Coinciding with the centennial of Frank’s birth, the exhibition will explore his restless experimentation across mediums including photography, film, and books, as well as his dialogues with other artists and his communities. It will include some 200 works made over 60 years until the artist’s death in 2019, many drawn from MoMA’s extensive collection, as well as materials that have never before been exhibited.

  • I’m a thousand different people–Every one is real

2024-03-15 – 2025-01-05 · New York, United States of America
I’m a thousand different people–Every one is real

Taking its title from a drawing by artist and queer icon Candy Darling, this exhibition brings together a selection of works recently acquired by the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art. Darling’s words evoke the multidimensionality of queer and trans life and artistic practices that insist on defining art and life entirely on one’s own terms. Taken together, the exhibited works–across various media and representational styles–embrace a spectral, prismatic approach to rendering LGBTQIA+ existence. Both contemporary and historical, the works elide the demand for authenticity and easy legibility, instead holding space for plurality, reinvention, and fantasy.

Binia Bill – Images and Fragments

Binia Bill (1904–1988) turned to photography with ambition and confidence. After training as a concert cellist, she attended the photography class given by Lucia Moholy at Berlin’s Itten School in 1930 and worked as a freelance photographer when back in Zurich. In 1931, she married the architect and artist Max Bill. To earn a living, the couple worked together on advertising commissions, for which she produced the images while he designed the typography and layout. In the years that followed, Binia Bill created a remarkable photographic oeuvre: Her portraits and still lifes are characterised by a clear visual language that is related to the aesthetics of the ‘Neues Sehen’ movement. Binia Bill’s interest in perspectives and surfaces, in playing with light and shadow, was combined with a very distinct sensitivity though, which influenced her view of objects, plants, animals and people.
