Our Story
Mennonite Community Church (MCC) was founded in 1954 by a number of Mennonites in the Fresno area who had migrated from other Mennonite communities. First Mennonite Church of Reedley, CA, provided special support in this endeavor. Within a few years a thriving church community had been established. For the next 50+ years, MCC has been providing love and support at the corner of Willow and Olive. Mennonite Community Church is affiliated with the Mennonite Church USA and remains committed to biblical principles and Mennonite distinctives of the faith.
Mennonites trace their roots back to the Reformation of the 1520's in Europe. Along with the Lutherans and Presbyterians, our ancestors, the Anabaptists, were major movers in church reform. Because Anabaptists taught believer's baptism, nonresistance to war and separation of church and state, they were heavily persecuted by all parties. Consequently, many migrated to Russia, North and South America, and Canada in search of religious freedom. Mennonites received their name from Menno Simons, a sixteenth century Dutch Anabaptist, who led them through their formative years.
MCC membership is varied and diverse... professionals, teachers, social workers and students. There is a complete age range from babies to great grandparents. Throughout the years, members of MCC have been actively involved in restorative justice, Boys & Girls Clubs, refugees, Habitat for Humanity, peace and justice issues, and various missions projects. Every year Fresno area Anabaptist congregations sponsor a spring Mennonite Central Committee Sale for world relief on the campus of Fresno Pacific University.
MCC is an active, caring congregation that takes seriously Christ's teaching "to love the Lord your God with all your heart... and your neighbor as yourself." That leads us to work at our own spiritual nurture so that we may also reach out to others around us. In order for us to reach out we must support and care for each other in Christian community. MCC is committed to the task of being God's "hands and feet" in our community and the world.
