Talk page reverts

[edit]

This IP is allowed to remove the warning on their own talk page per WP:TPO. Removal is acknowledgement that the person read it. EvergreenFir (talk) 22:22, 3 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @EvergreenFir Funny thing is that I saw they reverted your warning, so I tried to help. Only because in the past I've seen those types of warnings were reverted. No good deed goes unpunished (That's me!). I knew that I would see a red bell light up, lol ... that's why I stopped after two reverts. Thanks for your message and good luck throwing out future trash. ;) Regards, - Bringingthewood (talk) 22:36, 3 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@WikiOriginal-9 HA! You would not believe how much I wanted to stay away from that one. I just couldn't, lol. @WikiOriginal-9 ROFL!! Sorry, I was going to call the paramedics, the pain due to laughing so hard. That was a good one. You may want to revert a few more, lol. Bringingthewood (talk) 01:34, 31 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@WikiOriginal-9 Thanks for the American addition to German-born. If I see a military born player, even though assuming gets ME in trouble, I could go that route. Should I amend Tody Smith? Not sure if there's an age limit for when they come to the U.S. or even become a citizen. Bringingthewood (talk) 02:52, 8 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If they're just military born, they're not really German. The Schwedes guy was actually from Germany. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 02:57, 8 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Honestly, I thought you were going to drop by there anyway .. but just to remove the dash, lol. Maybe I'll just stick with the country I know about. Country

[edit]

I see you're dabbling in basketball. Nothing about patriotism, but if the country is present in the birthplace, the nationality can be removed if it's redundant e.g. someone born in the US being American (MOS:INFONAT). I fixed Dijon Thompson after your change. Happy editing. —Bagumba (talk) 07:50, 7 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Bagumba I knew you would notice. What took you so long, lol? You removed the nationality last week on another one, and I was wondering if I should look out for that. So if I see American in the birthplace and for (Nationality: American) in the infobox, I will remove it. Have to say, the basketball pages are done very, very well and you get a 'big pat on the back' for all you did and are doing. That's why I'm sticking with only five things: (adding U.S., removing dupl. links, retired/former American, first name/month from caption, and MOS:THENICKNAME). Trust me, I don't want to tinker all that much over there ... you know what I mean. Drop by when I screw up and I'll minimize what I do. Promise. ;) Regards, John. Bringingthewood (talk) 00:33, 8 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Bagumba I may have to stick with 'American only' pages when removing that parameter. I just checked three foreign players, they have their nationality present in the lead and place of birth in the infobox .. but all have the nationality parameter present. Bringingthewood (talk) 00:48, 8 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
There are countries that don't offer birth citizenship, but it's also possible that non-NBA editors didn't get the memo. —Bagumba (talk) 03:49, 8 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Bagumba See, that first sentence already made my head hurt .. I stick with American. The memo you sent today works for me. I even used MOS: on some non-NBA pages. Regarding David Blu, I put back what I removed earlier. The U.S. is listed, but Israel was only in the lead sentence. I'm not going to throw a wrench in these pages, they're too neat. Civility

[edit]

You were asking at ANI for the rule applicable to others. See WP:REMOVEUNCIVIL: In the event of rudeness or incivility on the part of another editor, it may be appropriate to discuss the offending words with that editor, and to request that editor to change that specific wording. Some care is necessary, however, so as not to further inflame the situation. It is not normally appropriate to edit or remove another editor's comment. Exceptions include to remove obvious trolling or vandalism, or if the comment is on your own user talk page. Derogatory comments about another contributor may be removed by any editor. Thanks for carrying the stick. —Bagumba (talk) 04:06, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Joel Steed

[edit]

I'll trust the Steelers fan on this. Otherwise, I always find it somewhat of a pain to source military brats and punt, leaving them as former Americans LOL.—Bagumba (talk) 07:04, 17 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Bagumba Honestly, I try to avoid these. I believe Steed is an American. But is it German-born in the lead, just a former professional American football player ...? I believe WO-9 was speaking to me about this in the past. If someone comes to the U.S. within a month or two, or even at two years old, .. he's really not German. John. Bringingthewood (talk) 21:25, 17 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Here's another. Is Elnardo Webster really Italian, or just Italian-born? Bringingthewood (talk) 21:55, 17 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker) I don't know Italian citizenship rules but I'd say no. It looks like his dad, Elnardo Webster (basketball), was playing basketball in Italy in 1969. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 22:05, 17 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@WikiOriginal-9 Ahh, so that's what he was doing over there, lol. Do you go with Italian-born .. or Italian born, however it should be? It's your edit if you want it. :) John. Bringingthewood (talk) 22:11, 17 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'd just put American. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 22:14, 17 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@WikiOriginal-9 I'm with you. I guess when I see so many blank-born, I'm waiting for someone to ask me if I looked at the infobox. Not sure if this is where the whole Joel Steed lead was going. I'm all for getting into it with other editors, but I'd love it if the three of us could all agree on this. This way when you and/or @Bagumba revert something I did in error, it'll be a pleasant slap in the face. ;) Bringingthewood (talk) 22:28, 17 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Knowing how much u love MOS, MOS:BIRTHPLACE says:

Birth and death places, if known, should be mentioned in the body of the article, and can appear in the lead if relevant to notability, but not in the opening brackets alongside the birth and death dates

Bagumba (talk) 23:27, 17 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Bagumba Ahh, you do have a gift, B! I'm sticking with my original thought: 'I try to avoid these'. You and @WikiOriginal-9 have my blessing going forward. On the lighter side, the Muhammad Ali deal ended up on a pretty good note (lose the battle and win the war). Not sure if Sonny Liston will have the same fate. That MOS: really agitates people, lol. Bringingthewood (talk) 23:43, 17 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I usually just kick the can down the road for now. Former-American Americans are low hanging fruit and a dime a dozen (but I did confirm one German-born as a true American recently). —Bagumba (talk) 23:55, 17 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Bagumba The confirmation process does go a long way. I thought of you when I saw a retired American the other day. I wanted to change it to: is a retired American, now Italian, soon to be a German basketball player. Screw 'em if they can't take a joke. Bringingthewood (talk) 00:23, 18 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I think we assume they did not renounce citizenship unless sources say otherwise. —Bagumba (talk) 03:00, 18 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

High school (U.S.)

[edit]

@Bagumba, @WikiOriginal-9, @Dissident93, @Hey man im josh. Any input on what I missed regarding this, you might as well tell me over here, I wasted enough space on B's page already. I apologize in advance if this was decided already and I missed it. Just going forward, I'd rather be on the same page with a handful of editors at least. Thanks, John. Bringingthewood (talk) 22:11, 6 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

He's just talking about the standard infobox formatting for high schools. Nothing new. It's on most pages now. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 22:17, 6 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That means, until today, U.S. is next to a U.S. high school .. and two players already don't have it. Did I just not see this addition? On my father, I never saw U.S. noted there. It's fine with me, but I was worried about army brats last week and see U.S. in my sleep, lol. Should Osi and Morten Andersen be added now? If someone removes them in the future should I argue first, link a consensus? Never saw it on an NFL page. Bringingthewood (talk) 22:23, 6 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I find it redundant if the player was born in the U.S. and it's already displayed in |birth_place=. I can see it being added/kept for players born outside the U.S. like Mike Sainristil though. ~ Dissident93 (talk) 22:28, 6 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@WikiOriginal-9, @Dissident93 Understood. No way should it be listed again, it's like the wrestlers pages (billed from). I'm all for it and will get right on it. I just basically needed to know when I missed this memo. I'm not blind and I know I never saw this in the infobox before. As long as the majority go for it, I'll be in the right. I appreciate the feedback. Bringingthewood (talk) 22:40, 6 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I've never seen US in the high school parameter before until just now. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 22:51, 6 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
LOL, I knew I grabbed the 80 proof and not the 151. That's all I needed to hear, WO-9!!! Thank you for that. Shame on you, it's U.S. lololol. Bringingthewood (talk) 23:00, 6 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I've added country in cases where the HS's differs from the birthplace. —Bagumba (talk) 22:59, 6 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Bagumba Thank you, B. I will now do the same. Never saw it before, it makes sense, and I'll keep an eye out for them going forward. Bringingthewood (talk) 23:03, 6 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
For a non-US example, Tom Nütten was born in US and went to HS in Canada. —Bagumba (talk) 23:13, 6 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Bagumba. Well put. If it works like that, it should go for non-U.S. born players also. Sorry, but I have to use the periods. ;) Bringingthewood (talk) 23:18, 6 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I can't take the full credit/blame for this, as Sebastian Vollmer has shown born in W. Germany and HS in Germany since at least 2018.[5]Bagumba (talk) 23:23, 6 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I can blame you for it .. I mean .. credit, lol. Bringingthewood (talk) 23:31, 6 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
And Cameron Johnston with Australia Australia since 2018.[6]Bagumba (talk) 23:42, 6 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Bagumba Yeah, I have seen other countries listed there, but the U.S.? WO-9 bailed me out, I thought I was losing my mind, I never saw them either. Just U.S., that's all I'm talking about. Bringingthewood (talk) 23:53, 6 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Whoever is reading this. I added U.S. to Ernie Stautner, the more I look at it, the more redundant it becomes. Like @Dissident93 mentioned above, if it's listed in the birth place, you wouldn't add it. How about when it's only the place of death? Three times seems a bit much. Bringingthewood (talk) 00:36, 7 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Flip a coin. On the one hand, both HSs are in NY, so once is fine. On the other hand, we repeat country for birth and death places. Also, one wouldn't necessarily expect that a person died in the same country as they went to high school (compared to thinking someone went to HS matching their birth country). —Bagumba (talk) 01:12, 7 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Bagumba It landed on heads, I left one for New York. It shortened the line again anyway. That pretty much answers the place of death question I had. Example, a player was born in Ireland, and high school was in the U.S. - simple. When that player dies in the U.S., we're not going back to remove it from the HS section. At least I hope not. Bringingthewood (talk) 01:19, 7 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
List HS country only if it differs from birth place (independent of death place) —Bagumba (talk) 01:24, 7 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Bagumba Right, like Stautner's page. Bringingthewood (talk) 01:29, 7 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding your edit on Dodo Marmarosa, the infobox template page I linked to states: "Omit the country if it does not differ from that specified at the field "birth_place"." Maybe that's different from sports pages, but it's clear about music biography pages, so US shouldn't be repeated in the Marmarosa infobox. EddieHugh (talk) 20:56, 13 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@EddieHugh Thanks for the reply, Eddie. I realized after my revert, it's not your job to give me an explanation. It's the crazy rules we have that annoys me. Some pages one thing and others another. In the future, just revert what I do in case I hit the 'music biography' section by accident. Nothing personal. Thank you again and sorry for the inconvenience. Comma

[edit]

I don't know one way or the other, but I guess there is some grammar standard about circa and commas? —Bagumba (talk) 04:25, 24 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Bagumba Are we leading up to .... the 100 I saw with commas, before I started adding them (which was the reasoning I started to do that), are now wrong? Bringingthewood (talk) 04:29, 24 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I dont know, was just asking. So it's Bozo in 2025 not Bozo, in 2025, but Bozo, c. 2025 not Bozo c. 2025. Definitely if it was a sentence before "c.", but not sure about one word. —Bagumba (talk) 04:36, 24 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Bagumba You were asking ME ... now that's scary, lol. Honestly, the c. always looked like a middle initial to me. When I saw so many with commas, I went with it. I really thought I would have had an unhappy customer drop by well before your question. But I do know if there's a WP rule out there, you're the one to find it. ;) Then I will take yet another "A", myself and my token and board the train. Bringingthewood (talk) 04:44, 24 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Was just curious. I'm not removing them, but probably won't be adding them either. As for middle initial, you could go hardcore and use {{circa}} per MOS:CIRCA to add the dotted line. —Bagumba (talk) 04:53, 24 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Bagumba Same here, I'm just going to stop. While that does sound like fun, I'm pretty much getting the most from MOS: right now. Who knows what tomorrow will bring? As always, I do appreciate the message. John. Bringingthewood (talk) 05:08, 24 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Who knows what tomorrow will bring?: More rescued "former Americans" hopefully. Cheers. —Bagumba (talk) 05:12, 24 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Don't forget about the former Canadians either ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 05:14, 24 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
And the former Canadians who are really Americans. —Bagumba (talk) 05:15, 24 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Quite a lot of those, less than there used to be tho ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 05:17, 24 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, only a few hundred "former Canadians" compared to few thousand former Americans. But I think nobody went and created a page for anyone that played 1 CFL game. —Bagumba (talk) 05:24, 24 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I Googled "comma before circa" and I literally got no results so I don't think anyone else knows the answer either. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 05:13, 24 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I did notice this Featured article review where someone said "I'd put a comma before "ca. 1890" in the caption" and it looks like it is still in the article. lol ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 05:20, 24 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@WikiOriginal-9 Thanks for all the info. Bottom line, what that means to me is: John, you better quit while you're ahead!!! Bringingthewood (talk) 05:22, 24 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Better safe than sorry ... lol ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 05:24, 24 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Not saying it's wrong, but that it just seems "weird" when there's just one word and then a comma. —Bagumba (talk) 05:26, 24 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Bagumba I agree. But when I saw so many done that way .. I figured weird was the way to go. Bringingthewood (talk) 05:33, 24 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The "ca." didn't age well. MOS:CIRCA reads "c. is preferred over circa, c, ca, ca. ..." Immediate WP:FAR!—Bagumba (talk) 05:34, 24 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Bagumba Forget aging, it dies with me tonight. Unless I had to add it to a caption. Let's hope that day is far, far away. Bringingthewood (talk) 05:44, 24 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

Hi there. For something like this, if the high school name (Lancaster) is the same as the birthplace (Lancaster) and located in the birthpace (Lancaster), there's no need to repeat the city again. It more or less says that at Template:Infobox NFL biography. I went and tweaked it. —Bagumba (talk) 05:20, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Bagumba Thank you for that, B. It was one of the many things I thought about for months. As you know, I don't always read ahead. I do use the WP: link for other edit summaries. I'll correct them going forward. Thank you, John. Bringingthewood (talk) 21:11, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
As always, no pressure. —Bagumba (talk) 02:58, 29 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
