Ladderback chairmaking is a 200-year-old practice passed down through generations in the mountainous Appalachian region of the United States but has slowly declined over time due to the mechanization of furniture making. Author Andrew D. Glenn set out to uncover whether any Appalachian ladderback chairmakers still existed, taking to the mountains of Tennessee, West Virginia, Kentucky and North Carolina with a camera and voice recorder in hand.

In this book, he profiles more than 20 furniture makers who continue making traditional ladderback chairs, mostly by hand. He shares insight into the history of the Appalachian ladderback chair along with the lives and techniques of the makers working to preserve this long-held tradition.

With the knowledge he gained during his travels to the region, Glenn also shows you how to make your own post-and-rung side chair and rocking chair using the techniques described throughout the book.
