What is the contribution of Karl Marx,Max Weber and Emile Durkheim in sociology. The narration should be guided by the ideas of these scholars.

Result: No improvement; the article clearly does not meet article 2 of the GA criteria. ~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk) 08:48, 2 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

GA from 2009. There's quite a lot of uncited material in the article. Onegreatjoke (talk) 23:24, 21 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Circular definition

edit

If any Wikipedia editor is infuriated by a dictionary definition of "to be" as "the state of be-ing", you will understand my objection to the introductory paragraph of "Sociology." Re:

"Sociology is the scientific study of human society that focuses on society, human social behavior, patterns of social relationships, social interaction, and aspects of culture associated with everyday life. Regarded as a part of both the social sciences and humanities, sociology uses various methods of empirical investigation and critical analysis: 3–5  to develop a body of knowledge about social order and social change.: 32–40  Sociological subject matter ranges from micro-level analyses of individual interaction and agency to macro-level analyses of social systems and social structure."

I count 13 uses of the "soci-" prefix to define what the uninformed come to this page to discover: the meaning of "Soci-ology." I'm sorry, but do not soci-ologists recognize this glaring tautology, because it cannot be that an expert in the field would go on and on about all the ways the English language can talk about "soci-", without defining the term in other words the average reader can understand, can it "be" ?

To be constructive, the opening paragraph could be cut up into smaller sentences, with each instance of the prefix "soci-" replaced with a simple explanation of the underlying human behavior, before I become more un"soci-"able. I would do it myself, and maybe I will, when sanity eventually informs my fury... SalineBrain (talk) 05:58, 29 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

I recommend not to alter the definition unless it directly reflects reliable sources. All words are defined in terms of other words, I'm afraid—and your particular objections here border on fallacies of etymology. Definitions like these are meant to describe subjects to readers potentially encountering them for the very first time, ideally using plain language—as opposed to clearing some arbitrary standard of mathematical rigour. @Remsense Thank you for trying to make peace between my sanity and my fury, but I suspect we are already in agreement. Far from eschewing reliable sources, I simply desire definitions NOT based in etymology. That is, let's NOT write "Sociology is the study of sociological behavior", please, for it is much too obvious to the English reader, and conveys no new knowledge. Maybe more like "Sociology is the study of interactions between humans." SalineBrain (talk) 08:58, 29 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
There may be tweaking in this way, but I recommend you peruse the three sources cited inline to the definition first. Remsense ‥  09:51, 29 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
