The State I am in and the state I am in. Petzold's analytical precision in depicting Jeanne's maturation is such a good vessel for portraying a country's conjuntural anxieties and contradictions, as usual his attentive eye for detailed, patient exposure is allied to a constant dramatic tension that allows bursts of frontal poignance. We are all alone in the end, we never know what we want nor what we are able to do, everything is always falling apart.

Wow. This could have just been a remake of Running on Empty — and it would have been great — but then the cops run past actual terrorists to arrest immigrants instead and you know it’s a Petzold joint. He just can’t turn his eye away from people in liminal states.
-
Petzolds coming-of-age story in harsh political times of the past, that are shaping your being in this world today.
tentative, monotonous, stark - a tale about loneliness, alienation and disorientation.

A low-key and captivating story about characters trapped in liminal spaces, aided by its grounded and realistic direction, some tense sequences, a subtle score, great acting, and a focus on character that strongly mirrors its thematic elements.

Though never entirely populated by just one or two subjects, Christian Petzold's films retain in his purposely shrunken spaces the sense that they exist in their own slice of a parallel world—one just slightly outside the purview of our densely populated modernity, and yet vividly realized in those fewer spectral figures given the space to move about. Forever deliberate in the scope of these intimate (and intermittently effective) character portraits, Petzold finds in The State I Am In a poignant exploration of stasis on the move.
Where the larger appeal of Petzold's truncated milieu is the looming feeling that every occurrence is happening within no more than a five-block radius—at times a greatly moving translation of the closeness we can…

I am really liking to watch the films that paved the career of Christian Petzold. This film he directed in 2000, drops us straight into the life of a young girl whose life is not very conventional, let's leave it like that. Although her world is complicated and violent, and she must live running from one place to another, she is still fifteen and she still is growing up, falling in lovel, discovering the world and trying to discover who she is. That is happening amidst chaos and to think like that is actually a beautiful thought on my mind.

only petzold can make me feel comfortable in my confusion, because i know eventually everything will reveal itself. maybe my best comparison would be kajillionaire — perhaps a little more clinical, but just as fulfilling in the end.

As if Lumet’s Running on Empty were reimagined almost entirely as a pure mood piece. Hints of a political thriller exist as if in parenthesis, as the old radicals on the run scramble to keep their world from crashing down around them; though Petzold is ultimately most interested in what it actually feels like to be their teenaged daughter Jeanne. Seemingly used to a lifetime spent on the move, suddenly feeling the stirrings of the sorts of feelings that make one want to stay in one place instead. If the film is cagey about exactly what kind of life she might be imagining for herself, it’s only because it’s the yearning itself that’s so gorgeously rendered. “No boy will want…

a coastal town in portugal, a couple lives undercover, fleeing from the crimes of their past. with them there’s their child, a girl who’s grown up in secrecy, isolated from the world though the reasons why were never revealed to her. now it’s been years since those offences were committed, the girl is too old and big to be limited by her surroundings and needs to break free despite not knowing exactly how nor why.
no matter how hard she tries, the ties that bond her to her parents are still too strong and the situation is too critical to take any big risks, she has a role in it too. there’s simply no way out of it. the state i am in is a road film directed at implosion, the story of a family destined to fall apart, mirroring a country’s need to overcome its history of darkness and violence to adjust in a new world.

Christian Petzold - »Die innere Sicherheit (2000)«
Denn: man sollte…
