Arveleg I was the eighth King of Arthedain.
Biography[]
The beginning and the end of the Arveleg's reign were forged in battle and in war. He came to the throne in TA 1356 when his father Argeleb I went to war against the newly allied lands of Rhudaur and Angmar, and was slain. Arveleg swiftly struck back in alliance with the Men of Cardolan and drove back the invading hordes for a time. For more than fifty years, Arveleg maintained a constant guard stretching from the Weather Hills, along the Great East Road, to the lower reaches of the river Hoarwell. Due in large to the defensive prowess of the Men of Arthedain and Cardolan, Angmar was temporarily pushed back and besieged Rivendell.
It was not until TA 1409 that Angmar gathered its forces and was able to breach the frontier. Crossing the River Hoarwell, its armies marched westward and surrounded Weathertop. Arveleg and many of the defenders were slain and the watchtower was burned and razed. The surviving Dúnedain were able to save the palantír of Amon Sûl and retreated to the capital city of Fornost. After this Rhudaur was fully occupied by evil men subject to Angmar and those of Númenórean blood who still remained there were slain or fled west. Cardolan was ravaged and the kingdom destroyed.
Arveleg was one-hundred years of age when he died in TA 1409 after ruling for fifty-three years, and was succeeded by his not yet full-grown son Araphor.[2]
Etymology[]
The name Arveleg means "Mighty-king", from the Sindarin words ar(a) ("royal, noble, high") and beleg ("mighty, strong").[3][4]

Video games[]
Arveleg appears in the expansion pack of The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth II video game, The Battle for Middle-earth II: The Rise of the Witch-king where he is voiced by Cam Clarke. A notable difference between the game and books is that Arveleg survives the battle at Weathertop and escapes with the Palantír. However in the following mission, Angmar forces intercept him as he attempts to escape to Fornost. In a final effort to prevent the orb from falling into The Witch-king's hands, Arveleg shatters the orb. The resulting shock wave kills him and the Angmar forces trying to steal it.
