Nauta image was a blatant copyright violation
[edit]The image of Walt Nauta that you uploaded to commons was a blatant copyright violation of a copyrighted website, https://www.kuam.com/story/49060758/former-guam-resident-indicted-in-trump-case. You labeled it a US government website despite the page saying All content © copyright KUAM. Your misinformation is disruptive and could lead to you being blocked if it continues. Toddst1 (talk) 00:01, 11 June 2023 (UTC)
- My bad. I did not see the notice. It wasn't intentional, I assumed it was an official portrait because of the American flag at the back and Nauta's status as a federal employee. Bremps... 00:03, 11 June 2023 (UTC)
Regarding deletion of a page
[edit]Hi! I had a query/request for you. According do Wiki's page creation policy, a article must have citations to support it, according to my understanding. I came across a page, K. Annamalai which is with regard to a erstwhile Member of the Legislative Assembly (India) in India all the way in 2001. Th entire article has only two references and the personality is hardly prominent too. Frankly, I don't see this article having any relevance on Wikipedia. Hence, I would be grateful, if you could give me your opinion on this being an experienced editor, and perhaps nominate it for speedy deletion. Thank you! ChaitanyaJo (talk) 13:30, 12 June 2023 (UTC)
- Hello @ChaitanyaJo, glad to help.
- It does not appear to be notable. It seems to be fairly routine coverage of election results. Earlier, I had linked several sources, but that was a different K Annamalai.
- I would recommend nominating it for deletion. Happy editing!
- By the way, how did you come across my page?
Bremps... 13:51, 12 June 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for replying. I had asked this same question to another admin. He replied that, apparently K. Annamalai is presumed to be notable on wikipedia per WP:NPOL. What do you think? I found you here. ChaitanyaJo (talk) 16:06, 12 June 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @ChaitanyaJo, I'm not an admin.
- I was mistaken; we should follow policy here then. I do believe the policy may be unreasonable during times, though. Cheers! Bremps... 16:11, 12 June 2023 (UTC)
- I guess so. Thank you for your help. Have a good day ChaitanyaJo (talk) 16:54, 12 June 2023 (UTC)

[edit]Hello. Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. I noticed that your recent edit to Internet minute did not have an edit summary. You can use the edit summary field to explain your reasoning for an edit, or to provide a description of what the edit changes. Summaries save time for other editors and reduce the chances that your edit will be misunderstood. For some edits, an adequate summary may be quite brief.
The edit summary field looks like this:

Please provide an edit summary for every edit you make. With a Wikipedia account you can give yourself a reminder to add an edit summary by setting Preferences → Editing → Prompt me when entering a blank edit summary, and then click the "Save" button. Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Tetsuya Yamagami in high school.webp
[edit]Thank you for uploading File:Tetsuya Yamagami in high school.webp. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.
If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. ‑‑Neveselbert (talk · contribs · email) 16:17, 5 August 2023 (UTC)

[edit]thanks for removing that image but also saying that you will add one later. i am not exactly an expert on when free use and when not, especially when you fully disclose that the image is in faact copyrighted and you document everything in the upload. i thought i followed all the steps, but if you could help then i could refer to this article and this image for future use by just viewing the history for the future. thanks Iljhgtn (talk) 14:26, 20 October 2023 (UTC)
- this is referring to the aella (data scientist) page just since i realized that i did not mention that Iljhgtn (talk) 14:27, 20 October 2023 (UTC)
- @Iljhgtn Don't sweat it. Usually, we can only use fair use in circumstances where a free image cannot be produced. For instance, the Notorious B.I.G and Sana'a Mehaidli died without anyone taking a freely licensed image of them, so we use a fair use image on their page. Similarly, Richard Reid and David Berkowitz are both in jail for the rest of their lives, so no one can take a free photo of them. Jho Low is a fugitive, and no one knows where he is, so he also has a fair use photo on his page (since no one can locate him to take a free picture).
- Guernica, the Picasso painting, is also under copyright (Picasso's), so we use a fair use image. Any image of Guernica would be under Picasso's copyright, so no freely licensed images can be taken.
- On the other hand, Aella is very much alive, and giving high-profile interviews, so we can't upload a fair use image for her. Furthermore, there are freely licensed images of her (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPWiIz6UYs8&ab_channel=ReasonTV) so we definitely can't apply fair use.
- Hope this helps. Bremps... 14:48, 20 October 2023 (UTC)
- how do you know that they are freely licensed? how do you search for that? do you google, "free licensed pictures of John Doe" and then thats it?
- i see that link has this on it, but i haven't looked for that before, at least not on YouTube videos "License
- Creative Commons Attribution license (reuse allowed)"
- Does that mean we are free to take a screenshot from that video? if so, what is the best way to do that? Pause it and screen shot then use the upload wizard and follow all of the promotps? Iljhgtn (talk) 18:25, 20 October 2023 (UTC)
- You can filter by "Creative Commons licenses" under "Usage Rights" under "Tools" if you use Google Images. In Flickr, toggle from "Any license" to "Commercial use allowed".
- For the second part of your question, yes. That means they released it under a CC-BY 3.0 unported license, which means we are free to take a screenshot and use it how we wish (after uploading it on Commons with UploadWizard). Cheers, Bremps... 00:10, 21 October 2023 (UTC)

{{owner contacted}}
[edit]First of all, thanks for creating this. I proposed a process to keep track of copyright holders who are or aren't willing to relicense their works some time ago, but the idea didn't get much attention. We do have WikiProject Permission requests on Commons, but it seems barely anyone goes there. With this template, we can hopefully prevent people from wasting their time trying to contact copyright holders who already said no.
However, I do have a concern: saying the copyright holder "has not expressed an interest" in relicensing the file might be a bit ambiguous because it could either mean they declined or simply didn't respond. I'm thinking there could be an optional details parameter for documenting our interaction with the copyright holder. Thoughts? Ixfd64 (talk) 07:10, 29 January 2024 (UTC)
- Honestly, sounds great. Go for it. Bremps... 13:12, 29 January 2024 (UTC)

Math issue
[edit]Just to correct one comment you made [1] .. I believe your math is wrong.
Because 0.001% of 13 million is 130.
Not 13,000.
And 130, out of 13 million, is of course quite uncommon.
0.001%, to be exact. 2603:7000:2101:AA00:C9C6:6A05:7D88:5830 (talk) 09:15, 22 September 2024 (UTC)
- My apologies. I could reopen the discussion at DYK if you would like. Outside of the rarity issue, I'm not sold on height hooks (which would also open the door to making a hook about a short person). Bremps... 05:25, 24 September 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for reconsidering, apologizing, and the offer. I'm ok with the bottom line--if you still dislike the height hook, as I would have been with a consensus disagreeing with me as to whether (for a reason I'm unclear on) 0.001% meets the hookiness standard at WP: that it "be likely to be perceived as unusual or intriguing by readers with no special knowledge or interest." That's uncommonly unusual.
- And I thought the other commenter's comments were bizarre. He claimed his reason was that it was not unusual (which you unfortunately incorrectly supported - by inflating its usualness 100-fold.
- I would appreciate you correcting the record back there, where you made a good-faith mistake supporting his thinking, as the number of such women in Australia appears to be about 12,870 fewer than what you stated.
- Beyond that, I'm OK with your hook, if you still maintain that 0.001% is not "unusual."
- As to short people, it may be unusual as well. If you think it is pejorative, that could be raised at the DYK. Though I would point out the existence of List of the verified shortest people. It is not pejorative here.--2603:7000:2101:AA00:D4D7:86F5:5AC:BD5F (talk) 06:32, 24 September 2024 (UTC)
- It's pretty unusual, but I'm still tripped up on the intriguing part. I don't think it leaves the reader wanting to know more of the person. I'll concede the point on the verified list of shortest people, though. Bremps... 15:13, 24 September 2024 (UTC)
- Hi. Thanks for your response. I would note that the wp hookiness standard, linked to above is not that the hook needs to be "unusual and intriguing" -- which would be the only case in which one might get tripped up as to whether the hook is intriguing. The wp standard is, rather, "unusual" or intriguing." Thus, the hook meets the wp hookiness standard if .. as you note is the case .. the hook is unusual. 2603:7000:2101:AA00:D4D7:86F5:5AC:BD5F (talk) 20:29, 24 September 2024 (UTC)

- It's pretty unusual, but I'm still tripped up on the intriguing part. I don't think it leaves the reader wanting to know more of the person. I'll concede the point on the verified list of shortest people, though. Bremps... 15:13, 24 September 2024 (UTC)

The file File:Leticia Sardá photo by Leandre Escorsell.jpeg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
Sarda is still alive, so this clearly falls under unacceptable uses of non-free images.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.
Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Based5290 :3 (talk) 06:22, 4 October 2024 (UTC)

Administrator Elections: Call for Candidates
[edit]Administrator Elections | Call for Candidates
The administrator elections process has officially started! Interested editors are encouraged to self-nominate or arrange to be nominated by reviewing the instructions at Wikipedia:Administrator elections/October 2024/Call for candidates.
Here is the schedule:
- October 8–14 - Candidate sign-up (we are here)
- October 22–24 - Discussion phase
- October 25–31 - SecurePoll voting phase
Please note the following:
- The requirements to run are identical to RFA—a prospective candidate must be extended confirmed.
- Prospective candidates are advised to become familar with the community's expectations of adminstrators, which are much higher than the minimum requirement of having extended confirmed status. This includes reviewing successful and unsuccessful RFAs, reading the essay Wikipedia:Advice for RfA candidates, and possibly requesting an optional poll on their chances of passing.
- The process will have a one week call for candidates phase, a one week pause to set up SecurePoll, a three-day period of public discussion, followed by 7 days of no public discussion and a private vote using SecurePoll.
- The outcomes of this process are identical to making requests for adminship. There is no official difference between an administrator appointed through RFA or administrator elections.
- Administrator elections are also a valid means of regaining adminship for de-sysopped editors.
Ask any questions about the process at the talk page. A separate user talk message will be sent to official candidates with additional information about the process.
To avoid sending too many messages, this will be the last mass message sent about administrator elections. If you are interested in the process, please make sure to watchlist the appropriate pages. A watchlist notice will be added when the discussion phase opens, and again when the voting phase opens.

Administrator Elections: Discussion phase
[edit]The discussion phase of the October 2024 administrator elections is officially open. As a reminder, the schedule of the election is:
- October 22–24 - Discussion phase
- October 25–31 - SecurePoll voting phase
- November 1–? - Scrutineering phase
During October 22–24, we will be in the discussion phase. The candidate subpages will open to questions and comments from everyone, in the same style as a request for adminship. You may discuss the candidates at Wikipedia:Administrator elections/October 2024/Discussion phase.
On October 25, we will start the voting phase. The candidate subpages will close again to public questions and discussion, and everyone will have a week to use the SecurePoll software to vote, which uses a secret ballot. You can see who voted, but not who they voted for. Please note that the vote tallies cannot be made public until after voting has ended and as such, it will not be possible for you to see an individual candidate's tally during the election. The suffrage requirements are different from those at RFA.
Once voting concludes, we will begin the scrutineering phase, which will last for an indeterminate amount of time, perhaps a week or two. Once everything is certified, the results will be posted on the main election page. In order to be granted adminship, a candidate must have received at least 70.0% support, calculated as Support / (Support + Oppose). As this is a vote and not a consensus, there are no bureaucrat discussions ("crat chats").
Any questions or issues can be asked on the election talk page. Thank you for your participation. Happy electing.
