Introducing Indochine by Barbara Barry

Meade Design Group was a little spoiled this fall, we were able to host the launch of Barbara Barry's latest fabric collection, 'Indochine' with a private gathering of clients. We were actually the first showing in Canada so we feel very special to have been given the opportunity!

Many thanks go out to all of our guests in attendance, as well as Barbara Barry herself, who sent us a note with a lovely gift of her own brand of absolutely delicious Citrine tea. Erica Smolders from Rook & Rose did a stunning job with the Asian themed flower arrangements which set the mood perfectly. We couldn't have done it without the support from the team at Kravet Canada: Brian Donovan and Paul Smith, and of course our rep, Brenda Marks - who gave an engaging and fascinating presentation of Barbara's new line.

We took careful consideration when creating the event's ambiance: Asian-themed accessories were placed throughout the space including fans, sculptures, natural elements, catalogues, and items that Barbara cited as being inspiration for the collection. We lit candles from Barbara Barry's own line and played traditional music in the background. We also had Mrs. Barry's official video about the collection playing for guests to hear about the line from the designer herself. While there were punches of rich tones of fig and charcoal, the palette remained soft and muted so as not to stray far from the look we have all grown to know and love from Barbara Barry, it blends in perfectly with her very first books yet is still very new and unique.

There was an abundance of treats and drinks to be had, including our signature cocktail for the event 'Indochampagne'. It was so well received that we thought we should share the recipe for everyone to try at home for their next event:

INDOCHAMPAGNE

1 Cube of Sugar

3 Drops of Angostura

2 Teaspoons Barbara Barry Citrine Tea Syrup

Chilled Champagne

For Barbara Barry Citrine Tea Syrup, you will need 1/4 cup Citrine Tea by Barbara Barry; the zest and juice of 1 lemons. In a small sauce pan, combine tea leaves and lemon zest and juice with 1 cup sugar and 1 1/2 cups water; bring to a boil, let the sugar dissolve, and remove the pan from the heat. Let liquid cool; strain through a fine sieve. Use about 2 teaspoons of syrup per flute of champagne.

Everyone seemed to have a great time ogling the eye candy, mingling and coveting the gorgeous door prize - two pillows made with brand new Indochine fabric and trim. It seems like great connections were made and guests left inspired to create with Barbara Barry's new collection.

All in all, we'd say it was a great success!

Across The Border – From Kravet Canada

Kravet 001 inspired.kravet

Today we received the first issue of inspired.kravet news from our lovely rep Brenda Marks – It is a very innovative printed newspaper by International fabric company, Kravet.  To our surprise an article inside focusing on Kravet Canada mentioned lil’ ol’ me [Iván Meade] as a designer and business example working on Vancouver Island in a column by Brian Donovan, President of Kravet Canada (page 8).

This magazine will be delivered to all the design community with Kravet accounts in North America.  It is kind of cool to be in an article two pages away from a profile on Barbara Barry and all the exciting new products coming from Kravet.

If you would like to read the article about your favourite Mexican designer then check out the virtual paper form of this magazine by clicking on the link below:

The Best Geometric Fabrics

According to Wikipedia - Geometry (Greek γεωμετρία; geo = earth, metria = measure) is a part of mathematics concerned with questions of size, shape, and relative position of figures and with properties of space. The earliest recorded beginnings of geometry can be traced to ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, and the Indus Valley from around 3000 BCE.

Woman teaching geometry

The theme of symmetry
in geometry is nearly as old as the science of geometry itself. But the question that arises here is why geometric patterns read as contemporary or modern patterns. This movement was, in a sense, an amalgam of many different styles and movements of the early 20th century, including Neoclassical, Constructivism, Cubism, Modernism, Bahaus, Art Nouveau, and Futurism.

The structure of Art Deco is based on mathematical geometric shapes. It was widely considered to be an eclectic form of elegant and stylish modernism, being influenced by a variety of sources. Among them were the so-called "primitive" arts of Africa, Ancient Egypt, and Aztec Mexico, as well as machine-age or streamline
technology such as modern aviation, electric lighting, the radio, the ocean liner, and the skyscraper.

From Le Corbusier Five Points of Architecture to the innovative use of colorful geometric and classic patterns by David Hicks. Today we can appreciate the use of geometric fabrics to add a splash of modern sense to any space. Here is a recollection of some of my favorite geometric patterns in fabrics. I have to say that the pictures don't do justice to the quality of the textiles.

How to be the favorite son-in-law ?

If you are looking for that special "in" with your mother-in-law. I have just the thing for you.

A couple of years ago Brenda Marks, the island's Kravet rep brought me a fabric book from Pierre Deux. Inside the book was a fabric that I thought could be perfect for my mother-in-law. Why, you ask? My mother-in-law believes she invented the french country style, specifically the rooster motif.

I couldn't resist I had to do something with the fabric for her, and I decided to make pillows with the fabric as her Christmas present. The pillows were a hit and she loves the fact that her interior designer son-in-law made her one of a kind cushions to the envy of all her friends and family.

Well, I just discover that her bragging can now move to the next level. As I picked up the lastest issue of House Beautiful featuring the best of classic and modern fabrics, what do I see under french country (page 100)? None other but the very same Pierre Deux fabric I choose for Pat a couple of years earlier.

Here is to you Pat, I think this is the best gift I can give you (further bragging rights), not only is your fabric featured in the pages of an international magazine, but now you have been the subject of a post on the infamous Meade Design Group Blog - Have a great Birthday !

Brazil ! Brazil !

Drawing inspiration from Brazilian street life and carnival culture, this spring season design is exotic, colorful, luxurious, vibrant, energetic and definitively Brazilian in its approach. Lemon yellow, parrot green, warm wood tones, white lacquer finishes, sun, samba, jungle and tropical warmth will be everywhere.

Below you will find a collection of pieces and materials that I would recommend if you are tired of the Victoria weather and are trying to bring a little piece of Brazil to your home.

Tim-tim! Saúde! ( Portuguese for "Cheers")

An antique map of Brazil would make a great piece of art.
