoys singing; after swallowing a tiny computer, he gains the ability to Auto-tune his voice on command, although he can sing without it as well. Apparently, Finn can also play the flute, as seen in "Prisoners of Love," where he plays a short lick before javelin-throwing it at Ice King. Unfortunately, the flute falls apart before it could hit him. Because of this, Finn is not seen playing the flute until "The Lich" as Farmworld Finn and near the climax of "Finn the Human" when he shoves it into Tromo's nose. Later, in "Flute Spell", he helps Huntress Wizard by trying to summon the Forest Spirit. He is also very good at beatboxing as seen in "It Came from the Nightosphere" and "What Was Missing."
In "Gut Grinder," Finn tries to play Jake's viola, but Jake says he stinks. Jake even imitates his footprints and said: "I'm Finn the Human, and I stink at viola." However, during "Death in Bloom," Finn panicked over what instrument to pick, supposedly because he could not play any of them, and settles for sleigh bells. In the episode "Go With Me," Finn is seen playing the lute. In "Daddy's Little Monster," he is seen playing the tambourine.
Miscellaneous[]
Finn is very good at playing a video game called Adventure Master, which he and Jake play on BMO from time to time. Finn can also spit very long distances, as he demonstrates in "Evicted!," when he spits on Marceline, "My Two Favorite People," when he spits on Tiffany's face, and in "Web Weirdos," when he spits on birds flying overhead, while suspended upside down on a giant spider web. In "Dungeon," one of the trials that Jake says Finn would have breezed through is a spitting competition against a goblin-like creature. In "Burning Low," Finn is shown to be able to spit water incredibly high into the air. In "Who Would Win," Finn showers Jake with an abnormal amount of saliva through spitting. He also handles his sword with his right hand, suggesting he may be ambidextrous, able to use both hands with equal skill. This is also seen in "Frost & Fire," where Finn writes with his left and right hands and, occasionally, both at the same time. Finn is able to cook, although he leaves this task mostly to Jake. However, in "In Your Footsteps," it mentions and shows him making Finn Cakes.
Temporary/Magical[]
Finn and Jake gain magical abilities in the episode "Wizard," but they never use those abilities in any other episode. Pendleton Ward later revealed on his Spring that all of the magic that Finn and Jake gained in that episode was contained in their robes, which were destroyed.[7] Likewise, in "The Chamber of Frozen Blades," Finn and Jake gain ice-ninja skills, but it is unlikely they will use them again because, according to Adam Muto, "They didn't have enough time to commit the incantations and hand positions to memory."[8] Finn seems to speak Latin (as evident in "Morituri Te Salutamus,") although this may be caused by the magical powers of Fight King's arena. In "Daddy's Little Monster," for the first time, he becomes an antagonist by wearing the Nightosphere amulet, although it is only temporary. In "The Tower" Finn gains a new mental arm with the ability to interact with the physical world. His emotions seem to cause this, along with the ability of telekinesis. Since it was linked with his emotions, it exploded into a huge arm of spikes when he confronted his "dad," and disappeared when Finn's animosity abated. In "Flute Spell" he was granted permanent immunity to electricity by the Forest Spirit.
Age[]
Finn is twelve years old at the start of the series and progressively grows older relative to the passing of time in real life.[9] Finn is shown going through puberty throughout the series. This is seen whenever he screams as his voice cracks. Additionally, Finn's voice becomes noticeably deeper at age fourteen than it was at thirteen as a result of his voice actor aging. Episodes with early production codes have Finn with a very childlike voice such as "The Enchiridion!," "Prisoners of Love," "Evicted!" and "Ricardio the Heart Guy."
As of "Mystery Train" (broadcasted on March 14, 2011), he is thirteen years old.
In an interview in early 2012 (at the end of Season Three), Pendleton Ward stated that Finn was fourteen.
According to Adam Muto, Finn was confirmed to be fifteen years old in the second half of Season Five.
In "The Comet," he is revealed to be sixteen years old.
Finally, in "Seventeen," he turns seventeen years old.
In "Obsidian," he has become an adult man. His age is currently unknown, but it can be speculated that he's only a few years older, possibly in his 20s as he is slightly taller, has grown a beard, and his hair color has slightly darkened becoming a dirty blonde from a golden/yellow blonde.
In Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake, it is revealed that the series takes place 12 years after the end of the original series finale, meaning that Finn would be 29 years old at this time.
By the time period of "Together Again", many decades after the main series, Finn has become an elderly man with a long white beard. At this age, Finn dies presumably of old age, and he transcends into the 37th Dead World.
Relationships[]
- Main article: Finn's relationships
Finn has a close relationship with his adoptive older brother Jake the Dog, an anthropomorphic dog with the ability to change shape. At the time of the series, Finn and Jake live together in a treehouse. Their relationship is at times strained by the differences in their maturity and outlook on life. Jake often finds himself frustrated by Finn's childish antics and infatuations with various princesses. Finn's life revolves around adventuring and fighting monsters, while Jake likes to pursue more varied interests. After Jake ends up in a relationship with Lady Rainicorn and has five children with her, his focus shifts towards being a father. This creates distance between them, but they remain close friends and Finn enjoys being an uncle.
Finn is also friends with BMO (pronounced Beemo), a sentient handheld game console who is Finn and Jake's roommate. Finn creates the robot Neptr (Never Ending Pie Throwing Robot) as part of a prank, but NEPTR soon becomes a friend to him. Finn ends up developing a close friendship with Marceline the Vampire Queen (Olivia Olson), despite her initial role as an antagonist.
Finn is shown to have an unrequited love for Princess Bubblegum throughout much of the series. He and Jake frequently have to rescue Princess Bubblegum from the obsessive Ice King. Finn's past life as Shoko, an orphaned thief who befriends and then betrays Princess Bubblegum, influences his present-day infatuation with Bubblegum. Finn's friendship with Bubblegum becomes more distant as the series progresses.
Finn begins dating Flame Princess (Jessica DiCicco) in the third-season finale "Incendium", after realizing that Princess Bubblegum is too old to be compatible with him. Although Flame Princess' fiery nature makes their relationship difficult, they try to make it work. Finn and Flame Princess eventually break up. Finn's relationships with both Princess Bubblegum and Flame Princess cause him to have to deal with rejection and reconciliation, and he emotionally matures as a result.
Finn has a complex relationship with his biological father, Martin Mertens, who is shown to be a scoundrel. In season six, Martin reveals to Finn that he was forced to abandon him as an infant after reaching a crossroads too dangerous for an infant and that he always meant to return for him. Adam Muto said that they did not want Finn to be a "carbon copy" of Martin since he had an adoptive father in Joshua. Muto said they wanted to "embrace the idea of Martin being as rogueish [sic] and dishonorable as Finn is heroic".
The season six episode "Breezy" deals with Finn's depression after losing his arm, being disappointed by his father, and breaking up with Flame Princess. Finn makes out with various princesses in an attempt to feel something positive but is left emotionally unfulfilled. During the episode, he explores a complicated relationship with a honeybee named Breezy, who falls in love with a flower sprouting from where his arm was cut off.
Both Finn and his mother Minerva are shown to be selfless and dedicated to helping others. However, Minerva is fearful and overprotective due to the losses she has experienced, in contrast with Finn's adventurousness. Upon reuniting with Finn in the miniseries Islands, she is both alarmed by his dangerous lifestyle and proud that he devotes his life to helping others. She attempts to trap Finn on the island so that he will be out of harm's way. After convincing her to release him, Finn leaves her behind and returns to Ooo, though the separation causes him grief. Various critics have interpreted the portrayal of Finn and Minerva's opposing views as a commentary on the repression of emotions, overreliance on technology, the sacrifice of freedom in exchange for safety, an exploration of Nietzschean philosophy, and an allegory for "American self-absorption."
Reception[]
Finn the Human's character arc has been highlighted by critics for its honest realistic portrayal of adolescence and universal struggles associated with coming-of-age. Brandon Zachary of Comic Book Resources described Adventure Time as "one of the most expansive fantasy series in modern history, centering around a kind but unassuming boy growing into a noble young man." Writing for Vox, Emily VanDerWerff called the series "this era's finest coming-of-age story", mentioning how Finn grew "from boy to almost-man, an adolescent who's slowly figuring out how to be both a good friend and a good person." Oliver Sava of The A.V. Club praised the episode "Breezy" for its relatable depiction of Finn's developing sexuality and his search for emotional fulfillment.
Finn's story arc as the last remaining human — and his eventual discovery of other humans — has been praised by critics. Zach Blumenfeld of Paste contrasted Finn's rootless and heroic existence to the passionless, technology-dependent lives of the other human survivors in Islands. Blumenfeld considered Finn to be an example of Friedrich Nietzsche's hypothetical Übermensch.
[Finn] affirms life as it happens (both the good and the bad), constantly creates a value system and exists completely unfettered by society or the past. [...] He's grown up without the weight of human history and custom, has guided his own way through a flood of adolescent emotions and has become a hero in a dangerous land of his own free will. His moral code, once crafted in the image of his idol, Billy, is now of his own making.
The character also became extremely popular among Adventure Time's fanbase. In 2019, Rich Goldstein of The Daily Beast commented on Finn's popularity among cosplayers, saying "Halloween nights and comic conventions of the last few years have seen an increase in the number of children (and adults) all over the U.S. who wore Finn and Jake costumes." John DiMaggio recalled "walking around at conventions and seeing everybody wearing their Finn costumes and their Jake costumes and how the characters endeared themselves to people". A float in Finn's likeness was included in the 2013 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Finn's narrative and impact on younger audiences has been compared to that of Harry Potter, the titular character in J. K. Rowling's book series of the same name. In particular, both characters were aged up as the series progressed, with Darren Franich of Entertainment Weekly saying that Finn "[aged] with his audience like last decade's Harry Potter kids."
Various Forms[]
Past Lives[]
Name | Image | Description |
---|---|---|
Catalyst Comet |
As the first past life that Finn witnessed during his trance, he saw himself as a blue comet. This was later revealed to be a Catalyst Comet.[10] it is likely that, given the nature of the catalyst comet, Finn is a reincarnation of the essence of pure good, to counter the Lich’s pure evil. | |
Butterfly |
The second past incarnation that Finn saw in the episode was his past life as a butterfly. He appears to have had blue wings with purple spots. This is again in "Come Along With Me", when he and Fern are battling each other in their dream state. Finn also briefly assumes this form in "Together Again" after Mr. Fox tells him he can look like any past version of himself. | |
Pink Interdimensional Creature |
The next incarnation that Finn saw before being cut off by Jake was a Giant, Pink, and glowing glob. It is unknown exactly what this creature is, though Finn describes it as a "doo-doo in another dimension". It bears some resemblance to the Mother Gum. He briefly assumes this form in "Together Again" after Mr. Fox tells Finn that he can look like any past version of himself. | |
Gunther | Main article: Gunther
Although he is not properly recognized as an alternate version of Finn, he has as a companion a little dog (Nina) who can be associated with a reincarnation of Jake because of her color and face, and the title card of this episode mirrors the last part of Adventure Time's introduction, with Gunther taking the place of Finn and Nina taking the place of Jake. Gunther is a wizard, formerly a dinosaur, who appeared in the episode "Evergreen." He is Urgence Evergreen's apprentice, and one of the few characters known to exist before the Mushroom War. He became a wizard after wearing Evergreen's wish-granting magic crown in an attempt to stop a Catalyst Comet from striking Earth, but would fail due to his actual wish being to be like Evergreen, thus corrupting the crown into an artifact that would curse future wearers. | |
Shoko |

Shermy | Main article: Shermy
Shermy is a character who exists in the future and is close friends with Beth. Shermy debuted in "Come Along With Me." He and Beth appear to live in Marceline's house, where they have a collection of ancient artifacts. |

Older/Pillow world |
In the episode "Puhoy", Finn travels to a realm full of pillows which he cannot escape, and eventually starts a new life, becoming an adult and elder. Elder Finn loses his right arm and replaces it with a prosthetic limb that is seemingly made of quilting material. | |
Older/Dungeon Train |
In the episode "Dungeon Train", Finn observes a possible future scenario where he doesn't leave the Dungeon Train, and keeps fighting the train's denizens. Finn is initially content with this outcome, until he sees that Jake stayed with him all those years, trying in vain to get Finn to leave with him. | |
Finn Plants | Main article: We're Plants
"We're Plants" is a duet Finn and Jake perform in the episode "Food Chain." It features Finn and Jake as two flowers singing about how days move faster from a plants perspective due to them moving slowly. Half way through, they are being eaten by caterpillars and crying for help. They are happy when two birds arrive to eat the caterpillars. | |
Weirdo Finn | Main article: Weirdo Finn
Weirdo Finn is an alternate version of Finn the Human. He resides in the Grotto World, which can only be accessed via a whirlpool in The Grotto of the Water Nymphs. He lives in a regular tree with Weirdo Jake. | |
Flynn | Main article: Flynn (Fionna's Genderswap)
Flynn (also referred to as Flynn The Human Being) is a fictional character created by the Ice Queen as a gender-swapped version of Fionna. Flynn is not mentioned outside of the fan fiction made by the Ice Queen, which in itself is a fan fiction made by the Ice King about Fionna and Cake, the gender parallels of Finn and Jake. Flynn is also seen with Jacques the Raccoon. | |
Fionna Campbell | Main article: Fionna
Fionna Campbell, also known as Fionna the Human, is the main protagonist of Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake, and was previously an in-universe fictional character and the gender-swapped version of Finn who were part of part a fanfiction the Ice King supposedly made from a strange red glowing inspiration during his sleep. She and the other gender-swapped characters would occasionally appear in their own segment of the show. Ice King had fantasized about one day making her real and marrying her. In Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake, it was revealed that Fionna and Cake along with their world are real all along. They were actually created by Prismo who at some point became interested in creating his own reality rather than making ones based on others wishes. Since Prismo was not allowed to create his own realities, he hid Fionna and Cake's outside the multiverse and inside the mind of Ice King which led to him creating his fanfiction about it. However, when Ice King was reverted back to Simon Petrikov by GOLB and lost his magic, Fionna and Cake's reality lost magic as well and became a non-magical one. As a part of this, Fionna became an ordinary working human with Cake as her non-magic pet cat. 12 years later, due to a botched magic ritual caused by a depressed Simon, she and Cake were unintentionally brought to his universe and their universe's origin was revealed to them. She went on a quest through the multiverse with Cake and Simon, while also being hunted by God Auditor Scarab; after her return and her universe became authorized, she accepts her life better. | |
Baby Finn | Main article: Baby Finn
At the end of the episode The Winter King, this version of Finn is seen in an alternate universe known as Baby World. In the next episode The Star, Fionna turns her backpack upside down, resulting in Baby Finn falling out. She says that he must have crawled in during naptime. At the end of the episode, Baby Finn is left alone in Vampire World with Peppermint Tank. In the series finale 'Cheers', Baby Finn is sent to Fionna-world by Prismo along with Jay, Little Destiny, Peppermint Tank, and The Squirrel. |
Disguises and Forms[]
Name | Image | Description |
---|---|---|
Lute Suit |
In the episode "Go With Me," Finn is shown wearing a "lute suit" provided by his friend, Jake, in his attempt to convince Princess Bubblegum to go to the movies with him. It is also shown later in the episode when he tries to get Marceline to go to the movies with him. | |
Magic Fist |
Magic Fist is the alter-ego of Finn and Jake that first appears in "Wizard Battle". He is not a real wizard; he only enters the Wizard Battle to prevent Princess Bubblegum from potentially having to kiss the Ice King on the lips as the prize for winning the battle. He wears a blue eye mask, an electric-green hood, and a large red robe. Finn is the head, while Jake is the body. See the gallery section for more images. | |
Cat Finn |
Finn is transformed into a cat by the Grand Master Wizard when Finn forfeits the Wizard Battle; however, Finn was able to break out of it after becoming enraged by Abracadaniel's decision to take the kiss from Princess Bubblegum. | |
Prince Hotbod |
In "The Creeps," Finn wears a black tuxedo with a blue-trimmed collar that has a split tail end. He also has a matching blue bow tie, a gray vest, a brown and tan fox mask over his characteristic hat, and brown "fancy gloves." | |
Giant foot Finn |
In the episode "Freak City," Finn is turned into a foot by Magic Man who poses as a beggar. As a foot, Finn has great difficulty moving at first, and only musters the effort to make himself fall over. Finn is upset at his physical handicap while Jake tries to make him realize that being a foot is a blessing. Finn is unconvinced and later becomes motivated to return to his original body after discovering that Magic Man has turned many others into body parts as well. After working with the other victims, Finn seemingly defeats Magic Man as the Super Freak. Magic Man restores Finn and the rest of the freaks to their original bodies. | |
Zombie Finn |
Zombie Finn looks like Finn, and apparently appears in "Slumber Party Panic." Zombie Finn appears in the bottom left corner of the first window to be broken when the zombies break the barricades. Zombie Finn of appears in the Adventure Time game, Rhythm Heroes. In the game, Finn appears as a zombie just like in "Slumber Party Panic." He seems to be controlled by Marceline in the game, and he is next to two other zombies, a cupcake and a candy heart. He was most likely added as a joke or Easter egg. | |
Lumpy Finn |
In the episode "Trouble in Lumpy Space," Finn turns into a Lumpy Space person after giving the antidote to Jake so that he can return back to his normal body.
By doing this, he turns into a Lumpy Space person as well. Lumpy Finn hates Lumpy Jake. | |
Demonic Finn |
In "Daddy's Little Monster," Finn puts on the Nightosphere amulet to rescue Jake and Marceline from the Nightosphere. This causes him to transform into a huge, monstrous, demonic form similar to Hunson Abadeer. Afterward, he tries to pull Jake and Marceline back into the world but stops after Hunson reverts Finn back into his original form. | |
Paper Plate Demon Finn |
In "Daddy's Little Monster," Finn disguises himself as a demon in order to sneak into the Nightosphere. He puts on his red pajamas, cuts a paper plate and puts it on his face, and tapes forks to his hat. | |
Hug Wolf Finn |
In the episode "Hug Wolf," Finn is hugged by the Alpha Hug Wolf on a full moon, causing him to transform into a Hug Wolf during the night. When he is in this form, he must go on a hugging spree to fulfill his hug lust. However, in the morning, he does not recall anything he did in the night before. As a Hug Wolf, Finn has shaggy gray fur, heart-shaped hands and feet, and, due to increased musculature and overall size, wears torn clothing. He is much faster and strong than his human form, while mentally he is almost completely overcome by his powerful urges to hug. He is cured when he hugs the Alpha Hug Wolf which cures her as well. | |
Jake's shadow |
In the episode "Princess Cookie," Finn dresses in a black bodysuit and pretends to be Jake's shadow in order to get into the grocery store and take out the Chocolate Chips. | |
Prince Finn of the Grasslands |
Although not directly used by Finn, in the episode "Incendium", Jake introduces himself as 'Baron of the Grasslands' to Flame King and calls Finn 'Prince Finn'. | |
Davey |
In the titular episode, Finn disguises himself as "Davey" in an attempt to hide from his followers. Davey eventually evolves into his own character, possibly hinting that Finn temporarily develops a dissociative identity. However, later it's revealed that Finn was just acting. Davey is also seen in issue 60 of the Adventure Time comic showing that he was a possible previous reincarnation of Finn. | |
Finn Sword |
Main article: Finn Sword
The Finn Sword is created in "Is That You?" after Finn sacrifices an alternate version of himself to save Prismo. After visiting a much more elaborate version of Prismo's Time Room, created as a "Plan B," Finn makes a choice to save Prismo by creating a paradox that vaporizes his dream world duplicate. Instead of turning to dust, Finn's body turns into a sword, dubbed the Finn Sword by Prismo. Later to become cursed by Grassy Wizard's parasite, and becomes Fern, Finn's Alter-ego. | |
Arm occurrence |
During the first five seasons, every alternate-reality, past-life, dream, and future version of Finn—with the exception of Fionna—is shown to have no right arm or have an artificial right arm. These would include Shoko, Farmworld Finn, and the older Finns in "Mortal Folly", "Puhoy", and "Dungeon Train".
Finn does lose his arm in the episode "Escape from the Citadel," leaving just a flower from the Grass Sword. In "Breezy," it regrows from the Grass Sword's flower into a fully normal-looking arm, only with a thorn coming out from the middle of his palm; this was effectively the dormant physical form of the Grass Sword. In "I Am a Sword," while Finn is fighting with Bandit Princess who is using his stolen Finn Sword, the Grass sword comes out to aid him but is accidentally thrust into the hilt of the Finn Sword, shattering the crystal which contains the alternate Finn and breaking off the end of Grass Sword in it. In "Reboot," Finn tries to prevent the Grass Sword from attacking Susan but accidentally causes it to merge with the Finn Sword and create a Grass Person, leaving Finn without a right arm once again. As of "Two Swords," Finn has a metal arm, just like the alternate versions of him. In "Three Buckets," it is revealed that this arm can transform into many different weapons. Finn loses his metal arm in the series finale "Come Along With Me," leaving him once more with just a nub where his right arm was. In "Obsidian" an adult version of Finn is seen from a few years after the end of the series, and he is seen without any prosthesis. The comics add to his future versions and alternate futures. In Issue 25 they expand the linear future stuff. | |
Fly Finn |
In the episode "Ghost Fly", the Ghost Fly takes over Finn's body and turns him into a human-fly hybrid. | |
Bread Finn |
After being turned into an egg by Magic Man in the episode "You Forgot Your Floaties," Finn falls into a bowl of flour where he was then accidentally baked into bread by Betty Grof. Finn breaks out of the oven and stumbles onto Jake who had previously been transformed into soup by Magic Man. Finn then proceeds to smash Magic Man's transmutation apparatus which disrupts Magic Man's transmutation with Glob's helmet. | |
Hermit Eyes Forms |
In the episode "Don't Look", Finn acquired a pair of magic eyes that allowed him to turn people into how he saw them. At the end of the episode, after feeling bad about himself, he turned himself into a giant red monster. At the end of the episode, everyone that he changed helped him to turn back into his original form, becoming various different versions of himself that people saw him as before finally returning to normal. | |

Trivia[]
- Finn's name was derived either from Old Norse "Finnr", which means "Sami" or "Finnish person", or from Irish "Fionn", which means "fair-headed", "white", or "blond".
- Finn being referred to by others as "Finn the Human" parodies how characters in fictional works with only one name are often referred to fully by both their name and their species (e.g. Jake the Dog).
- In the Cartoon Network Live-Action Promo "What Time Is It?" Finn is portrayed by Christopher Kramme.
- In Legends of Ooo, it is seen that Finn has a telescope that he uses to spy on Princess Bubblegum and Flame Princess.
- Finn is technically still the King of the Goblins; the goblins believe his scapegoat, Whisper Dan, to be him.
- Finn has a female counterpart: Fionna. She was previously thought to be fictional in Ice King's fan fictions, but in Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake, she, Cake and everyone else in Fionna-world was revealed to be real all along. Fionna shares the same last name as his biological mother, Minerva Campbell.
- One of Finn's catchphrases is being "all about" something. In "Freak City," Finn says he is "frickin' all about sugar." Yet, he also explains that he is even more "all about feeding hobos." In "The Real You," Finn shouts, "I'm all about stupid!" In "Gumbaldia", he claims that he "used to be all about violence."
- In "Dad's Dungeon," it is revealed that Finn cries rarely; only in devastating situations, such as death or heartbreak (or when he poops as revealed by Jake in Memories of Boom Boom Mountain).
- Finn and Jake frequently use math terms as catchphrases and at times censors for curse words. However, they are shown to be terrible at math, as confirmed in the episode "Slumber Party Panic." (Examples of these words include mathematical, rhombus, algebraic and math). This was utilized less frequently as the show progressed, though it still occasionally appeared.
- Finn's favorites have been stated throughout the series.
- Finn's favorite color is baby blue "boy style," as revealed in "The Silent King."
- Finn's favorite food is meatloaf, as stated in "Still," later confirmed in "Jake Suit," and then again referenced to in "Three Buckets."
- Finn's supposed favorite song sounds like an alternative version of "Itsy Bitsy Spider."
- Finn also states that "he hasn't liked this song since he was two." This may be a way of trying to escape the mockery of the spirits around him, or Jake may genuinely not know Finn's current favorite song.
- Finn is, to at least some extent, red-green colorblind, as revealed in "Red Starved."
- When Finn is wearing his doctor suit in "His Hero," he has three Scientific Parasites in his pockets.
- In "Jake vs. Me-Mow," Finn carries his adoptive mother's music box in his pack and knows her lullaby by heart.
- "Bad Little Boy," "The Prince Who Wanted Everything," "Princess Day," "Evergreen," "The Diary," "Friends Forever," "Be Sweet," "Orgalorg," "Varmints," "Cherry Cream Soda," "Broke His Crown," "Lady Rainicorn of the Crystal Dimension," "Five Short Tables," "Daddy-Daughter Card Wars," and "Ring of Fire" are the only episodes where Finn did not make an appearance.
- In the early version of "Daddy-Daughter Card Wars," he was initially going to appear at the beginning of the episode, but this was likely cut for time in the final version.[11]
- Stormo is a creation partially made from Finn's DNA from the episode "Goliad."
- Flame Princess is Finn's first and former girlfriend. Jake referred to Princess Bubblegum as Finn's ex-girlfriend in "In Your Footsteps," but Finn replied that they "never went steady."
- Despite this, Finn refers to Flame Princess as his girlfriend for the first time in "Puhoy."
- It appears that Finn is the only character so far who ages consistently.
- At the beginning of the series, Finn's voice is more high pitched, but later near the latest episodes, Finn's voice is a bit deeper from puberty.
- There is a secret GPS implanted on Finn's ear by Princess Bubblegum, as stated in "Lady & Peebles."
- Besides Tree Trunks' pies, Finn also likes Wildberry Princess's meat pies.
- Finn likes to make lists to remember things, like in "The Real You" and "Five Short Graybles."
- In "Dungeon Train," Jake says Finn is about 5' tall.
- Finn may have some driving experience. In "Candy Streets," Finn drives Jake after he turns into a car. (This may only be true if Jake wasn't controlling himself.)
- According to The Adventure Time Encyclopædia, Finn got his name from Joshua and Margaret as they initially believed that he was a Mudfish as they knew very little about humans.
- This contradicts with "Min and Marty," where he is revealed to already have the name 'Finn' before being separated from his parents. In the same episode, it is shown that when Finn drifts alone in the raft, there is also a stuffed bear having his name tag on it along with him.
- In "The Red Throne," Finn says that he has been learning a bit of piano.
- In "Lemonhope Part 1," it is shown that Finn has been taking classes at a school run by Princess Bubblegum, one of his classes being geometry.
- In "Dentist," it is revealed that he actually knows his full name given at birth, which is "Finn Mertens," not counting his alternate universe self in "Finn the Human." It is possible he was intended to have learned this from Martin, as in "The Visitor" he refers to himself as Martin Mertens. "The Visitor" aired after "Dentist," but has an earlier production code.
- His Demonic Form is most likely a reference to Slenderman.
- In the episode "The Vault," it's revealed that one of Finn's past lives was a comet. This could have some connection to the Catalyst Comet. This was confirmed in "The Comet," as the Catalyst Comet was, in fact, one of Finn's past lives.
- In all of Finn's alternate variants, he eventually gets his right arm removed.
- Finn has begun to grow facial hair, but BMO plucks it out every morning as shown in "All's Well That Rats Swell."
- In an Adventure Time comic, Jake questioned how Finn puts random things in his backpack, one thing is a pack of pens. This may be a reference to Finn's original name.
- Finn's last name is a Dutch variant of the name Martin, which means 'warrior'.
- Finn's hat has a similarity to the hats Helpers wear, as seen on his mother Minerva's head.
- Finn's birthmark looks like a flaming sideways teardrop located in a really weird part of his body, as described by Finn in "Crossover."
- The description fits his past life as a comet.
- Finn can do the splits as shown in "Imaginary Resources."
- In "Beautopia" and "Sad Face," he drinks coffee.
Cultural References[]
- Finn McCool was an adventurer and hero of Irish mythology. "Finn" is the Anglicized version of "Fionn", meaning "blonde".
Production Notes[]
- In the original short, Finn was named "Pen."
- In Issue 9, it is revealed that Finn had been called "Pen" in the original short because of his love for pens. Although originally, he was most likely named after the creator of Adventure Time, Pendleton Ward. A future Finn then takes his red sleeping bag when he and Jake leave to help Lady Rainicorn, also leaving a note of advice telling Finn to use his real name. This, however, is most likely non-canon.
- In the pilot, Finn is voiced by Zack Shada. However, in the series, he is voiced by Zack's younger brother, Jeremy Shada.
- Jeremy Shada can make Finn's voice crack when asked during episode recording to better represent his youth and growth.
- In the original storyboard of "The Lich," it is revealed that Finn's father was unlawfully imprisoned years ago in the Crystal Citadel, which houses the most dangerous criminals from other dimensions. This does not appear in the final product; Finn's father's existence is not revealed until "Billy's Bucket List" and is not seen until "Escape from the Citadel."
