Question from Flambardwilliams09 (06:37, 29 January 2025)
[edit]hi, i need some guidance regarding where to begin editing in order to build a reputation as an editor.
I'd be thankful if you can help! --Flambardwilliams09 (talk) 06:37, 29 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Flambardwilliams09: Hi, you might find Help:Starting editing a useful place to begin. My advice would be to start small; you don't need to write a whole article straight away! Fix typos, add citations, and slowly build yourself up. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 19:45, 30 January 2025 (UTC)

Revision Deletion query
[edit]Hi Pickersgill-Cunliffe, apologies for bothering you, but your name is listed as an Editor who is prepared to look at Revision Deletion queries. I have today, for the first time, encountered what I think (but am not convinced) is revision deletion, on the View History page of Wormleighton Manor... Is this indeed RevDel, and if so, do you know what might have been so scurrilous in the ealy drafts of an article on a mediaeval building that we can't see anything before 2020, please? For the avoidance of doubt, on my screen, every revision prior to 23:56 17 December 2020 has its date only shown in strike-through and its compare selected revisions radio button is greyed out. Thanks. CharlesSpencer (talk) 17:36, 29 January 2025 (UTC)
- @CharlesSpencer: Hi! The content in Wormleighton Manor was revision deleted because of a long-standing copyright violation in the article (see this edit summary). Thanks, Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 00:27, 30 January 2025 (UTC)

[edit]Hi pickersgill-cunnliff, What is the easiest way to add the conservation status box to the Wiki page of a species? For instance, as my first edit I wanted to add a conservation status box to the Blue tongued skink’s page. But found the process confounding.
Does one have to know how to edit the code? I considered copying the template over from another page such as say the Ivory Billed Woodpecker’s. But found that too confusing.

Four G5 deletions
[edit]The following four images (File:Bulacan State University Student Lounge8.jpg, File:Student Lounge Bulacan State University2.jpg, File:Bulacan State University4.jpg, and File:Rancho Home of Original1.jpg) were undeleted locally by myself after having been deleted on Wikimedia Commons. They remain useful freely-licensed images which were used locally under the {{FoP-USonly}} template. I highly doubt that CSD G5 was intended for freely-licensed images which are in use and merely being back-imported from Commons. Would you mind undeleting the images and repopulating their usage? Thanks. IronGargoyle (talk) 15:49, 11 February 2025 (UTC)
- @IronGargoyle: Hi! I didn't delete any of the images based on their own merits; this was part of a much larger deletion (after the nuke failed) of files added as part of block evasion by this LTA. The deletions were the result of an discuss at AN here. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 16:03, 11 February 2025 (UTC)
- Gotcha. They are still collateral damage though. G5 doesn't apply to templates which are transcluded or categories which are populated, so it shouldn't apply to within-scope images which are in use. English Wikipedia doesn't spell that out, but that's probably because most such images are dealt with on Commons (which tellingly, doesn't have an speedy deletion policy for in-scope and freely-licensed files by banned users). IronGargoyle (talk) 16:16, 11 February 2025 (UTC)
- You didn't really address the core part of my question, which is whether you'd be willing to undelete them. I am not sure if you are caught up on G5 not mentioning files, but this seems like prime IAR territory. You do say that they weren't deleted on their own merits (and I agree). Given that, if you don't undelete them, I am inclined to re-upload them (as opposed to undeleting them). I undeleted originally because I like to preserve the English Wikipedia edit history when possible (and it's easier), but that is not necessary for license attribution requirements with a file. Re-uploading may also help the files avoid becoming CSD G5 collateral damage in the future, as they will not have the Judgefloro sock in the upload history. IronGargoyle (talk) 17:04, 12 February 2025 (UTC)

Hello, in 1979 I was the project manager for the FAA Advanced Simulation Regulations that permitted total airline training in an advanced simulator. How do I insert this into the appropriate place in the current Simulator Wikipedia document? --UAZIPPY (talk) 19:03, 13 February 2025 (UTC)
- @UAZIPPY: Hello, welcome to Wikipedia! The first thing to do is identify whether your subject is covered by reliable sources. It looks from your description like you will be using primary sources for this, which usually are not suitable for citing information on Wikipedia. If you have information that is backed up by reliable secondary sources, then you can add it to the article. You might find this page a useful place to start. Hello sir, how can I create a business profile for a brand --Daqush (talk) 19:19, 14 February 2025 (UTC)
- @Daqush: First of all, if you have a conflict of interest and are, for example, employed by that brand, I suggest you do not. Wikipedia articles are not "profile"s; each subject has to be proven notable to be covered here. If you want to write about a notable brand that you do not have a conflict of interest for, then gather reliable sources about it and create the article. [edit]Hello! :)
How can I save my edits before publishing?

- @Steffan.fischer: Hi, there is no function to save an edit as a draft as it were. I suggest making edits in small batches and publishing them to ensure nothing is lost, rather than writing everything in one chunk and losing it before publication. If you would like to work on edits outside of article space and then move them over once you are done, you can use your sandbox. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 13:15, 27 February 2025 (UTC)

Operations in the Baltic
[edit]Hi PC.
Lavery, Brian (2015). Nelson's Victory - 250 Years of War and Peace. Barnsley: Seaforth Publishing. p. 152. ISBN 978 1 84832 232 5. says that Victory was delayed in joining the Swedish Fleet at Karlskrona because she was covering transports sent to remove 12,000 Spanish troops from Langeland, Funen and other islands. I presume these are the ones under the command of el Marquis de la Romana. Clowes, William Laird (1997) [1900]. The Royal Navy, A History from the Earliest Times to 1900, Volume V. London: Chatham Publishing. p. 248. ISBN 1-86176-014-0. notes that on 19 August 1808 (which is about the right time), Saumerez, with 4 ships-of-the-line was anchored off Langeland, but doesn't say what he was doing there. Do you have any sources that further discuss Victoy's involvement in these operations? --Ykraps (talk) 16:19, 27 February 2025 (UTC)
- @Ykraps: I unfortunately don't have many good sources for the Baltic, but have dug up what I can:
- Woodman, Richard (1998). The Victory of Seapower. London: Caxton Editions. ISBN 184067 3591.
- p. 124: "The provision of protection for the Baltic trade after Tilsit made tremendous demands upon the fleet sent there in 1808...Aboard Victory, usually anchored in Vinga Sound, Vice-Admiral Saumarez was therefore preoccupied by two different, if inextricably inter-linked problems. The first was the diplomatic and strategic task of maintaining an alliance with Sweden whilst containing the Russians without unduly antagonising them. The second was the war with Denmark which was defensive, occupying his cruisers with the incessant demands of convoy protection."
- p. 125: "Saumarez had entered the Baltic originally to escort Sir John Moore's abortively dispatched army, with a fleet consisting of his flagship, Victory, 100, nine 74-gun third rates, two 64s, five frigates and a numerous and changing quantity of sloops, bomb vessels and gunbrigs, supported by subordinate rear-admirals. Moore's army having been sent home, by August 1808 Saumarez had depoloyed his ships in the Great Belt, off Langeland and Nybord, and in The Sound near Copenhagen."
- p. 126: (after the capture of Vsevolod) "Arriving off Ragersvik on the 30th to join Nauckhoff and Hood, Saumarez in Victory, with Mars, Goliath, and Africa, found Hanikov had moored his ships to the shore and fortified his anchorage with chain booms and guns on East Raga Island...although Hanikov escaped to Kronstadt before the onset of winter, there were to be no further fleet actions in the Baltic."
- Sullivan, Anthony (2017). Man of War: The Fighting Life of Admiral James Saumarez. Barnsley: Frontline. ISBN 978-1-52670-651-5.
- p. 153: "It was eventually agreed that Saumarez could have Victory as his flagship. Now over forty years old, she was still regarded as one of the finest three-deckers in the navy and was highly sought-after. Following Trafalgar the ship had undergone a lengthy refit to repair battle damage. It was also decided to take the opportunity to lighten the ship to save her ageing timbers. Her heavy oak masts and spars were removed and elm and ash replacements installed. The 24-pounders on the middle deck were replaced with lighter 18-pounders, two lower-deck 32-pounders were removed completely and the four 68-pounder carronades...were replaced by smaller 32-pounders. With her draft now reduced from twenty-one to nineteen feet Victory was well suited for operations in the Baltic."
- p. 153: "On 16 April Saumarez received his final instructions from the Admiralty. He had specific orders to prevent the passage of French troops and their supplies from the Continent into Zealand; to protect Skane (Danish territory lost to Sweden in 1660), to watch the Jutland and to prevent the passage of any French troops into Norway. He was also 'to cause the coast of Norway to be menaced by the ships which may be stationed in the Cattegat as far as is consistent with a due attention to other important objects to be provided for'."
- p. 155: "Having received his final instructions from Mulgrave, Saumarez left London for Sheerness, hoisting his flag aboard Victory on 18 March. On the 31st Saumarez's baggage was taken aboard his flagship from the gun-brig Escort and the following day she proceeded to the Nore, anchoring alongside Namur and Dictator. On 30 April Victory weighed anchor and sailed for the Baltic in company with the gun-brigs Rose and Wrangler. Held up by bad weather the ships arrived in Gothenburg on 7 May. Hood had been in the Sound with Centaur, Goliath, Vanguard, Orion, Implacable, and Dictator since early April and the arrival of Victory brought the Baltic Fleet up to seven ships of the line."
- p. 156:(After failure of Moore's negotiations) "Moore eventually escaped [Stockholm] dressed in civilian clothes and, after a journey of four days, arrived aboard Victory, at anchor in Flemish Road, on the evening of 29 June in the middle of a ball Saumarez was holding for the ladies of Gothenburg. Moore told Saumarez he intended to return home and the next morning, Victory weighed anchor and withdrew to Vinga Sound, some fourteen miles from Gothenburg."
- p. 156: "On 3 July Moore transferred to Audacious and the order was given for his ship to weight anchor and return to Yarmouth with the transports. Saumarez was somewhat relieved to see the back of Moore for ever since his arrival in the Baltic Victory had been in use as a headquarters for both army and navy, disrupting Saumarez's daily routine."
- p. 158: "Still awaiting fresh instructions from the Admiralty, Saumarez now decided to sail for the Baltic. Prior to Moore's return home Saumarez had to hold his main force at Vinga in support of Moore and had only been able to send small detachments under Hood and Keats into the Great Belt and Baltic to assist in convoy protection. But now he was free to take his fleet into the Baltic to support Swedish operations in Finland and to engage the Russian fleet if the opportunity arose. Victory and Superb weighed anchor on 5 July."
- p. 159: "Victory and Superb's progress through the Belt was held up by light and contrary winds together with the difficulty of navigating two large ships in shallow waters. On 25 July Saumarez fell in with Hood's ships off Møn."
- p. 160: "[On 31 July Saumarez] decided to return to Stockholm as Victory had on board the subsidy that had been promised to Sweden by the British government"
- p. 160: "Not long after Moore's departure from the fleet Saumarez had received despatches intended for the general asking if he could assist in the evacuation of Spanish troops from Funen. The troops, 10,000 men commanded by the Marques de la Romana, were part of Marshal Bernadotte's Hanseatic Army that had assembled in Holstein for the Invasion of Sweden...On 24 June news reached Funen that the Spanish royal family had been forced into exile by Napoleon and his brother Joseph proclaimed king. With the Spanish troops on Funen refusing to sign an oath of allegiance to their new king, Romana was now contacted by the Scottish Catholic priest and British spy James Robertson, and learned that most of the Spanish provinces were in open revolt against the French. Robertson and Romana now discussed the possibility of British ships assisting in the evacuation of the Spanish troops from Langeland, a small Danish island situated to the south-east of Funen."
- p. 161: "On 4 August Saumarez reached Karlskrona, where he visited the dockyard, met with the Swedish heads of department and dined with the captains...On 11 August Saumarez received a letter from Gustav requesting that he send all the ships of the line he could spare to participate in joint operations with the Swedish navy in the Gulf of Finland. However, Saumareaz delayed sailing to the Hanko Peninsula to await the arrival of victuallers from England that had been held up by contrary winds. Receiving a report that contact had been made with Romana's troops and that 12,000 men were waiting to return to Spain, Saumarez now decided to sail to the Belt. On 15 August, whilst en route to Funen, Saumarez received word that Keats had begun the evacuation of Romana's men, taking two Danish vessels in the process."
- p. 161: "On 18 August Victory joined Superb, Mars, Brunswick and Edgar at anchor off Funen and Romana went aboard the British flagship to meet with Saumarez. With the help of Victory's boats, by 21 August the Spanish had completed their embarkation aboard Keats's ships and a hastily assembled flotilla of sixty-odd Danish sloops."
- p. 163: (after the capture of Vsevolod) "Saumarez now sailed north with Mars, Goliath and Africa in the hope of joining Nauckhoff's fleet off Hango. On 30 August Saumarez fell in with the Swedish frigate Camilla and learned that the Russians had been pursued into Rogervick. The ships were cleared for action and around 2:00pm the Swedish fleet with Centaur and Implacable in company was seen at anchor outside the Russian port. Saumarez's ships dropped anchor and Hood and Nauckhoff came aboard Victory to give Saumarez an update of the situation...the Russians had been busily fortifying their position"
- pp. 163-164: "[On 1 September Saumarez] embarked aboard Rose with Rear Admiral Hood to reconnoitre the enemy position...Saumarez returned to Victory and later that day his flagship returned to Rogervik in company with Mars, Goliath, and the bomb vessel Thunder. Sailing close to the westernmost enemy shore Victory fired a starboard broadside which was returned by the battery of guns guarding that side of the harbour. Next Thunder was sent in to test the enemy defences...Saumarez now decided to burn the Russian fleet at anchor."
- p. 164: Whilst waiting for the fireships to be made ready a Russian officer now came aboard Saumarez's flagship under a flag of truce apparently to discuss the exchange of Russian prisoners from Sevolod...Skripeetzen was taken below to see Victory's gun decks cleared for action. Extra shot had been piled up alongside the long guns, some of it 'franked' in chalk by the crew with messages such as 'Post-paid' and 'Free, George Canning'." (fireship attack is eventually called off)
- p. 167: "Saumarez maintained the blockade of Rogervik until 30 September when, rather than risk being iced in for the winter, he took the bulk of the combined fleet south to Karlskrona"
- p. 168: "On 4 October Mars reconnoitred Rogervik and observed that the Russian fleet had left the port...Saumarez decided to take the ships under his command and return to Gothenburg."
- p. 168: "Victory dropped anchor in Hawke Road on 28 October. On his arrival in Gothenburg Saumarez received orders from the Admiralty dated 15 October directing him to return with his ships to the Downs, leavings Keats at Vinga with a reduced squadron...On 3 November Victory sailed for England in company with Centaur and Implacable, escorting a convoy of several hundred merchant ships on the voyage back to the Downs."
- p. 169: "Victory arrived at the Downs on 8 November 1808."
- Sullivan provides much more on the following three years of Victory's service with Saumarez but that covers 1808 for you. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 17:45, 27 February 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks, Sullivan is particularly useful as he confirms that the troops were la Romana's and that Victory was actively involved in their evacuation; points that weren't made clear by Lavery. He also explains how Moore got back to England, another thing Lavery misses out. I'll weave some of this detail in over the next day or two. --Ykraps (talk) 18:16, 28 February 2025 (UTC)
