1803 Siege Leader Correction

Under the history section of the article, it is claimed that the city was captured via siege by Richard Wellesley, Earl of Mornington. This is using a citation from the Encyclopedia Brittanica, which states that General Wellesley captured the city. This is a correct citation in that a General Wellesley did capture the city in 1803; however, the General in question was not Richard, but Arthur Wellesley, the future Duke of Wellington.

Was added by a Columbia University IP along with many other links to the site. I have moved it hear in keeping with our external links guidelines so unconnected editors can evaluate its appropriateness. Many of the websites entries are short and may not contain much more than the articles they have been added to. Looking higher up in thr thread the proposal is to change the name to ahilyanagar (I’m assuming the missing first cspitel letter is a mistake) though there is no reason provided as to why that the change should be made.--65.93.194.183 (talk) 21:48, 6 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Comment: Removed a sectiom heading—based on the way the text flows, it seems like these are part of the same discussion: that is, the RM template was supposed to be a reply to the first question, not to be substituted. Oppose: Only sources I see mentioning "Ahilyanagar" are news articles (all from either 31 May or 1 June) announcing the proposed change. Meanwhile, the official district website uses "Ahmednagar". There's nothing to indicate that "Ahilyanagar" has actually supplanted "Ahmednagar" in current use. 3 kids in a trenchcoat (talk) 20:26, 5 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Ahmednagar renamed as Ahilya Nagar

Ahmednagar renamed as Ahilya Nagar 2404:BA00:1:5B6D:3C46:F46E:FFD0:FC9B (talk) 10:27, 2 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

But the new name of the city was only approved by the state cabinet on 13 March 2024. But if people want to rename the article, they need to present evidence that "Ahilya Nagar" is the commonly used name in English. Note that news stories about the renaming are not evidence that "Ahilya Nagar" is the commonly used name.

The article should be written using the article name, not some other name. I have added a paragraph to the history section on the renaming of the city.
