We are a member-based non-profit organization formed in 1986. In other words, we are a bunch of enthusiastic volunteers.
We promote awareness of the ecological benefits of native plants and native plant communities through:
- Our annual Michigan Native Plant Conference, which brings hundreds of attendees together to hear top keynote speakers, attend multiple breakout sessions, and network with other like-minded, friendly souls on relevant and timely topics in the native plant movement.
- Our WAM Grant program distributes thousands of dollars to non-profits and schools each year to develop and enhance native plant gardens, involving the next generation in spreading the word that “planting native matters.”
- Our social media outreach, which touches untold numbers with the message that native plants are essential to a healthy ecosystem.
- Our members support our mission, serving as resources and advocates for the importance of Michigan native plants. You can become a member here.
Why Native?
Native plants are the foundation of the food web on which all life depends. (Yes, humans, too.)

For the web of life to continue to thrive, native plants must be preserved. |

A landscape planted with alien plants is essentially a food desert to our native species. |

American landscapes have shifted from forest and prairie to cities and subdivisions. |
