Post Office
editNeed confirmation on this. Each postal code represent a post office. There is only one post office in each postal code area. There are no private post offices which provides services of register mail or collect mails. The mail boxes are dome shaped boxes placed on the side of a street. Npindia 18:34, 20 January 2006 (UTC)
- I don't think so. Each postcode may not necessarily mean there is only one post office in that area. And, There may be some post offices which handle only telegraphs.-- Chez (Discuss / Email) • 04:13, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
- 'Each postal code represent a post office'- Almost in all cases. But in certain cases there are something called 'extention' post offices under the same postal code. For example a tiny postoffice within a college campus or the likes for the convinence of the users. You would find such multiple postoffice under the same postal code more in a city location than say in a village. But this is not a norm.
- 'Private post office' - Well, there are many. If you consider the likes of DHL, UPS, Bluedart etc. But then according to some (funny) Indian the 'personal letters' should be sent only through the state run post office! I mean the private 'couries' are only meant for sending the 'documents' and the likes.
- 'dome shaped boxes'- Not always! The newer ones are mostly box time. But I love the dome type ones. It go well with the charector of the postal department.

Proposal
editHere is a proposal for the structure of the article:
- History
- Governance and organization (including monopoly status)
- Types of postal facilities/Hierarchy
- Major postal services
- Non-postal services
- Postage stamps
This is largely based on the articles Royal Mail and United States Postal Service. Please comment.--Dwaipayan (talk) 14:04, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
Logo
editI've added the logo; anyone may crop it if needed. Done. --Victor.P.Das 16:17, 17 May 2006 (UTC)

Org. Chart
editI am tempted to upload this but am not sure about copyright status. An image from a government website could be copyright, but what about a chart like this? - Aksi_great (talk) 19:50, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
PIN Code?
editWhat are PIN codes? They appear to be analogous to ZIP codes, and there's a few articles listing PIN Codes for cities or regions in India. But what are the codes? There's no "PIN Codes" article. -- Mikeblas 15:27, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
- See Postal Index Number and Postal code. - Ganeshk (talk) 23:47, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks! I see you also added a PIN Codes redirect, which is very helpful. -- Mikeblas 00:45, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
I came accross an address that has the same structure as the following example:
- Manandal P.O., Gingee TK, Villupuram DT.
Does anyone know what these abbreviations stand for? Wiki-uk (talk) 15:17, 14 February 2008 (UTC)
- With the exception of P.O. of course, which stands for 'Post Office'... Wiki-uk (talk) 15:18, 14 February 2008 (UTC)
- I got the answer now: TK is Taluk (part of a district}, and DT is District. Wiki-uk (talk) 20:59, 8 March 2008 (UTC)
Layman's look at the subject
editI found some updated info about the postal services in india which Indian Postal Department is offering. I propose including A layman's look at the Indian Postal Department link in external links section. This information would really add to this article.
Ritesh Raghuvanshi (talk) —Preceding undated comment was added at 06:42, 24 September 2008 (UTC).
Yes, some more basics could perhaps be added in this article for a layman. Like, the article doesn't hint that even within India, there is something called registered post/registry, which is slightly more expensive than normal post, but you get receipt. The article only talks about registered post in the context of international posts.
India Post
editIsn't it time the article is moved to the name India Post? Thoughts? TheMike •Wassup doc? 19:08, 3 January 2011 (UTC)

Colors of Post Boxes in India
editMail Transmission Post office collects letters and parcels either through its counters or by installing letterboxes. People drop letters in these boxes at any time according to their convenience and post office collects these once or twice everyday during office hours. You may find these boxes outside every post office and also at some specific places for the convenience of the public. But have you ever noticed that in some places there may be letterboxes with different colours like red, green, blue and yellow. Why are they so? Actually the main purpose of installing letterboxes with different colours is to segregate mails of different destination at the time of receiving them. This facilitates quick sorting and delivery of letters. Let us see which box collects which type of mail: ! Red boxes are meant for collection of mails, which are not local. ! Green boxes are meant for collection of local mail. ! Blue boxes are meant for collection of mails addressed to metro cities. ! Yellow boxes are meant for collection of mails addressed to all capital cities. Babloo2764 (talk) 07:56, 10 September 2016 (UTC)
Is mail not a mass pronoun in Indian English? I ask because it appears on both the page and talk page with the plural "mails". Otherwise, I'd just change it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.26.8.212 (talk) 00:54, 18 December 2018 (UTC)
