あっさりとした説明なので少し補完しておきます。ジェイミーは第1話「遭遇」の時点で、キベルネス社に入社して3ヶ月ぐらいの新人社員。アルジェヴォルンの担当になったのも、たまたまという設定です。民間企業に勤務する普通の社員であり、決して天才的な技術者ではありません。もちろん軍人でもありません。

サイトによって異なる英訳　Engineer or Technician

2014年12月現在、『白銀の意思 アルジェヴォルン』の英語版公式サイトは存在しません。そのため海外アニメファン向けの情報はニュースサイトやフォーラム等が中心となっています。今回調べた範囲では、ジェイミーの職種をEngineerと訳しているサイトの方が優勢でした。

She maintains the unit for Tokimune and is the only one who knows how to start it's operating system, and therefore forced to remain with Independent Unit 8 despite her worries about Tokimune getting herself and her robot into deadly situations. She accidentally overheard the truth about the incident of Reika Nanjou and gets worried each time Tokimune enters a berserk state while piloting, but nonetheless supports his decision and helps him in any way she can.

北米最大規模のアニメニュースサイトAnime News Networkはtechnician（テクニシャン）でした。チェックした範囲では唯一このサイトだけです。公式サイトのキャラ紹介をそのまま英語に直訳した文章ですが、何らかの理由があって「技術者」を「technician」にしたのでしょう。

Engineer（エンジニア）とTechnician（テクニシャン）は何が違うのか？ とりあえず“Engineer”を英語の辞書で調べてみると…

一方、“Technician”の方は辞書でどう書かれているのかというと…

どちらも和訳すると『技術者』になっていて、ニュアンスの違いが分かりません。日本ではテクニシャンには別の意味もありますが、それは今回脇に置いておきます（笑）。

ネットで検索してみた

辞書はあてにならないことが判明したので、両者の違いをネットで検索してみました。やはり困った時はGoogle先生に聞くにかぎります。

どうやらEngineer（エンジニア）とTechnician（テクニシャン）の違いは よく検索されているらしく、「engineer te」と途中まで入力したらサジェスト機能が働いて「engineer technician」が第一候補に表示されました。

有用な検索結果はいくつかありましたが、中でも米国ロードアイランド州にある大学（CCRI）の解説（学生向けのガイダンス）が一番しっくりきました。

An Engineer is...the team leader of an engineering team. Engineers plan, design and supervise engineering projects from concept to completion. Definition of a Technician

Technician vs. Engineer
The title of this page may be a little misleading. Generally, technicians and engineers are not in competition unless it is on the ball field. ざっくりまとめると、こんな感じかな。

Engineer（エンジニア） 製品開発のプランニング、設計などを担当し、プロジェクトの構想から完成までを推進する職種。創造性や学術的な知識、高度な問題解決スキルを要求される。学士号が必須のため、学歴は最低でも4年制大学卒。給与はテクニシャンより高い。 Technician（テクニシャン） 現場レベルの技術運用、インプリメント（実装）を担当する職種。現場関係者への技術サポートをやりながら、開発プロジェクトの一員として製品テストやデータ収集、修復なども行う。応用科学（工学）の短大卒で就職できる。

けっきょくジェイミーの職種はどっちなのか

上記CCRIの定義を当てはめると、ジェイミーちゃんの実態に近いのは Technician（テクニシャン）でしょう。独立第八部隊に同行しながら、アルジェヴォルンの運用支援やデータ収集、制御システムのアップデート等を行っていましたから。

そういえば、第16話「凍結」でアルジェヴォルンのマニュアル（搭乗員の身体的・精神的な影響についての付帯項目）を読んだ時、何が書いてあるのかほとんど理解できませんでしたね。実学的な知識はそれなりにありますが、学術的知識の不足は明白です。

今回調査した中ではAnime News Networkだけ Technician ã«ãªã£ã¦ã„ましたけど、英訳を担当した人が技術系の人なのかもしれません。 米国の技術者の間では Engineer ã¨ Technician ã®å·®ã¯æ­´ç„¶ã§ã€ä¸¡è€…の間には超えられない壁が存在するそうです。いやしかし、ジェイミーちゃんの職種の英訳を通して米国の学歴格差を知ることになろうとは！
