Flickr Ate My Baby
This is one of three photos, viewed thousands of times, that was removed by Flickr without any warning before, or any notification after.
Poof! went the photo, and Poof! went the accompanying data, including comments, and a review I wrote that I foolishly failed to back up (oh! How utterly stupid of me to think my original work would be safe!).
Given that Flickr, wonderful Flickr, has been built up around a philosophy of trust and an implicit knowledge that users feel attachment to, and ownership of, their accounts, I'm saddened that my friend has acted this way.
The reason for removal was a "Notice of Infringement", no doubt from an over-protective, but essentially heavy-handed, law-abusing individual. Just for the record, the copyright of this photo is 100% my own, and *no* laws, contractual or otherwise, were broken.
I have been informed that these photos, and the accompanying data, cannot be un-deleted. Maybe it's about time to implement some kind of temporary removal during arbitration system. Maybe it was about time some time ago.
