Old Light v New Light

I took a winter night drive to Flamborough on the Yorkshire Coast in January 2010 with the intention of taking a few star trail shots and in particular the constellation of Orion which fascinates me for some reason.

The temperature was about -4C so I didn't hang about for more than a couple of hours. Here is one of the few I got that were half decent.

I've tried images like this before but the bright lights of Sheffield, Rotherham and Doncaster ruin the skies where I live and also any attempt at photos like this. The dark skies out here enabled me to easily capture Orion and the nebula in the sky above Flamborough Lighthouse at my first attempt. This photo was taken using a Canon EOS 500D, 18mm lens and a tripod.
