TWO film screenings, a children’s theatre production and a slew of exciting workshops have been lined up this week as part of the Bahrain Summer Festival.
In collaboration with the US Embassy, the Missoula Children’s Theatre presents The Wiz of the West, the classic story of The Wizard of Oz, but with a twist.
Follow Tinhorn, Lionel, Scared Crow, Dotty and her little dog Mooch through a saga of Western adventure and personal discovery this evening at 5pm.
The free event will take place at the Cultural Hall in Manama.
Two films will be screened on Sunday in collaboration with the Japanese Embassy at Bahrain National Museum auditorium.
5 Centimetres per Second is a romantic drama animated film written and directed by Makoto Shinkai. It consists of three segments, each following a period in Takaki Tōno’s life and his relationships with the people around him.
Between Us, which follows at 7pm, tells the story of Tamaki Matsuzawa, a privileged girl from a wealthy family, who faces a life-altering situation when her father’s company goes bankrupt. Feeling isolated and without a place to turn to, she discovers solace in the sound of her classmate Maria Niijima playing the taiko drums. Together, they navigate the challenges of life, finding comfort and connection through their shared struggles and the power of music.
On Saturday, a sunflower workshop will teach participants the basics of creating sunflower-inspired artwork, led by artist Shaima Murad. It will go on from 10am to noon and is open to those aged nine to 15 at the Art Centre in Manama.
A cycling and kayaking adventure has been organised tomorrow and Saturday in collaboration with Kashta Tours. The journey begins from the Qal’at al Bahrain site, followed by cycling through the picturesque farms nearby as well as the neighbouring Nurana Islands. Participants will then embark on a kayaking expedition to explore traditional fisheries and immerse themselves in the stunning surroundings to discover hidden gems in the kingdom. The event begins at 5pm on both days.
On Monday, a Style of Van Gogh workshop takes place at the Art Centre from 10am until noon. Children aged between nine and 15 will paint Van Gogh’s famous artwork The Starry Night on a hat using the same technique.
A Young Authors: Creative Comic Story Writing Workshop takes place on Wednesday at 4pm. Open to those aged eight to 15, the free workshop aims to develop the skill of writing a comic story and identifying the essential elements of a short story. It also hopes to enhance the creative and imaginative abilities of children.
During the event, participants will learn how to think creatively using the visual elements provided, be guided in forming sentences for each section and learn to create a coherent story.
The workshop will be presented by lecturer and researcher Eman Al Balooshi at Al Khalefeya Library and has been specialised for the hearing impaired.
