Tanzania
President Samia Suluhu Hassan became Tanzaniaâs first female president in March 19, 2021 and despite some measures to improve the countryâs human rights record, the police continued to commit abuses with impunity and target critics of the government. Supporters and members of the countryâs main opposition party have been subject to arbitrary arrest as Tanzania prepares for local elections in 2024 and general elections in 2025. Ongoing conservation and tourism activities in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) violate the rights of the Maasai people. The Maasai are being forcibly relocated from their ancestral lands in the NCA without the Indigenous communityâs free, prior, and informed consent.
