Bahrain are all set to take part in the Asia Rugby Emirates Sevens Trophy 2024 in Kathmandu, Nepal.
The competition takes place today and tomorrow at Dashrath Stadium in the Nepali capital.
The kingdom’s representatives are one of 14 men’s national teams taking part in the event. They have been drawn in Group B for the preliminary round alongside Uzbekistan and hosts Nepal.
Group A features the Philippines, Pakistan, and Jordan; Group C is composed of Kazakhstan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Sri Lanka; and Group D comprises Afghanistan, India, Bangladesh, and Chinese Taipei.
The top two nations at the end of today’s preliminaries move on to the knockouts tomorrow.
Bahrain open their campaign against home side Nepal, and then take on the Uzbeks in their second assignment.
The delegation that travelled to Nepal includes Bahrain Rugby Federation director of rugby Rory Drummond, sevens coach Ross Preedy, and head of medical Dr Amy Bowzaylo.
“Once again we are extremely excited by the challenge ahead,” Drummond told the GDN last night from Nepal. “We have the opportunity to compete against 13 of the top countries in Asia, in a hope of bringing back silverware.
“To be able to represent the Kingdom of Bahrain at an international level once again is truly an honour. Everyone involved is relishing this opportunity to make the country proud.”
The squad that will be flying the kingdom’s flag in the competition is captained by Deina Morete. Adam Wallace is the vice-caption, while the rest of the team includes Aled Morris, Alastair Crombie, Lindsey Gibson, Fiachra Wynne, Talal Al Sharif, David Evans, Greg Heath, and Jack Phillips, along with debutants Matthew Richards and Cole Crawford.
“The squad has been working hard with the aim of once again competing with the very best in Asia,” said Drummond. “A four-week training camp has seen our newly qualified players join the established squad and the energy brought by them has added a lot to the already experienced group.”
The Asia Rugby Emirates Sevens Trophy also features a women’s tournament, with teams from Guam, India, Indonesia, Iran, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Uzbekistan, and hosts Nepal competing.
