In rail transport, a train is a vehicle or (more frequently) a string of vehicles capable of being moved along a continuous line of rails or other guideway for the purpose of conveying freight or passengers between points on a predetermined route. The train may be hauled or propelled by one or more vehicles designed exclusively for that purpose (locomotives) or may be driven by a number of motors incorporated in all or several of the vehicles (multiple units).

As of 2018, there are approximately 1,052,000 kilometres (654,000 mi) of railway track in use worldwide. (World Bank (via Archive.org))

A Flytoget train at Gardermoen Station in 2007

Oslo Airport Station (Norwegian: Oslo lufthavn stasjon), also known as Gardermoen Station, is a railway station located in the terminal building of Oslo Airport, Gardermoen, in Norway. Located on the Gardermoen Line, it is served by the Airport Express Train, express trains to Trondheim and Oslo, regional trains to Lillehammer and Skien (via Oslo) and commuter trains to Eidsvoll and Kongsberg (via Oslo). The station is located 48 kilometres (30 mi) from Oslo S. The station is manned, and there is a single bus route, and several coach services, to and from the airport. It opened in 1998, along with the new airport. During 2000–01, there were several derailments at the station. South of the station is a terminal for unloading trains carrying aviation fuel.

Steam dome construction
Steam dome construction

A cutaway view of the steam dome on a steam locomotive. Steam in the boiler collects in this dome at the top of the locomotive. Valves actuated by the engineer control the flow of steam from this dome through a large pipe, visible here, to the cylinders. Often, a smaller pipe, also seen here, leads from the steam dome to the locomotive's whistle.
