The Garuda Clan is the clan of bird-like suras, and one of the eight sura clans. Their King is Garuda, but since he is currently incapacitated due to an effect of the Power of the Name, the throne is currently empty.
History[]
In the early stages of the universe, the Garuda clan was among the clans that aided the gods with the annihilation of the Ancient human race.[1]
After the fiendish magic incident of D0, the Garuda clan lashed back against the humans who abandoned the magic of suras. The gods seem to hold this against the clan.[2]
At some point, Garuda formed an alliance with the Gandharva and Yaksha clans, probably on Gandharva's input. In time, Garuda became best friends with the kings of those clans and also Visnu.[3][4]
In D500, the Garuda clan helped the Yaksha clan fight against the Asura clan and so they did not in any way interfere when Ananta was in danger.[5]
Garuda's three children had to be separated in order to hide the Power of the Name. These circumstances prevented them from being raised together, and each was sent to one of Garuda's friends. Maruna lived with Gandharva on Carte, Yuta by Shuri on Isholy, and Kalavinka by Visnu on Willarv.[3]
According to Ravana, Garuda was the last stand for the clan to keep its position; once he would die, it would be the end of the clan. This is the case because all the powerful nastikas between Garuda and Vinata in strength got killed throughout the course of the universe. This means that Vinata is considerably weaker compared to the second-in-command nastikas of other clans.[6]
When Garuda falls into a coma due to problems with the power of the name, the throne is effectively left empty.[7] Since Vinata was obliterated during the Cataclysm, the strongest nastika in the clan is Akasha.[8] She tries to find Garuda's children in order to wake him up [9] while simultaneously trying to find a way to bypass the rule which makes it so that the next strongest nastika must become king after the death of the previous king.[10] Many nastikas of her clan find her approach extremely radical and they do not agree with her methods.[11]
Between N16 and N23 Taraka clan suras have decimated the sura realm. The Garuda clan has been said to have been annihilated[12] and Akasha herself has stated that she is the last nastika who can fight.[13]
Characteristics[]
Garuda clan suras take the form of various species of birds. Beaks, feathers, wings and head-tails are all typical for them and their descendants.
Superior suras of the Garuda clan can change the color of the sky using their transcendental skills; for example, Maruna's skills turn the sky red,[14] and Samphati's turn the sky yellow.[15] They also have excellent vision, for which inferior Garuda suras and Halfs are hunted for their eyes.[16] Garuda clan suras are extremely quick but their regeneration speed is considerably slow compared to other clans.[17]
Politics[]
The Garuda clan seems to be on unfavorable terms with the gods, largely because of the fights that ensued following the fiendish magic incident since the Garuda clan believed humans should be punished for abandoning the magic of suras.[2]
The Garuda clan and the Ananta clan are natural enemies.[18] The Garudas also aided the Yakshas in their fight against the Asura clan.[5]
The Garuda clan is allied with the Gandharva and Yaksha clans, largely because of the friendship of their kings.[3] To date, the alliance remains, but has started to waver, since only one of the three kings remains active.[4] Nevertheless, Maruna is supported by Yaksha and Gandharva suras in the human realm.[19]
