Côme Savagnac

Landscape Architect

Côme studied Horticulture and Landscape Design in Paris, then specialised in Garden History at Versailles and Panthéon-Sorbonne. Whilst studying and after graduating, he worked for Michel Pena and David Besson-Girard studio on a mix of public and private projects. In 2018 he moved to the UK to pursue his passion for gardening, working as a gardener at Gravetye Manor. Mentored by head gardener Tom Coward, he gained experience in garden management and daily maintenance throughout the seasons. He then joined Gillespies in London, where he worked as a Landscape Architect on a range of commercial and public projects, from a new linear park in London to a civic square in Hong Kong. Côme joined Tom Stuart-Smith Ltd in June 2022.

Honor Reekie

Landscape Architect

Honor studied Fine Art Painting BA at City & Guilds of London Art School before going on to study Landscape Architecture MLA at Edinburgh University. At art school she made work about how people perceive landscapes and then wanted to learn the more practical design side. For five years, she supported the director at SNAP – Art at Aldeburgh Festival. Honor joined Tom Stuart-Smith Ltd in 2019 and finds the remedial affect landscape can have particularly fascinating alongside her interest in forest gardens and rewilding projects. She has recently spent time working as a gardener at By the Crossways in Suffolk, gaining hands-on horticultural experience.

Yaniv Korman

Heritage Landscape Manager

Yaniv's upbringing amidst the meadows and olive groves of the Ayalon Valley cultivated a deep interest in storytelling, permaculture, and ethnobotany. During his undergraduate studies at the College of the Atlantic, Yaniv restored the Sunken Garden, a journey that propelled him toward a master's degree at Cornell University. Under the guidance of Professor Kathryn Gleason, he learned to uncover forgotten horticultural practices and discover buried gardens. Post-graduation, he applied his expertise as an ancient garden researcher, collaborating with archaeologists to study and reconstruct gardens spanning various periods and locations. Before moving to the UK, Yaniv worked in Maine as a stone mason tender, gardener, historical garden researcher, and designer for landscape architect Dennis Bracale. He also gained experience working on public projects at various scales with Urbanof and Sack & Reicer in Tel Aviv, and with Deborah Nevins and Starr Whitehouse in NYC. Yaniv joined Tom Stuart-Smith in 2023.

Kurosh Davis

Director

Kurosh read Horticulture at Bath University. While studying he worked for the landscape architects Brown & Rowe and the Olin Partnership USA. He then completed a degree in music at the Musikhochschule Detmold in Germany and studied at the Royal Academy of Music. After a period as a professional Viola player, he continued his education at the University of Central England and qualified as a Chartered Landscape Architect. Before joining the company he worked as a landscape architect at Elizabeth Banks Associates for two years. Kurosh is also a portrait painter - kuroshdavis.co.uk, and continues to perform as a viola player in chamber groups around Europe. Kurosh has worked with Tom Stuart-Smith for over twenty years, of which he spent twelve years as an Associate running projects in the UK and internationally. Kurosh was appointed Technical Director of Tom Stuart-Smith Ltd in the autumn of 2018.

Frank Wu

Associate

Frank studied Architecture at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. After graduating, he worked as an assistant architect for Emirates Neon Group in Shanghai. Frank's research interests are in geometry and experimenting with new drawing software. In March 2009 he joined Tom Stuart-Smith Ltd where he is involved in detailed design and production drawings, and leads the office in computer landscape visualisations.

Kate Saldanha

Kate joined Tom Stuart-Smith Ltd in 2021, having achieved a Masters of Landscape Architecture, First Class Honours with Distinction, and prior to this a Master of Arts in History of Art, First Class Honours, both from the University of Edinburgh. She is interested in new methods of sustainable design in the landscape profession and wilding. Her graduating project, Intelligent Wilderness, explored this at length, looking at the potential for using a wilding strategy in conjunction with sensitive design interventions, modern technology and natural and renewable construction materials, all to create a quality of climate resilience within the landscape. Since graduating, her project has been recognised with the European Council for Landscape Architecture Students (ECLAS) Award and the Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape (ESALA) Postgraduate Prize for Contextual Studies.

Alice Desbois

External Consultant - France

Alice studied landscape design at the École Nationale Supérieure de Paysage in Versailles, France. During her degree she was mentored by the landscape designer Michel Pena, for whom she also worked as an intern. She completed a summer internship at Tom Stuart-Smith Ltd in 2013 before working as a full-time member of the team for two years. In April 2016, Alice moved back to the south of France to set up her own practice and continues to work on a freelance basis for Tom Stuart-Smith Ltd.

Emily Assheton

Associate

Emily joined Tom Stuart-Smith Ltd in 2016. She is a Chartered Landscape Architect (CMLI) and graduated from the University of Edinburgh with an MSc in Landscape Architecture in 2015, during University she spent her professional placement year at Tom Stuart-Smith Ltd and as a gardener at Coton Manor Gardens, Northamptonshire. Before joining TSS Emily previously worked at Townshend Landscape Architects, where she worked on the Kings Cross development and a range of urban and public realm projects. Emily also sings with the Bach Choir and volunteers in local community projects in Hackney.

Tom Stuart-Smith

Tom Stuart-Smith is a landscape architect whose work combines naturalism with modernity and built forms with romantic planting. He read Zoology at the University of Cambridge before completing a postgraduate degree in Landscape Design. Tom has since designed gardens, parks and landscapes throughout the world.

Recent projects in the public domain include several projects at Chatsworth, a new public garden at the Hepworth Wakefield, and the masterplan for RHS Garden Bridgewater, which is one of the largest new garden projects in Europe. 2021 saw the completion of a new Islamic garden, Jellicoe Gardens in Kings Cross, commissioned by the Aga Khan Development Network and Argent, and 2022 will see the dramatic recasting of a garden by St Pauls Cathedral in the City of London which has a 100m² water basin at its centre, reflecting Sir Christopher Wren’s famous dome. Current projects include a new garden at Knepp that seeks to maximise biodiversity, and a castle on Loch Ness in Scotland.

Previous projects have included Her Majesty the Queen's Jubilee Garden at Windsor Castle, Trentham Gardens in Staffordshire, the Bicentenary Glasshouse Garden at RHS Garden Wisley and the Keeper’s House Garden at the Royal Academy of Arts.

International projects include Le Jardin Secret in the heart of the medina in Marrakech, a garden located on the waterways near Kottayam in Kerala, and show gardens for the international horticulture exhibition at IGA Berlin 2017 and the international garden expo Beijing 2019.

He has also designed eight award winning gardens for the Chelsea Flower Show, all of which were presented with gold medals and three ‘Best in Show’.

Tom regularly gives talks and lectures, and continues to write occasionally for the Guardian, Financial Times and Daily Telegraph, amongst others. An exhibition on his work, the first about a living garden designer in the UK, was held at the Garden Museum in 2011.

Tom is a Vice President of the Royal Horticultural Society, a Trustee of the Garden Museum, an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects, a Fellow of the Landscape Institute, and a Fellow of the Society of Garden Designers.

In May 2021, Thames & Hudson published a critical monograph of his work, written by Tim Richardson, which features twenty-four gardens from around the world.

Throughout his career Tom has also developed his own family garden at home in Hertfordshire, which is open to visitors each summer, by appointment.

Olivia Hellman

Landscape Architect

Olivia joined Tom Stuart-Smith in 2023. She is a registered Architect (ARB) and studied at the University of Sheffield for both her Undergraduate and Master’s on the dual Architecture and Landscape course, gaining accreditation in both design disciplines. Graduating with Distinction, her final thesis project concerning urban rewilding was nominated by the University for an RIBA Silver Medal and she received the Kenneth H Murta Prize for exceptional design performance. Personal research interests have led her to focus on the reclamation and remediation of vacant spaces and challenging perceptions of landscape aesthetics. Before joining Tom Stuart-Smith, Olivia worked as an Architect at Hollaway Studio in London.

Millie Souter

Horticulturalist and Designer

Millie originally studied Fine Art, painting and drawing at Falmouth College of Arts, followed by Garden Design at Inchbald School of Design where she was awarded the Garden Design School Prize on graduation. She has been gardening professionally most of her life and ran her own business for six years. In 2018 Millie designed an Urban Regeneration Garden for the RHS Flower Show Cardiff, for which she was awarded a Gold Medal and Best in Show. Her love for working outside and being with plants is fuelled by the positive influence her work has on the environment and the opportunity it provides to never stop learning – something she believes is good for the mind, body and soul. She joined Tom Stuart-Smith Ltd in 2021 and uses her diverse range of skills to divide her time between gardening and design-related work.

Nick Pusterla

Director

Nick trained as a landscape architect at the Haute École du paysage, d'ingénierie et d'architecture (HEPIA) of Geneva before moving to the UK in 2013. He first worked for a couple of years at Charlotte Rowe Garden Design where he mainly concentrated on private town gardens. In 2015 Nick joined Arne Maynard’s practice to follow his passion for European and English country garden design and planting. Here he worked for three years gaining experience in managing the design and construction of gardens of various sizes and typology. Nick joined Tom Stuart-Smith Ltd in October 2017.

Zoë Morris

Landscape Designer

Zoë joined Tom Stuart-Smith in 2022. She graduated from KLC School of Design with a Diploma in Garden Design with Distinction and was awarded the top prize for planting design. Before joining TSS, Zoë worked at Bradley-Hole Schoenaich Landscapes where she worked on a variety of private gardens and larger public schemes. She also gained experience volunteering at The Orchard - Serge Hill Project for Gardening, Creativity and Health, and has assisted during the planting of several show gardens at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Zoë is driven by her passion for horticulture and is interested in the restorative and transformative effect that gardens can have on wellbeing. Before retraining as a landscape designer, she enjoyed a 10-year legal career as a solicitor, specialising in defamation and privacy law at several top city firms.

Shankar Kothapuram

Senior Associate

Shankar qualified as an architect from Measi Academy of Architecture, Anna University, India and completed an M.Arch in Architecture and Urbanism from the Architectural Association, London. After graduating, Shankar worked for Srinath Advani and Zaha Hadid Architects. He joined Tom Stuart-Smith Ltd in 2012, working on public spaces, country gardens, small and large city gardens. Shankar is a Chartered Landscape Architect (CMLI). Shankar’s other interests lie in urban and social manifestations of digital design whilst working closely with traditional craftsmen and materials - sk-id.com.

James Trevers

Associate

James studied Geography at the University of Exeter before going onto a Masters in Landscape Architecture at Edinburgh University. Upon graduating in 2016, he was awarded the Scottish Landscape Institute Best Student Award and UK Landscape Institute Student Dissertation prizes. Since then, James has spent time teaching on a part-time basis at the University of Edinburgh whilst working for rankinfraser Landscape Architecture LLP, before moving to London and working with architectural practice John McAslan + Partners. In this time, James has worked on a range of project uses and scales, from small coastal parks in Scotland to a new concert hall for Moscow. A particular interest in the perception and experience of landscapes and the approach of landscape phenomenology inform his work. James joined Tom Stuart-Smith Ltd in 2021 and is a Chartered Landscape Architect (CMLI).

Matteo Codacci-Pisanelli

Mattis Köpe

Landscape Architect

Mattis trained as a Landscape Architect at the University of Geisenheim in Germany before moving to the UK to complete his Master’s at the University of Greenwich. He gained experience in habitat-based planting design during his studies with Cassian Schmidt at Hermannshof, a botanical trial garden in Weinheim, and has continued to expand his personal interest and passion for working with plants ever since.

During his studies he worked for the landscape architect firm Fabrik on commercial and public projects. Mattis is currently on the pathway to chartership program to become a Chartered Landscape Architect. Mattis joined Tom Stuart-Smith in 2021.

Max Harriman

Landscape Architect

Max graduated from the University of Manchester with a BSc in Plant Biology in 2014. Whilst studying he spent a year working at the National Institute of Agricultural Botany in Cambridge, where he partook in research focusing on agricultural genetics and floral form. He then attended the London College of Garden Design and was awarded the external examiner’s prize for his final project in 2017. On completion of his Diploma he worked for Bowles & Wyer where he worked on a range of high end residential and commercial projects. Max entered the Young Garden Designer of the Year competition in 2018 at the RHS Tatton Park Flower Show and was awarded a Silver-Gilt medal for his show garden ‘A Calm in Chaos’. He joined Tom Stuart-Smith Ltd in February 2019.

Ed Shackleton

Director

Ed joined Tom Stuart-Smith in 2015. He is a Chartered Landscape Architect (CMLI) and graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a degree in English Literature and History of Art. He spent four years as an Associate at TSS and was project lead on a wide range of projects in in the UK and abroad. Alongside this Ed co-ordinated plant procurement across all projects and travelled widely to European nurseries. In May 2022 he was appointed Director of Horticulture.
