Diversity
The Career and Professional Development Center is strongly committed to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the Law School and legal profession.
We are proud of our diverse student body and the legal training that they receive at Duke Law and welcome organizations and employers to interact with our students about diversity and inclusion related initiatives. Information on how to do so is below. For general recruitment questions, please email Erin Biggerstaff, Director, Recruitment & Employer Relations.
We recognize that employers are working hard to implement inclusive recruiting practices. We have developed an inclusive recruiting resource, Four Dimensions of Inclusive Recruiting for Law Students, to highlight best practices which may support your organization’s on-going efforts throughout the hiring cycle.
Our students are excited to connect with employers about diversity programming and events. The CPDC encourages employers to reach out to student groups at the law school for participation in panels or for sponsorship opportunities. For student group contact information, please visit the Student Organizations website.
Duke Law students participate in many diversity-focused job fairs throughout the United States, including SEMJF, Lavender Law, and the Bay Area Diversity Career Fair. We encourage employer involvement in these programs. If you are participating in a diversity career fair and want to make sure our students are aware of the opportunity, please contact Susan Anderson.
Each year, in late-October/early-November, the CPDC hosts a networking event connecting employers with 1L diversity fellowship programs with members of our 1L class that may apply to those programs. This year the event will be held on Wednesday, November 8, from 6:00 to 8:00pm at the Law School. If your organization would like to participate in this event, please contact Jasminka Vujic to be added to the annual invitation list.
Duke Law School is committed to promoting diversity, equity and inclusion for our students, faculty, staff, alumni and global legal network. Duke University promotes an institutional commitment to diversity and inclusion, which was further elaborated on by President Vincent Price’s statement on June 17, 2020 to commemorate Juneteenth and mark the University's commitment to anti-racism. The CPDC team shares these commitments and affirms our support for equity, inclusion and anti-racism in the law school and legal profession. Our students value employers using these practices to identify top talent and build a diverse legal community.
The recruiting experience of all Duke Law students should celebrate diversity and embrace inclusion. Employers recruiting on our campus are encouraged to use inclusive recruiting practices when meeting with our students. Our policies prohibit discrimination and harassment on the basis of age, color, disability, gender, gender expression, gender identity, genetic information, national origin, race, religion, sex (including pregnancy), sexual orientation, or veteran status.
