Moving on from the labour disruption

On October 7, McGill, AMPL, the Association of McGill Professors of Education, and the Association of McGill Professors of the Faculty of Arts announced they had reached an agreement to a new path forward for negotiating university-wide working conditions for their member professors, officially ending the strike by AMPL.

We thank students and colleagues for their continued patience as academic and administrative activities resume.

Course FAQ

How will the Fall semester unfold? Are there any changes to the academic calendar?

  • The Fall semester will end as scheduled. As usual, no classes will take place during the Fall Reading Break. As usual, only 1L courses and Focus Week workshops will take place during Focus Week.
  • All classes that were suspended during the strike resumed at their scheduled times as of October 3 at the latest. This document (last updated 2 October) provided initial guidelines on the resumption of academic activities impacted by the strike.
  • Make-up classes are not expected for courses suspended during the strike. Professors will offer readings that students can complete independently or asynchronous activities to make up for missed class time.

Is there any change to Fall Reading Break?

  • There will be no classes during Fall Reading Break (October 15-18). As students are eager to push ahead with their learning, though, instructors will offer them some readings that they can do independently, or some other kind of asynchronous activity.
  • The week will also serve as a “pedagogical period” during which time the Student Affairs Office will organize for exam rereads, supplemental exams, and exam viewing.

Is there any change to Focus Week, October 21-25?

  • Focus Week workshops will run as planned.
  • As usual, 1L courses will run during Focus Week, while 2L, 3L, and 4L courses will pause.
  • The “pedagogical period” for supplemental exams and exam viewing will continue.

Will the Fall Term be extended?

  • No. Fall courses will end on December 4, as planned, and be followed by the usual exam period.
  • The grade submission deadline will remain in early January and Fall grades will be released in mid-January.

When is the “Add/Drop” period for courses affected by the strike? How can I add the Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory option to a suspended course?

  • The Office of the Provost and Executive Vice-President (Academic) and the Office of the University Registrar and Executive Director of Enrolment Services have worked closely with us to allow an exceptional "Add/Drop" period. Please read this policy carefully for important information about the revised "Add/Drop" process and applicable deadlines: PDF icon Law Fall 2024 Exceptional Add/Drop Policy
  • The exceptional “Add/Drop” period began on October 3 and the period for requesting changes will run until October 9, 2024 at 11:59 p.m. Changes can only be applied manually by Student Affairs Office staff; students cannot add/drop courses themselves on Minerva. Please use the Fall 2024 Exceptional Add/Drop Course Change Form to submit your changes and/or to add the S/U option to a course. It may take up to two weeks to complete these changes.
  • Manually changing courses for every student at the law faculty is an extraordinarily time-consuming activity, so we ask you to only submit changes that you are certain you want to make.

What happens to supervised term essays?

  • Students writing term essays supervised by AMPL members can now reach them via their McGill email addresses. Fall term essays must be approved by professors by October 10.

Will students who plan on completing their degree this fall be able to graduate as planned?

  • Yes. Students who meet the program’s requirements will be able to graduate as planned.
