Montecristo (Spanish pronunciation:[monteˈkɾisto]) is the name of two brands of premium cigars, one produced in Cuba for Habanos SA, the Cuban state-owned tobacco company, and the other produced in La Romana, Dominican Republic for the Franco-Spanish tobacco monopoly Altadis SA, a division of Imperial Tobacco.
History
In July 1935, Alonso Menéndez purchased the Particulares Factory, makers of the popular Particulares brand and the lesser-known Byron. Immediately after its acquisition, he created a new brand named Montecristo.
The name for the brand was inspired by the Alexandre Dumas, père novel The Count of Monte Cristo, which was supposedly a very popular choice among the torcedores (cigar rollers) in their factory to have read by the lector on the rolling floor. The now-famous Montecristo logo, consisting of a triangle of six swords surrounding a fleur-de-lis, was designed by John Hunter Morris and Elkan Co. Ltd., the brand's British distributor.
In July 1936, Menéndez founded a new firm with a partner, naming it Menéndez, García y Cía. With the growing success of the Montecristo brand, the firm purchased the faltering H. Upmann Factory from J. Frankau SA in 1937 and transferred the production of Montecristo from the Particulares Factory to H. Upmann, which continued to be the home of the Montecristo brand after the Revolution.
Montecristo (Italian pronunciation:[monteˈkristo]; also Monte Cristo), formerly Oglasa (in Ancient Greek: Ὠγλάσσα Ōglassa), is an island in the Tyrrhenian Sea and part of the Tuscan Archipelago. Administratively it belongs to the municipality of Portoferraio in the province of Livorno, Italy. The island has an area of 10.39km2 (4.01sqmi), it is approximately 4.1km (2.5mi) wide at its widest point and is 3.4km (2.1mi) long; the coasts are steep, and extend for 16km (9.9mi). The island is a state nature reserve and forms part of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park.
The history of the island begins with the Iron Age. The Etruscans exploited the forests of oak needed to fuel the bloomeries of the mainland where the iron ore of Elba's mines was melted. The Greeks gave Montecristo its oldest known name, Oglasa or Ocrasia, after the yellowish colour of the rocks. The Romans, however, knew it under the name Mons Jovis, and erected an altar to Iuppiter Optimus Maximus on the highest mountain, of which some traces remain. During the imperial age, the Romans opened some quarries to extract granite, perhaps used in the construction of villas on the islands of Giglio, Elba, and Giannutri.
Montecristo is a Spanish-language telenovela that aired on TV Azteca. It premiered on August 14, 2006. The final original episode aired April 27, 2007. It is based on Argentinian telenovela of the same name, with Rita Fusaro, one of the producer of the original version, serving as the producer in this version.
Story
Montecristo is the story of Santiago Diaz Herrera(Diego Olivera), a young man who apparently seems to have it all: love, a future, family, success. Life has been kind of him, the doors of the whole world are opened to him. But the treachery of those around will turn everything into hell.
Santiago, the son of an outstanding national judge, has just been appointed secretary of the court. He has plans to marry Laura, the woman of his dreams.
Santiago feels a great devotion for law but he also loves fencing, a passion he shares with Marcos Lombardo(Omar Germenos), his close friend. The story begins when Santiago and Marcos travel to Morocco to take part in a fencing tournament. However, this trip will not lead him to victory but to sheer disgrace since he will be involved in a terrible act of treachery, plotted by a wicked environment.
Montecristo: Un Amor, Una Venganza (Monte Cristo: Love and Revenge) is an Argentinetelenovela which premiered April 25, 2006 on Telefe. Loosely based on the 1844 Alexandre Dumas novel, The Count of Monte Cristo, Montecristo is Telefe's most popular novela and was called "the hottest telenovela in Argentina" by Variety in 2007.
Like Dumas' novel, the novela is a tale of revenge, with this version featuring "drug trafficking, kidnapping and military dictatorships." It was directed by Miguel Colom, and stars Pablo Echarri and Paola Krum.
The story begins in 1995 as Santiago Díaz Herrera is hurt while fencing with his best friend Marco Lombardo. Marco wants to bring Santiago back to Buenos Aires but his father, Alberto, commands him to leave Santiago in a Moroccan jail, and Santiago is declared dead. Eleven years pass, and in 2006 Santiago returns to Buenos Aires seeking revenge on the Lombardos for their crimes to himself, his father and other people who have stood in their way over the decades.
