The Museum is closed on University holidays (external link) and often stays open late for public events.
Admission
Admission is free, but we suggest a donation of $3 to support Museum programming and initiatives.

Information Desk
Our information desk staff is happy to answer any of your questions or provide recommendations.

Dining
Food and beverages are allowed in limited areas, but there are over a dozen restaurants within a block or two. Ask at the information desk if you need help deciding! There are also several outdoor picnic tables near the entrance.

Lockers & Cloak Room
A cloakroom is available for hanging coats and umbrellas.
Backpacks and other large bags may be stored in our coin-return lockers or locked cabinets.

Stools & Benches
Benches are located throughout the Museum. Folding stools with carrying straps are available to borrow for free while visiting. Just ask at the information desk.

Restrooms & Water Fountains
Restrooms are located on the Museum’s 1st floor. Each restroom has a baby-changing station. Water fountains are near these restrooms.
Gender-neutral single restrooms are available on the basement level.

Wi-Fi
Visitors can connect to IllinoisNet, IllinoisNet_Guest, or Eduroam, the primary wireless networks on campus. Technology Services has more information about connecting to Wi-Fi (external link).
Accessibility
All public areas are accessible to visitors in wheelchairs or strollers, though seating is limited in the Knight Auditorium. A complimentary wheelchair is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Assisted listening devices are available in the Knight Auditorium. Parking spaces for visitors with handicapped parking permits are available in the adjacent lot.
To request additional accommodations, please contact our information desk at (217) 333-2360. With advance notice, arrangements can be made for sign language tours, and touchable objects can be loaned from the Educational Resource Center. Early requests are appreciated to allow sufficient time to meet your access needs. The University also maintains ADA floor plans of the building (external link).
Visitor Guidelines
Please:
- eat any food in the lobby or Central Core,
- drink only clear liquids in the galleries,
- take pictures without flash or a tripod,
- touch exhibits only where signs say you can, and
- book a visit in advance if you are a group of 10 or more people.
We encourage you to:
- scan gallery QR codes for artifact information and media,
- borrow a clipboard if you want to write or draw,
- ask about gallery-based activities, and
- use our portable stools or wheelchairs.
Children must be accompanied by an adult. You may be photographed or recorded by Museum staff for security, promotion, reporting, or other internal purposes.
