IEEE Member and Geographic Activities (MGA) is focused on supporting and meeting the members' needs and IEEE membership recruitment and retention strategies and implementation. IEEE local geographic organizational units (Sections, Chapters, affinity groups, and Student Branches) provide unique opportunities for members to attend technical presentations, create strong peer-to-peer connections, and participate in leadership opportunities that can make a positive distinction in IEEE members' jobs and careers.

The IEEE Member and Geographic Activities Board (MGA Board) is responsible to the IEEE Board of Directors, has oversight of IEEE geographic organizational units, and is responsible for IEEE membership and member development.

For detailed information regarding IEEE Member and Geographic Activities (MGA) governance, policies, geographic unit operations, and committee reporting structure, please refer to the IEEE Member and Geographic Activities Operations Manual (PDF, 1 MB).

Find a Section, Chapter, or affinity group

Members of IEEE automatically become members of their local IEEE Section, allowing them to share technical, professional, and personal interests with others in the worldwide member community of IEEE.

A Chapter shall be a technical subunit of a Region, one or more Sections, or a Geographic Council. There may be single Society Chapters, Joint Society Chapters, and Technical Council Chapters. Society Chapters are your local link to the valuable resources available from IEEE and its 38 technical Societies. Chapter activities may include guest speakers, workshops, and seminars, as well as social functions. Chapters provide Society members with valuable opportunities to network at a local level - enabling both personal and professional growth.

An affinity group is the non-technical subunit of one or more IEEE Sections. The following types of affinity groups are active within IEEE:

Wherever you live, there's a good chance there is an IEEE meeting near you. View the IEEE Regional World Map and follow the links to learn more about your Region and IEEE geographic unit (Section, Chapter, and affinity group) activities within your Region.

Geographic Unit Formations Policies and Petitions

Geographic organizational units provide unique opportunities for members to attend technical presentations, create strong peer-to-peer connections, and participate in leadership opportunities that can make a positive distinction in IEEE members' jobs and careers.

Organizational units of IEEE that can be formed by petition are Councils, Sections, Subsections, Chapters, affinity groups, Student Branches, Student Branch Chapters, and Student Branch affinity groups.

To find out more and access the Formation Petition, go to the IEEE Geographic Unit Formation Policies and Petitions.
