Sisters, Anne Adams and Liz Johnson are the creative engine behind Sew4Home. They believe anyone can and should sew for the sheer love of it. Their mission is to promote sewing and educate visitors on the value of working with the proper tools and materials, and demonstrate how quality makes the sewing experience faster and easier, and produces finished results that are more polished and professional-looking.

Since launching in early 2009, S4H has attracted a rapidly increasing group of devoted readers and makers of their step-by-step projects, techniques, tips, and tricks. The site features today’s easy-to-use sewing machines, beautiful and readily available fabrics, plus news about clever notions and tools. The sisters know how to spot the best trends and to develop them into must-make projects for their followers.

The S4H team is an experienced group with long ties to the sewing and design industry. Thanks for sharing some of your creative time with us; we’re glad you’re here.

Team

Liz McKinney-Johnson, Editor

After spending decades in the marketing world, promoting a variety of high profile sewing and craft products, Liz decided to switch her emphasis to expanding the universe of people who should be interested in those products. From helping young people discover sewing to rekindling the interest of lapsed sewers to providing passionate enthusiasts with new and exciting projects – it’s all about igniting inspiration. Liz makes sure the instructions and articles on S4H are detailed, easy to follow at any skill level, and simply enjoyable to read. As a published novelist, Liz cares deeply about the quality of her work. The highest compliment she can receive is for a S4H visitor to write in to say, “I didn’t think I could do this, but thanks to you, I could and I did and I love it!” When she’s not brainstorming and writing and editing, Liz loves spending time with her family and friends in the gorgeous Pacific Northwest, and she admits Portland, Oregon is indeed as weird and wonderful as everyone thinks it is! For these bios, you’re always supposed to add one unusual thing about the person, so how about this: Liz worked her way through college as a singing telegram messenger!

Anne Adams, Creative Director

Anne stands out for her lightweight sewing background prior to S4H. After receiving a degree in commercial design, she went on to lead the marketing and communications group for a Fortune 500 environmental consulting firm where she remained for nearly two decades. She then moved on to become the SVP Marketing at a startup in the telecommunications field. After the startup was acquired, she began putting her skills to work designing home goods. Having a broad interest in design, she became intrigued with designing sewing projects that were both trendy and professional looking, yet not overly complicated to sew — success is a great motivator. Anne’s favorite projects are bags and aprons. When not in front of the computer, she enjoys living a short walk from a forest with all its critters who visit her yard — delightful if not a bit scary when cougars come a calling. Always an animal lover, she has two indoor kitties who are constant companions. Her unusual skill: photographic memory of childhood years — mentally mapped every item in the house, everyone’s clothing, every Christmas and birthday gift, where the teabags were kept. Will that ever be useful?

Debbie Guild, Seamstress Team

Debbie has lent her wonderful sewing skills to the S4H team since almost the very beginning of the site’s development. Having sewn since she was just five years old, she’s tackled everything from roman shades to romantic wedding gowns. The sewing and craft world is even responsible for her marriage; she met her husband while working at Fabric Land! On the site, her favorite samples to create are the aprons. In those rare moments when she’s not sewing, Debbie loves to travel the world with her husband and spend time with her four children in rural Damascus, Oregon. She lives in a home she and her youngest son built 12 years ago, which is, “a little bit of heaven when everyone is home and the sun is shining!”

Michele Mishler, Seamstress Team

Michele gets the sewing-the-longest award, having started her love affair with it when she was just three years old and fascinated by watching her own mother bring together little pieces of fabric into a finished garment. Michele’s wizardry is behind all the amazing machine embroidery designs you find on the S4H site and in our Etsy shop. Her skill, imagination, and perfectionist spirit is incredible. You can tell she loves it. “I was hooked the first time I saw a machine running all by itself and creating exquisite little embroideries!”  Michele lives in Junction City, Oregon, and when she’s not creating, her main goal is trying to keep up with her very active five-year-old great grandson.

Kathy Andrews, Seamstress Team

Kathy definitely wins the “coolest early jobs” category. She spent her early years in the Ice Capades! In fact, her skating was what prompted her to learn to sew at age 12 when she needed to create her own skating costumes. But wait, it kind of gets even cooler because she also spent 30 years sewing the huge and impressive components that go into theater and event productions. If you need someone who can envision making something 30’ tall in three dimensions and likely with a continuous zipper of some sort, Kathy is your gal. How did S4H land her talent? Kathy explains, “I love working on S4H projects – especially the bags; it’s a pleasure to make something small and pretty and useful!”

Leah Wand, Seamstress Team

Her sewing “career” began with baby doll clothes… until her mom let her in on the secret that sewing clothes for herself would actually be easier. Leah is very busy in the non-sewing areas of her life. She, her husband, and their two teenage boys recently moved to St Louis, Missouri where Leah is a stem cell transplant and surgical oncology ICU nurse. She is also triathlete, having accomplished several half-Ironman events and currently training for her first full Ironman in 2020! Leah brings this same bottomless energy and enthusiasm to S4H, where she loves creating bag projects. Leah is always up for a new challenge, “I have learned and grown myself as a seamstress working with S4H, doing things I had never done before and being amazed by the professional results.”

Jodi Kelly, Seamstress Team

Jodi and Liz were work colleagues and friends for many years even before S4H’s 2009 debut, so Jodi was an obvious choice as a Seamstress Team member. A bit of a “late bloomer” to the industry, she received her first sewing machine as a wedding present in 1995. She easily made up for any lost time with an incredible level of innate skill and boundless creativity. Jodi is a sewing machine educator by trade, and truly believes in the power of detailed instructions, which is what she has always loved about S4H. Some of Jodi’s original technique articles are still our most popular. A proud native of New Jersey; distance, as well as work and family obligations keep Jodi’s S4H participation at a minimum. But she will always be an important part of the S4H family.

Pattern and Project Alteration Requests

We’re sorry, but we are unable to create revisions to our patterns or projects for size or usage variations. It’s a challenge to change dimensions long-distance, especially without access to the item and/or person for whom the project is being adjusted. We would feel awful if we gave you inaccurate advice that caused your finished project to turn out less than successful.

Our standard recommendation is to measure your item and/or person and compare those measurements to our original dimensions. Do the math to make adjustments and scale the original dimensions up or down. Then use these new measurements to make a prototype out of a muslin or another inexpensive fabric you have on hand. This is often the exact way we determine our own patterns and instructions. It is not only a good way to re-engineer a project, making a prototype is also a great way to do a practice run-through of the steps of construction.
