Yes ! REAPER can do video editing too !!

You can make vlogs, podcasts, tutorials, lyric videos and more…

…But out of the box it’s a bit tough, like assembling Swedish furniture without a wrench or instructions.

REAPERBLOG Video Tools is the essential pack of tools for making videos in REAPER, plus the knowledge to use them creatively and effectively.
This video course is hosted by Jon Tidey of The REAPER Blog who has now made hundreds of videos in many styles using REAPER 5 exclusively for editing.

These presets significantly improve editing workflow and provide many functions not included with REAPER’s presets, such as basic video cropping, colored text with drop shadow, guide lines, borders and more.

I highly recommend this course. The video processor presets are incredibly useful and worth the price alone. The training course is informative and thorough. If you’re making videos with Reaper and looking at this web page just pull the trigger, this is GREAT!

Hello there – excellent course and VERY helpful custom presets, thank you, thank you. One questions – am I missing the section about rendering? I’m looking for more information because I cannot seem to render in MP4 format, even with ffmpeg and vlc properly installed.

Thanks for all your work on this course, it’s excellent.

      Hi Jonathan
I guess you are on Windows. Having the right version of FFMPEG 64bit shared in the userplugins folder should allow you to render and h.264 mp4, though I think a lot of users export lossless then use Handbrake to convert.

On mac I choose AVFoundation encoder, MPEG-4 video streaming optimized. 8000kbps for 1080p

You may think something as simple as video cropping should be built into REAPER. You may be right. But these presets go well beyond the basics, they’re well worth what he’s charging, and they work! I made this with REAPER thanks to Jon’s hard work. https://youtu.be/IXMtVc6vgF0

Hey Will. I’ve got a new preset coming to the course soon that will make those kinds of videos even easier. No cropping of each video, it just automatically makes a grid with adjustable border thickness and background Image/video in the border area or empty area.

      1. Aaron Grooves Avatar

Hi Jon, is that automatic grid preset already out and included with the course? Sounds like a good investment. I’ve been using Davinci Resolve (premiere before then), but it would be much more efficient to do some of these simple grid videos within Reaper, where I’m already mixing audio from multiple student videos. Thanks!

The one I was alluding to ended up getting put into a reaper update while I was creating my own version. Grid of Videos preset in the video processor. My version was never released.

Thanks for the quick response! I played around a bit, but ended up going back to Resolve; I need to learn a bit more before I can really benefit from video editing in Reaper. Just purchased your course. Thanks a ton!

two questions: 1st – how many tracks with video-processor plugins in Rreaper are possible? A special wish would be controlling more then 2 parameters from several video-fx in the same track…

2nd – exists any choice to control video parameters from audio material (sidechaining, FFT-analysis, marked freq-bands, rhythm beats etc. (btw. I need these for comosing audio and video mat. together solutions like resolume are known but that’s not the target)

thanks for hints and kind regards

    Hey Jon,
    Hey everyboby,

I followed this course one year ago (during the first european lockdown), and it was just great thanks a lot. I used it many times, but for the first time I have to deal with 2 cams. It’s a simple set but I noticed something I have some trouble with. I put my two video files on two different track and switch them. I also apply the brightness and color corrections on each track. And because cams are not at the same place, corrections are different. But the corrections I put on the first track affect the second one ! like if every video signal pass through all the video processor (following the order if importance). I found solutions to solve this but they are not great. Like bypass the video processor of the more important track during the playing the the “other tracks” items. I took too much time. I could find a way to automatize everything but is there a way, or an option, to do it simply ?
    Thanks again for your work.

Hi Jon, is it possible to sync several videos and audio files in Reaper with an action or a preset you have made? In Premiere it’s possible to load in takes from the same scene (multi cam) for example an iPhone, iPad, video camera, lav mic etc and run an action, and boom everything is synchronized. No need to manually line up takes etc. is that possible in Reaper and is that something you explain in your course? Thanks!

      Hi Dag
No automatic way to do that. I do a clap sync and line up the first frame of clap with the sound.
If you have the same sound on each source it can be as simple as pressing TAB to go the first transient, setting snap offset to that point (or trimming left of cursor). Then snapping all to the start of project, marker or wherever.

Hi John, I’ve been going down the video editing rabbit hole and running into various problems. I just want to do something really simple – edit video from phone and synchronize to audio from H4N.
I have Reaper 5.11 and 4g of ram, is reaper video viable for me? Does it make sense to purchase an more recent version of reaper? Thanks! Catherine

Hi Catherine. 4GB of RAM is potentially an issue.
5.11 is from 2016. I would update to 5.99, there are a lot of video features in those updates between.

Is there a way to use metadata from the project/track/file render as variables? (eg., a title card for exports, or lyrics (or other midi events) to subtitles, or …)

For text generators you can use the item take name, or track name to autofill the text. That’s it though

Hey John, REALLY enjoyed the course and tools, incredible job!!

Had a question regarding still images – When I import images into a timeline that has video, the resolution seems to go wild, and everything goes weird and blurry. Seems as if the video track under the images is also affected by the resolution changes.

Is there a way you suggest that I use for overlaying still images on video?
    Thanks!!

    1. Admin Avatar

I’m usually using the “Image Overlay” preset if there is transparency, or my “Video Controls” preset and shrink it down. I don’t recall any recent issues with this.

Feel free to email me with some screenshots to show the problem.

    Hello there

I am working with different aspect ratios in the film . The source film which is a old film has : 768 x 576 aspects.
I have set this in project settings, I have a AI enerated 4k film ie. it has 5120 x 1536 . How Do I make reaper automatically Letterbox so I can keep this Format and different formats in the film without them getting skewed into the prefered size for the project ? Thank you . Cant fin answer to this anywhere you see 🙂

Hey I solved it in handbrake . I just chose a normal aspect ratio and higtened the quality of the aI conversion .
There was just a half day of intens headscratvhing so thats why I reached out haha

I’m on lesson 7 I took another video of me playing my guitar. These lessons are awesome. I’ve been using my own guitar videos. When I loaded up my next video new song into reaper I’m upside down. I don’t see any rotating controls so far. I remember now this happened to me before and I was able to rotate the video but don’t remember where that dial is at
