Approaching Rain, detail, oil on canvas, studio painting from plein air sketches, Vivien Blackburn Organising an exhibition as a group: This will depend on the type of group - I belong to large organisations who have committees, members voted in, who arrange and hang the shows. These may be juried and have a limit on the number of paintings that can be shown. This group is a small group of friends, who meet up once a month. We are all graduates/post graduates and critique each others work, talk about or arrange visits to exhibitions and put on shows of our own work from time to time. Being small it's essential that everyone helps out with the organisation in our group and that ground rules are arranged in advance. Venue: For this show I came up with the venue but asked 2 other members to check it out and book it, to make sure that we would all be happy with it. The price was right, the space was just big enough. We were able to book it for a time that suited us, aimed at t

some of my contributions to the Flying Pictures Project Remember our Flying Pictures Project , sketchbook exchange? Lindsay has just shown an exhibition, in the US, of our completed books (sent off on a wing and a prayer for safe return) and given a talk. She sent us the printout of her words and we would all have loved to have been there - she summed it up beautifully and got across how much fun it had been, the underlying worry of each of us working in books containing such gorgeous work by the others, how we learned from each other, enjoyed discussions on our blog and privately. the buzz - and that we want to do another project together. Lindsay has shown her contributions on her blog - as it was such a good idea, I thought I'd do the same :>) Have you taken part in an exchange?

7 members of The Association of Leicestershire Artists showing at Burton Library Gallery - hold mouse over slide show to see name of artist over their work - my work is at the end of the show - and no that person next to my long thin canvas isn't me! The show is up. Several times a year our little group put on shows at non-gallery spaces - like village halls or libraries. Burton library has a good gallery space and this is the first time we've shown there. You have to be juried in. The space isn't huge, so the work is closer together than we'd hang in a gallery. We are all exhausted now. The images aren't great quality as they were snipped from a Flip video - I haven't learned how to upload videos yet (it's on loan from college, not mine) and you'd get a little seasick if I did! note to self: go slower and remember not to include shots of the carpet. Anyone in the Burton on Trent area please go to see it and let me know what you think. we are all v

David Poxon - Made in England Following the review I did of the Watercolour Exhibition at the Mall Galleries, David Poxon emailed me: Hi Vivien- I always read your blog! Thanks for the nice mention- it is much appreciated. Attached is my pic Made In England in this years RI - please put it on your blog if you like. Size is 27" x37"- pure watercolour of course! With the current state of the nation it seemed like an apt title! My website is www.davidpoxon.co.uk if you would like to post a link . Many thanks- heres hoping I get in the 2010 expo! best wishes david This was an absolutely amazing painting and his website is well worth browsing - I particularly like the rusty hinges and padlocks and decrepit wooden doors - something I've always found strangely beautiful. Thank you David for the picture and permission - and for reading! I wouldn't think there would be any problem getting into the 2010 exhibition! Browse and enjoy everyone :>)

Azurete copyright Vivien Blackburn These are the pictures from the Society exhibition - it's quite a big show at the Art Gallery and Museum in town. Members can put in 3 paintings. Mine are the the one above, which is tiny - about 5 inches square. I framed it in a white Ikea box frame with a white mount - it went really well with the blues. Azurete (should have an accent on the last e) is French for the blues. Link to the website: http://www.leicestersocietyofartists.co.uk/index.php Some of the paintings were quite bold and mine seemed to be surrounded by them! The trees in the middle is mine. About 3ft 6in tall on gallery wrap canvas. and again, I'm on the wall with the bright colours! the seascape in the middle is mine. It's about 4ft tall, oil on gallery wrap canvas - my husband and father made me the stretchers for the long canvasses and I put the canvas on. I thought I had until the weekend to get my work ready for the next show - The Pastel Society ...... no, I'd
