"Elendilmir" was a name of the Star of Elendil, or Star of the North Kingdom, a great gemstone that seemed to burn with an inner light, mounted on a slender chain of mithril. It became a token of royalty throughout the Kingdom of Arnor, having been first crafted and presented to the High King of Gondor and Arnor, Elendil the Tall, in the Second Age. It was regarded as Arnor's Royal Gem.

History[]

The Elendilmir was lost in the Disaster of the Gladden Fields, when King Elendil's eldest son, Isildur, his sons and a force of guards were marching home after the defeat of Sauron. Only three survived, excluding Isildur; the Elendilmir was lost with him in the Gladden River. Consequently a second Elendilmir was created for Valandil, Isildur's son, by the Elves of Rivendell, still beautiful but lacking compared to the original and this gem was subsequently worn by the Kings of Arnor and Arthedain and also by Aragorn II at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields.

In Unfinished Tales it is stated that Aragorn finds the original Elendilmir in the tower of Orthanc. After Sauron's defeat, Aragorn (with the help of Gimli the Dwarf) finds a hidden door and a steel cabinet, in which they discover a small golden tube without any inscription, containing the original Elendilmir. Aragorn brought it back to Annúminas and wore it again, but only on special occasions, to risk it no harm.
